The Irish Question: What Would Brexit Mean?

It is a small place for the big hitters. The Prime Minister, his two immediate predecessors and the Chancellor have all campaigned in Northern Ireland. The smallest part of the UK is the only part to share a land boundary with another member state of the European Union - the Republic of Ireland. There has been much debate about whether or not the soft Irish border would have to be hardened but the truth is no one knows. It would not be a decision for the UK alone but also for Ireland and the rest of the EU for they share the border. The armoured police checkpoints and customs posts are long gone but Ireland has been exploring the cost of having to re-instate at least some controls. Until now, the Common Travel Area - an informal agreement - between the two countries has al...

Dove’s largest ever body image report proves the media needs to up its game

Women's body confidence has become a "critical issue" around the world and pressure from the media is largely to blame for our low self-esteem, a new report warns. The Dove Global Beauty and Confidence Report, given exclusively to The Huffington Post UK, has been created using interviews with 10,500 women and girls across 13 countries and is the largest the brand has ever commissioned. It found that women in the UK have one of the lowest body confidence scores in the world, with only 20% of us saying we like the way that we look. Globally, more than two-thirds of women (69%) and girls (65%) say increasing pressures from advertising and media to reach an unrealistic standard of beauty is the key force in driving their appearance anxiety. Meanwhile, 56% of all women recogni...

How a street child became a leading artist

Lita Cabellut is one of Spain's most successful artists, but she's barely known in her home country. What's more, the woman whose paintings now sell for six figure sums spent her early years living on the street. "My childhood was like that of thousands of street kids around the world," says Lita Cabellut. She used to roam the streets of Barcelona with other homeless children and slept in the open air. "We looked after one another - we did whatever we liked. We took coins out of the fountains, begged Zippo lighters from sailors and stole tourists' wallets. We used to go into restaurants and say our father was in the toilet when they served us, before wolfing down the food and running off." Cabellut was born in a village in Aragon, north-east Spain, in 1961. While she was a...

Millions across India take part in International Yoga Day

Millions of people across India are twisting themselves into complex yoga positions as the country celebrates International Yoga Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined a crowd of 30,000 schoolchildren and other residents of the northern city of Chandigarh for a mass yoga session Tuesday. Before beginning the exercises, Modi urged people to make yoga a part of their lives, saying the practice — which began in ancient India — doesn't differentiate between the rich and poor, and is accessible to all. Similar yoga events were being held in villages, towns and cities all over India. Last year, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as International Yoga Day. Many believe that practicing yoga is the best way to calm the mind and the best form of exercise for the body.

British teenager arrested in Las Vegas tells police he wanted to kill Donald Trump

A British man has told investigators he wanted to kill Donald Trump after being arrested at a campaign rally for trying to grab an officer's gun. Court papers detail how Michael Sandford, 19, approached a police officer at the event in Las Vegas on Saturday, saying he wanted the Republican candidate's autograph . “Sandford then attempted to seize the sidearm of Officer Jacob by grabbing the holster and handle of the firearm with both hands,” according to court documents, which also said Mr Sandford had earlier visited a gun range in order to learn how to shoot. He appeared in court on Monday to face a charge of “an act of violence on restricted grounds”, and faces more than 10 years in prison and a $250,000 (£170,000) fine if convicted. He was denied bail during a brief he...

Angry Man Who Told Muslim Woman To Speak English Gets Brilliantly Corrected

Tom Bradbury, a 26-year-old events organiser, described how he witnessed the "perfect" moment a niqab-clad woman was defended from a man who confronted her for not speaking English. In a post on Facebook, Bradbury said the Muslim woman was sat playing with her toddler son, speaking to him in another language while on a rail replacement service between Newport and Cwmbran, in south Wales. As she chatted to her child, an aggrieved fellow passenger sat in front of them turned around to challenge her. "When you're in the UK you should really be speaking English," he demanded. The response from another woman passenger would have certainly come as a shock - as she revealed the lady was in fact speaking...Welsh. Bradbury told The Huffington Post UK after his post went viral that ...
