Iran announced today (Monday) that it thwarted a series of terrorist attacks, including suicide bombings and explosions. According to the reports, the attacks were set to take place in Tehran and several other cities in the coming days. The Iranian Intelligence Ministry claimed today that it exposed “the biggest terrorist plot of Sunni Muslim militants against the Shi’ite Islamic Republic.”
“In a criminal plot of the anti-Islamic terrorist takfiri [Muslims who accuse others of being infidels] groups, a series of bombings had been planned in several places of the country for the coming days,” claimed the Intelligence Ministry in a statement. The ministry also said that a large amount of bombs and explosive devices was discovered after the terrorists were arrested.
“This is one of the biggest terrorist plots of the Wahhabi organizations,” said the Iranian Intelligence Minister, who also claimed that the organizations received assistance from inside and outside the country.
National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani said that the authorities arrested several suspects in connection to the terrorist attacks. Shamkhani added: “Wherever it may occur in Iran, any suspicious move will be swiftly detected; this is thanks to the presence of the people and capable and experienced organizations.” According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, the organization behind the planned attacks was the anti-Iran Kurdish organization PJAK.
