UK in talks with Taliban to ensure Brits get safe passage out of Afghanistan

The UK is in talks with the Taliban to ensure Britons can safely leave Afghanistan, the government has said. Its special representative for Afghan transition, Sir Simon Gass, has met senior members of the hardline Islamist group in Doha, Qatar. They also discussed safe passage for Afghans who have worked with the UK over the last 20 years. The newly appointed Afghan resettlement minister, Victoria Atkins, told Sky News the UK would look to ensure the Taliban abide by the terms of a recent UN Security Council resolution. This includes allowing safe passage for those attempting to cross Afghanistan's borders as they seek sanctuary elsewhere, with the Foreign Office in "intense discussions" with other countries in the region over how to process those fleeing Afghanistan. The international...

Third jabs aren’t luxury boosters

Third coronavirus vaccines are not luxury boosters making vaccine inequity worse but a means of keeping the vulnerable safe, WHO's Europe director has said. Hans Kluge appeared to contradict his World Health Organisation (WHO) colleagues at a news briefing on Monday, saying third COVID-19 jabs are an important way of protecting the most clinically vulnerable. The UK government says it will start rolling out third vaccines to the most clinically vulnerable from September. So far, 42.6 million people have received both doses. Earlier this month, WHO senior officials criticised countries such as the US and Israel for rolling out a booster vaccine programme, when many people across the world have had no jabs at all. But Mr Kluge said: A third dose of vaccine is not a luxury booster [that ...

Johnson and Biden hold Afghanistan evacuation talks ahead of G7 meeting

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has agreed on evacuation efforts in Afghanistan with President Biden. They spoke ahead of an emergency G7 leaders meeting to discuss the crisis unfolding in Afghanistan. It comes after the Taliban’s warning to Mr Johnson and Mr Biden. The two leaders made an agreement to continue to work together to ensure people could leave Afghanistan, Downing Street said. This includes after August 31 when the initial phase of the evacuation is due to end in line with America’s planned withdrawal. The meeting underscored the importance of close coordination with allies and partners in managing the current situation and forging a common approach to Afghanistan policy. A spokesperson said in No 10’s readout: The leaders agreed to continue working together to ensure those ...

Covid has had the number one spot for cause of death in England and Wales for six months since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. It does not include those who have Covid mentioned on the death certificate as a contributory cause. On Monday, the Government has said a further 40 people had died within 28 days of ...

UK troops start leaving Afghanistan as evacuation effort enters ‘final hours’

The UK's evacuation mission at Kabul's airport has "a matter of hours" left and no more people will be called forward, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has said. Mr Wallace told Sky News the effort was into its "final hours" after the closure of the main processing centre in Kabul at the Baron Hotel near the airport. He said: We, at 4.30 this morning, UK-time, closed the Baron Hotel, shut the processing centre and the gates were closed at Abbey Gate. We will process the people that we've brought with us, the 1,000 people approximately in the airfield now and we will seek a way to continue to find a few people in the crowds where we can, but overall the main processing is now closed and we have a matter of hours. The sad fact is not every single one will get out. The threat is obviously go...

Vaccine booster scheme will start in September, Sajid Javid

Health secretary Sajid Javid said he is confident a Covid-19 jab booster campaign can start next month, despite a report that experts want more time to consider whether they are needed. NHS plans are in place to roll out third doses of the vaccine from 6 September for people who might really need another jab but no official decision has been taken yet. We are going to have a booster scheme, it will start sometime in September, Mr Javid told reporters on a visit to open a hospital in Carlisle on Thursday. The health secretary said: I couldn’t tell you exactly when because before we start it, as people would expect, we need to get the final advice from our group of experts, our independent scientific and medical advisers, the JCVI. He added: We’re waiting for their final opinion and, lo...

Pension triple lock to be watered down by Government

The pension 'triple lock' guarantee long championed by the Conservative Government is set to be watered down next year in a move that will save the Treasury billions of pounds. The Telegraph can reveal that Boris Johnson has been advised by Cabinet ministers to temporarily alter the long-held promise on how to increase state pensions, due to a freak earnings rise. The triple lock, which has been Tory policy for a decade, promises to raise the state pension by either the inflation rate, average earnings or 2.5 per cent, whichever is higher. However, figures released on Tuesday by the Office of National Statistics found that average earnings rose by 7.4 per cent in the three months to June due to the peculiarities of the Covid pandemic. There is a growing consensus among government min...
