The Worst Thing You Can Do In A Job Interview, According To New Data Trying to get a job is a competitive task, and though they can be nerve wracking, it’s very important to give yourself the upper hand by being as impressive as possible in your interview.
Simply Hired have done some new research into what the worst things people can do in an interview is, to give you an idea of what to avoid doing if you’re hoping to land the role.
They spoke to 850 hiring managers, and 93 per cent of those who took part in the survey said that arriving late was the biggest sign that someone wasn’t suitable for a job.
William Vanderbloeman, CEO and founder of his own search group, explained to Moneyishthat being late was a big no-no because, At its root, an [interview] appointment is a contract between you and me.
And if you cannot keep this very first contract we have, especially when you’re trying to impress me, tells me that you’ll likely not be able to deliver on any other contract I entrust you with if you were on my team.
The rest of the data revealed the top 10 worst things that someone can do when trying to land a new job:
- Arriving to an interview late (93 per cent)
- Whining (92 per cent)
- Showing lack of preparation (89 per cent)
- Criticising a former boss (88 per cent)
- Criticising a former company (87 per cent)
- Making grammar of spelling mistakes in a covering letter (86 per cent)
- Using poor grammar in an interview (84 per cent)
- Having unrealistic compensation requirements (84 per cent)
- Being under-qualified (80 per cent)
- Answering questions incorrectly (77 per cent)
While some of these are a given (being under-qualified and showing lack of preparation), it’s interesting that 88% of hiring managers think criticising the company you’re hoping to leave and your former boss is a deal breaker.
