Sadiq Khan became second term London mayor

Labour's Sadiq Khan has won a second term as London's mayor, beating Conservative rival Shaun Bailey. He won 55.2% of the popular vote, after entering a run-off with Mr Bailey when neither managed to secure a majority in the first round of voting. The former MP became the first Muslim mayor of an EU capital city when he was first elected to the role in 2016. Mr Khan's closest rival was Mr Bailey, who received 44.8% of the first and second-round votes. Mr Bailey increased the Conservative vote share by 1.6%. He said he had been written off by pollsters, journalists and other politicians, adding: But Londoners didn't write me off. The Green Party's Sian Berry came third, while the Liberal Democrats' Luisa Porritt was fourth. The Lib Dems lost their deposit, as Ms Porritt failed to win ...

Attacks on worshipers outside the Ilford Mosque in east London with eggs and stones

Worshippers were pelted with eggs outside an east London mosque in a truly appalling attack, police said. The attack comes as worshippers mark Ramadan. Police are investigating the incident, the Met said. Five people were hit with eggs outside the Ilford Islamic Centre in Albert Road, Ilford, around 23:00 BST on Tuesday. MP for Ilford South Sam Tarry tweeted he was shocked and saddened by the Islamophobic attack. Ilford Islamic Centre director and secretary Ahmad Nawaz said nobody was injured in the unnerving attack on the worshippers who were leaving prayers at the mosque. He said: It came as a bit of a surprise. We didn't expect this during Covid. We take it on the chin. We are always fearful of something like this. This sentiment exists. He added: I'm very mindful of the potential...

Poplar tower block fire leaves two men in hospital

A fire that badly damaged the middle floors of a 19-storey London tower block has left two men in hospital. Four children and 38 adults were evacuated from the building in Poplar, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said. More than 120 firefighters spent about three hours tackling the blaze at the New Providence Wharf estate. About 20% of the façade of the affected section, Block D, features ACM PE cladding panels - found to be a key factor in the Grenfell Tower fire. In a statement, LFB said that parts of the eighth, ninth and 10th floors of the east London tower block caught fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have carried out multiple rescues. Two men have been taken to hospital suffering [from the effects of] smoke inhalation. A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said they were...

Mayra Zulfiqar told police about death threat before she murdered in Pakistan

Murdered Londoner Mayra Zulfiqar had reportedly warned police her life was in danger less than two weeks before she was shot in Lahore. The 24-year-old law graduate was found in a pool of blood in her rented flat in the Pakistani city on Monday. Four men including the two chief suspects were believed to have broken in that morning. Police said Ms Zulfiquar had two bullet wounds - one to her neck and another to her arm and had bled to death. Bruises were found on her right hand and left foot. Thirteen days earlier, she had reportedly asked police for protection after accusing a man of abducting her at gunpoint. Royal Navy to stay on patrol in Jersey, says PM as fishing row escalates

A fleet of French fishing boats descended on Jersey after threatening to blockade the island's main port over a post-Brexit fishing rights row. The UK has sent two Royal Navy ships to Jersey as a precaution HMS Severn and HMS Tamar are patrolling the waters around Jersey. And French authorities have confirmed to Sky News that a vessel, the Military Ops ship Athos, will be arriving imminently to carry out a patrol mission while local reports suggest another is also en route. The deployment, France says, is to guarantee the safety of people at sea and accompany the flotilla of around 50 French fishing vessels that had been protesting off St Helier over a lack of access to waters around the Channel island. Downing Street confirmed Boris Johnson spoke to the chief minister of Jersey, Sen...

The Telegraph reported on Friday that the government was planning to introduce a traffic light system to allow Britons to go abroad on holiday, with a “tiny handful” of countries expected to be on the green list with the lowest level of restrictions. UK Covid-19 vaccinations: Latest figures All people, including those who have been vaccinated, will have to take a PCR coronavirus test when they return to the UK, according to the newspaper. Book Review: Gallantry Award Recipient Freedom Fighters of Sylhet by Anwar Shahjahan

History is the story of human choices that connect the past to the present and influence the future. It goes without saying “Gallantry Award Recipient Freedom Fighters of Sylhet” speaks volumes about the embodiment of the brightest times in the history of Bangladesh. The history of the war of liberation remains deeply rooted in the brave hearts that once made their heroic effort in combating the outside force and fighting all odds to achieve independence in the year 1971. With passing time, we need to remind ourselves of their sacrifices, actions, and thoughts. Anwar Shahjahan, the Sylhet-born writer, and journalist has precisely been working towards that for the people of Bangladesh and beyond. The liberation war of Bangladesh is unarguably one of the significant revolution and armed dis...

Half a million people not claiming who eligible for universal credit

Half a million people who were eligible for universal credit at the start of the pandemic did not claim it despite often experiencing sharp falls in income, new research shows. A report led by the University of Salford and funded by the Health Foundation finds hundreds of thousands of people were not aware they could claim the support, while others had chosen not to claim due to the perceived hassle of applying or the stigma around claiming benefits. Ministers are now being urged to introduce a strategy to ensure people can claim the right benefits more quickly, correct misperceptions about the benefits system and attempt to address “benefits stigma”. The number of people claiming universal credit in the UK has doubled since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, with more than 6 million...

Scientists urged to expedite Indian variant analysis amid travel ban calls

British scientists must urgently learn as much as possible about the Indian Covid-19 variant, a leading epidemiologist has warned, as calls mount for the country to be added to the Government’s “red list”. Mike Tildesley, a member of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (Spi-M), which provides evidence on coronavirus to the Government’s Sage committee, said as much information about the new variant must be gathered “as quickly as possible”. But while confirming that there are “around 70 cases” of the new Indian variant in the UK, George Eustice defended the Government’s decision not to further restrict travel to the country. He added that the situation is being kept “under regular review”. Amid growing fears that the new strain could delay the Government’s lockdown eas...

Face coverings and social distancing will be suspended during a government trial

Face coverings and social distancing will be suspended at a handful of venues during a government trial of the safe reopening of large events. The Events Research Programme (ERP) co-chaired by theatre director Sir Nicholas Hytner and co-founder of The Carphone Warehouse David Ross will test a range of safety measures in its first scheduled 10 to 15 events in the next few weeks, including the FA Cup Final on 15 May. Its aim is to establish which methods work best to minimise the risk of Covid-19 transmission in larger crowds, paving the way for large events to resume later in the year. The findings will inform ministers’ decisions over ending social distancing on 21 June, when Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown reaches its final stage. Face coverings and social distancing will be...
