Jews warned against wearing skullcap in Germany

Jews in Germany have been warned to avoid wearing traditional skullcaps in public in certain parts of the country, amid concerns over a rise in anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism commissioner Felix Klein reportedly said he could not recommend to Jews that they wear the traditional kippah in some areas. According to the BBC, Mr Klein told the Funke newspaper group: I cannot recommend to Jews that they wear the skullcap at all times everywhere in Germany. His comments come amid concerns over a rise in anti-Semitism in Germany, with official figures showing hate crimes against Jews had increased by 10% in 2018 compared to the previous year. In his interview, Mr Klein suggested that the internet and social media could be contributing to a rise in anti-Semitism. He called f...

No one tells you about divorce

A few months after my ex-husband and I decided to separate, I heard a lot of things from people who had been through a divorce: You have a tough road ahead. Once your turn a corner, it is amazing. Dropping off your kids is the worst. Having sex with other people is so much fun. Fast forward a few years later, and I've discovered there are a lot of things people don't actually tell you. Perhaps it's because divorce lingers like a bad aftertaste they can't shake, and they go through so many stages and feelings that it would be impossible to express that to another person. Or maybe the people I was talking to were so far removed from their divorce that they'd already forgotten that while sex with another person can be new and exhilarating, you aren't really able to...

Petition for GP in Muslim veil issue

A petition to prevent the sacking of a doctor who asked a Muslim patient to remove her veil in order to hear the details of her daughter's medical condition has reached over 59,000 signatures. Dr Keith Wolverson admitted he was rather fearful of the consequences after finding out he had been reported to the General Medical Council (GMC) and would be the subject of a racial discrimination inquiry. But despite being upset at the inquiry, Mr Wolverson said he was absolutely bowled over by the petition. He said there was no sign the patient was upset during the consultation at the Royal Stoke University Hospital last June. The freelance GP, who has been practising for 23 years, told the Press Association that because of the support, he would continue to "fight to the ...

Backlash against Johnson No 10 bid

Boris Johnson’s march towards No 10 has hit trouble as senior Tories back away from his leadership bid because of his willingness to embrace a crash-out Brexit. The overwhelming favourite to succeed Theresa May suffered a backlash when pro-EU Tories, led by Rory Stewart, questioned his fitness for the job if he threatened a no-deal departure this autumn. Amber Rudd, the work and pensions secretary, who has hinted she could back Mr Johnson, refused three times to describe him as an honest politician. I would be very concerned about somebody who is too enthusiastic about no deal, she warned, while ruling herself out of the race. The charge was led by Mr Stewart, a rival for the top job, who dramatically ruled out serving under Mr Johnson because he wasn’t ready to c...
