More than 60 Rohingya feared drowned as US steps up pressure on Myanmar

More than 60 Rohingya Muslim refugees from Myanmar are believed to have drowned when their boat capsized, the latest victims in what the United Nations says is the world's fastest-developing refugee emergency. The refugees drowned in heavy seas off Bangladesh late on Thursday, part of a new surge of people fleeing a Myanmar military campaign that began on Aug. 25 and has triggered an exodus of more than half a million people. International anger with Myanmar over the crisis is growing. In New York, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley called on countries to suspend providing weapons to Myanmar over the violence. It was the first time the United States had called for punishment of Myanmar's military, but she stopped short of threatening to reimpose U.S. sanctio...

Britain must prepare for of US war with North Korea

Tensions between the United States and North Korea are now so high that war is a real possibility that Britain must prepare for, a respected defence think tank has warned. Such a conflict would result in hundreds of thousands of casualties, severely disrupt the global economy, and have profound implications for the political and diplomatic landscape of East Asia, the report for the Royal United Services Institute said. US bombers accompanied by fighter jets flew off the east coast of North Korea on September 23, in a show of force This report is not saying that war is likely. But the probability of war is an uncomfortably real prospect, said Professor Malcolm Chalmers, who authored the report. Tensions between North Korea and the US have escalated over the past year as Pyo...

Woman forcibly removed from Southwest flight

A woman was forcibly removed by police from a Southwest Airlines flight Tuesday after saying she had a life threatening pet allergy with two dogs on board. A fellow passenger, Bill Dumas, recorded the incident, which occurred ahead of a flight from Baltimore to Los Angeles. The woman stated she had a pet allergy but was unable to provide documentation that she could safely fly with the animals on the plane, Southwest said in a statement. There was one emotional support animal and one pet onboard the aircraft, the company said. Our policy states that a customer (without a medical certificate) may be denied boarding if they report a life-threatening allergic reaction and cannot travel safely with an animal onboard.
