Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, Tesco and Lidl limit sales of fruit and vegetables

Extreme weather in Spain and north Africa has affected fruit and vegetable stock levels at UK supermarkets like Asda and Morrisons. Asda and Morrisons are just some of the major UK supermarkets putting a limit on the amount of fruit and vegetables  customers can purchase in stores. The decision comes at a time when supermarkets are facing a shortage of the amount of fresh produce imported to the UK. Spain and north Africa are currently experiencing extreme weather such as hail, snow and floods. These conditions are affecting their harvests and as a result has had an impact on stock levels in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The limit at Asda will see a restriction meaning  customers can only purchase certain products in a maximum quantity of three each. Below is the full...

ISIS bride Shamima loses her most recent appeal over her British citizenship

Shamima Begum remains de facto stateless after losing her most recent appeal over her British citizenship after it was revoked in 2019. It is clear that, had the Home Secretary made inquiries as to the practical effect of depriving the appellant of her citizenship, he would likely have understood that the appellant could be left without the protection of any state, in the dire conditions of the Roj camp, Begum's lawyers argued in November. He would have been aware that the deprivation decision was likely to render the appellant de facto stateless. Begum has been held in the Roj camp for internationally displaced persons in northern Syria since 2019. Her youngest child, Jarrah, was born in the camp and died three weeks later from pneumonia, records show. Arriving at the camp while she...

Thousands greet King Charles and Queen Consort on historic visit to Brick Lane

The King and Queen Consort were welcomed by thousands of people from the British Bangladeshi community, as well as those who were involved in the anti-racism movement of the 1970s, on a historic visit to Brick Lane. Charles and Camilla shook hands and chatted to well-wishers on a walkabout of Bangla Town in celebration of the contribution of Bangladeshis to the life of the nation. King Charles was dubbed an inclusive and supportive monarch by a stalwart of London’s Bangladeshi community after the visit. Charles and his wife planted an elm tree in a nearby park in memory of Altab Ali, a young man fatally stabbed in a racist attack in 1978, who had the open space renamed in his honour. Ayesha Qureshi and Abdal Ullah, a married couple who co-founded the British Bangladeshi Power & I...

Russia stunned by Macron’s latest Ukraine comments

Russia has attacked absurd comments from Emmanuel Macron after he refused to rule out delivering fighter jets to Ukraine, while also warning against the risk of escalation. Maria Zakharova, the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman, said: Forgive me, but this is absurd. Is the president of France really certain that if arms, heavy weapons and aircraft are supplied to the Kyiv regime to conduct combat operations, this will not lead to an escalation of the situation? Referring to Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, Ms Zakharova added: Such statements only increase the already irrepressible appetite of the Zelensky regime. In a visit to the Netherlands on Monday, Mr Macron said that he would not rule out the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine, telling Mark Rutte, the Dutch prim...

EU citizens wrongly received benefits after Brexit

Tens of thousands of EU citizens whose applications to stay in Britain were rejected may have been wrongly paid benefits, it has emerged. A data error meant European nationals who were turned down for settled status after Brexit continued to receive payouts to which they weren’t entitled. The Home Office, which was responsible for the mix-up, has said it will contact those affected following reports the Government will look to recoup the cash. It is feared many of the almost 150,000 EU citizens who were refused the permanent right to remain in the UK may have continued to get the cash. European nationals who were eligible for benefits before Brexit had to successfully apply for settled status to keep their payments. Between June 2021 and April last year the Home Office did not updat...

Tenant with incurable disease to sue London council over mould

A tenant with an incurable lung condition he says was caused by mould in his flat has called for greater punishments for councils and landlords that fail to act on “inhumane” living conditions. In 2021, Max, 38, was diagnosed with sarcoidosis an autoimmune condition triggered by exposure to certain irritants such as chemicals or fungus four years after he had moved into a flat riddled with leaks, damp and black mould that was offered to him by Hackney council. The chronic disease has since spread to his heart, and is suspected to have affected his nervous system, greatly increasing the risk of the condition becoming terminal. His symptoms include coughing blood, dry eyes and problems salivating. Three doctors on separate occasions produced letters stating that there were medical dange...

Andrew and Giuffre photo is fake

Disgraced British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell has said the well-known photo showing the Duke of York next to Virginia Giuffre is fake. Maxwell, 61, who was convicted of sex trafficking, has previously cast doubt on the authenticity of the photo, said to be taken inside her Mayfair home, showing Andrew with his arm around Ms Giuffre, and Maxwell in the background. Speaking from prison in the US, Maxwell said she is sure the picture is not real. In an interview with TalkTV, due to be aired on Monday evening, Maxwell said: It’s a fake. I don’t believe it’s real for a second, in fact I’m sure it’s not. She added: Well, there’s never been an original and further there’s no photograph, and I’ve only ever seen a photocopy of it. Andrew has also questioned the validity of the image of him with...

Prince Harry’s Netflix gamble appears to backfire

Almost half of the public think the Duke of Sussex should be stripped of his royal title following the release of his and his wife's Netflix documentary, a poll has found. In a survey by YouGov, 44 per cent of respondents said Prince Harry should have his title removed, compared with 32 per cent who thought he should be allowed to retain it. In an indication that the six-part Netflix series, Harry & Meghan, has backfired on the couple with its accusations against the rest of the Royal family, the public appears to have more sympathy for the Prince and Princess of Wales. A total of 44 per cent in the YouGov poll for The Times said they were more sympathetic towards William and Catherine, compared with just 17 per cent for Prince Harry and Meghan. At the same time, 23 per cent said...

Boris Johnson voted most competent PM of 2022

Boris Johnson is regarded as the most competent of 2022’s three prime ministers, a new poll has found. In a year which saw three Conservative party leaders, the largest share of British adults came out for Mr Johnson, according to a survey by People Polling. A total of 32 per cent of respondents said they thought Mr Johnson had been the most competent, followed by 29 per cent for Rishi Sunak. Just three per cent said Liz Truss, who lasted just 45 days in Downing Street before standing down following a disastrous mini-Budget, which saw the pound crash and the Bank of England forced into an emergency intervention to calm market turmoil. The same question was asked to those who voted for the Conservative Party in the 2019 election. Among Tory voters, 62 per cent said Mr Johnson was the ...
