UK death toll rises to 177

Boris Johnson has called on the UK public to be considerate when they shop amid more scenes of stockpiling and panic buying in supermarkets around the country.

The plea came as Health Secretary Matt Hancock urged the UK to stay home to save lives, warning that Covid-19 will keep spreading as long as people continue to socialise. Meanwhile, schools across the UK are set to shut their doors today.

The wide-sweeping closures will affect the majority of schools, although staff are being asked to provide care for vulnerable children and those whose parents are key workers.

Later today, Chancellor Rishi Sunak is today set to unveil an emergency package aimed at protecting workers’ jobs and wages as they face hardship in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
