New poll finds huge support for migrants rights

New poll finds huge support for protecting EU migrants’ rights British people overwhelmingly want Theresa May to immediately guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in the UK, an exclusive poll has revealed. The BMG Research study for The Independent reveals two-thirds of people would back a move to guarantee rights now, giving certainty to EU citizens who have no idea if they can still live and work here after Brexit. Such a move would enjoy majority support across every age and social group, and among the supporters of every political party – except those backing Ukip. In total 66 per cent said the Government should guarantee EU citizens’ rights immediately if other EU states were prepared to do the same for British citizens living abroad. So far Ms May has signalling...

Turkey fires another 10,000 civil servants in post-coup purge

Turkish authorities have fired over 10,000 additional civil servants as the government presses a crackdown over the failed July coup, the official gazette said. A total of 10,131 government employees were removed, mainly from the education, justice and health ministries, according to announcements published late Saturday. The government also announced the closure of 15 pro-Kurdish and other media outlets. University rector elections have also been suspended, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan set to pick the winners from a pool of candidates selected by the nation's education authority. The moves came three months after the government declared a state of emergency following a failed bid by a rogue faction of the army to oust Erdogan. More than 35,000 people have been arre...

Mobility Scooter Drivers baffled by pensioner’s 8mph on motorway where chase ever by police

Took a wrong turn somewhere? Drivers were stunned to see a wayward pensioner ripping up the motorway hard shoulder on his mobility scooter last Friday, albeit at the gentle rate of just 8 mph. Police were flooded with calls when awestruck motorists spotted the male rider pootling along the M621 in West Yorkshire at the height of the weekend rush hour. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “An officer was dispatched to the scene and ‘helped and advised’ the man. “The incident happened at about 5.46pm. No one is thought to have been injured in the incident.” The maximum speed limit for mobility scooters and powered wheel chairs is 8mph on British roads, according to government rules. The mobility aids are specifically banned from motorways and cycle lanes. Users are also e...

Disability benefits system to be overhauled in UK

The Government is planning a major overhaul of the way claimants for disability benefits are assessed in a drive to help more people back into work. Work and Pensions Secretary Damian Green will on Monday announce the launch of a consultation on reform of the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) tests, the Press Association reported. The current system has been labelled “cruel” and “callous” by some. Ministers say they want to provide more “targeted and personalised support” for people with disabilities while they look for employment. The move was broadly welcomed by disability charities who said the current system was “fundamentally flawed” but campaigners warned that those who were unable to work must continue to receive the support they needed. Green said the proposed chang...

Bangladesh won the first test victory over England

Bangladesh Sunday recorded their first Test victory over England, taking all ten wickets in a single session thanks to teenage off-spin sensation Mehedi Hasan Miraz to win the second Test by 108 runs and square the series. Celebrations erupted at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla Stadium and across the country as Bangladeshis revelled in one of the proudest moments in their sporting history. Chasing a target of 273, England seemed to be cruising when Alastair Cook and Ben Duckett guided them to 100 without loss at tea. But 19-year-old Mehedi, playing in only his second Test, triggered a dramatic collapse in the final session of the third day. England crumbled to 164 all out to suffer their first-ever defeat by Bangladesh in 10 Tests and share the two-Test series 1-1. Bangladesh secure...

Brexit related attacks in UK: Uproar in Spain over videos

Uproar in Spain over videos of ‘Brexit-related attacks’ in UK Two videos of Spaniards being violently assaulted in separate incidents in the UK have gone viral in Spain, amid speculation the attacks could be linked to Brexit. The first video, from May, shows a British man hitting 27-year-old Tomás Gil, from Valencia, in the face with a wooden plank after shouting at him to “speak English”. It was released this month after the assailant was convicted of assault and bodily harm. The guilty verdict coincided with a second incident, in which a man was filmed punching 31-year-old Bangladeshi, Jubair Ahmed, in the face as he travelled through east London with his Spanish wife Kilian. Ms Ahmed is shown chasing down the attacker, who got off the train at Upton Park, and berating h...
