A serial ghoster in dating: why do it

Dating in your mid-30s isn’t easy. Many of your friends are either married or in serious relationships, and work or raising children has pushed them into the suburbs. It was hard enough meeting the friends I have, nevermind making new ones. When my last serious relationship ended, I was slow to explore online dating. It took me a while to realize how sedentary my life had become, and that dating apps seem to be necessary to meet new people these days (and sometimes just to leave the house). I signed up and started swiping. This wasn’t the kind of dating that I was used to pre-apps. Within the confines of a common social group, dating, no matter how casual, always required a certain decorum. If you didn’t want “keep seeing” someone, you had to say so, because you we...

Michel Barnier rejects Theresa May’s latest EU Brexit plan

The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator has rejected Theresa May’s latest proposal to solve the Irish border problem, arguing that aspects of it are not feasible. Speaking in Brussels on Friday Michel Barnier also said Europe would not be intimidated by Brexiteers’ blame game for the downsides of leaving the EU. The British government on Thursday unveiled a white paper spelling out its plan for a so-called backstop to prevent a hard border in Ireland after Britain leaves the bloc. The UK rejected an earlier Brussels plan to keep Northern Ireland aligned with EU regulations and customs procedures, which would introduce customs checks on ferries across the Irish sea. The UK’s plan tries to get around introducing checks by keeping the whole UK aligned with those rules, and ...

New bug leaked Facebook private posts publicly

Facebook said Thursday that it would notify 14 million users that posts they intended to share privately may have been published publicly, the company’s latest setback as it tries to rebuild user trust after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The issue arose from a bug affecting Facebook’s audience selector tool, which allows users to decide whether to publish a post only to their friends or to a broader audience. The tool usually remains on the setting that was used most recently so that a user who only wants to share posts with friends does not have to keep selecting that option. But while the bug was active, from 18 May to 27 May, the setting was automatically changed to public. We have fixed this issue and starting today we are letting everyone affected know and ...

Boris Brexit warn leaked: May must show more guts on Brexit

Boris Johnson has warned that Britain could end up locked in orbit around the EU in his most critical comments to date of the Prime Minister’s handling of Brexit. The Foreign Secretary told Tory donors that the UK could end up effectively in the customs union and to a large extent still in the single market unless the Government had the guts to pursue the right policies. He even joked that if Donald Trump was in charge of Brexit actually you might get somewhere. He said it was beyond belief that the Northern Ireland border issue had been allowed to dictate policy, describing it as allowing the tail to wag the dog. He also described Philip Hammond’s Treasury as basically the heart of Remain. Mr Johnson made the comments at a private dinner with Tory donors which w...
