The rate of new deaths, which are from 5pm on Saturday to 5pm on Sunday, is slightly lower than the daily death tolls at the end of last week. UK may not get ventilators in time

The Health Secretary has said the Government is on track to meet its goal of ventilator capacity for 18,000 patients, however he admitted that may not be in place before the expected peak of the virus. Matt Hancock said the virus is expected to peak within a week to 10 days but said the ventilator capacity will likely be below 18,000 by then. He defended the Government’s handling of the outbreak and said the Army is now helping to get personal protective equipment (PPE) to the NHS front line. He also said now is not the time to be discussing a pay rise for nurses, but said he was sympathetic to calls for them to be paid more. Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, Matt Hancock said: We need to make sure we have more ventilators than there are people who need vent...

Baby twins named Covid and Corona

A couple in India have named their twins born amid the global coronavirus pandemic Corona and Covid. The siblings a girl and a boy were born to Preeti and Vinay Verma in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh on 27 March during the ongoing nationwide lockdown, according to NDTV. The delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore, my husband and I wanted to make the day memorable, the twins 27-year-old mother told news agency Press Trust of India. She said the coronavirus was dangerous and life-threatening, but the COVID-19 outbreak had also made people focus on sanitation, hygiene and instil other good habits. When the hospital staff also started calling the babies Corona and Covid, we finally decided to name them after the pandemic, she added. The t...

The UK's coronavirus death toll has surged again, surging by 563 in the past 24 hours to a total of 2,352. Today's figures include people who died in hospitals, but not those who passed away in their homes without being officially diagnosed with Covid-19. The figures are correct as of 9am today. The UK total yesterday was 1,789, according to the Department of Health. At lunchtime today First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that the Scottish death toll had increased by 16 to a total of 76 in the last 24 hours. She added that the country’s confirmed Covid-19 cases has now reached 2,310 - up 317. The death total in Wales is now 98 with an increase of 29 in the last 24 hours. UK’s corona virus hotspots revealed

Sheffield, Birmingham and Slough are three of the UK's coronavirus hotspots, with more cases per population than everywhere except London. The capital has the highest COVID-19 infection rate - 64 cases per 100,000 people, followed by Sheffield (52). Birmingham is third with 50. And Slough, a town in Berkshire just 20 miles west of London, has 49 cases for every 100,000 people. The true size of the UK's coronavirus outbreak remains a mystery because of the controversial policy to only test patients in hospital. Only 22,000 cases have been officially diagnosed - but scientists have suggested the true toll could be in the millions. Figures from Public Health England (PHE) can be broken down into local authorities to show which have the most cases of coronavirus. Lo...

Airports will fail in weeks

Airports will collapse within weeks without emergency funding for the firms that supply baggage handlers and refuel planes, the Government has been warned. Ground handling firms, which supply 25,000 staff in the UK to manage the most vital airport operations, last week told Transport Minister Kelly Tolhurst they are perilously close to collapse and are likely to run out of cash within six weeks. The UK's four biggest such companies Swissport, Menzies Aviation, WFS and Dnata are understood to have already laid off thousands of staff after suffering a 95 per cent drop in revenues due to 11 partial or full airport closures including Gatwick, Manchester, London City and Teesside International. Sources said unless the Treasury steps in with a rescue package the firms wi...

UK Lockdown may last until June

Boris Johnson has warned the coronavirus crisis in the UK "will get worse" before it improves in a letter sent to households across the country. The PM also stresses the need to continue to stay indoors to support the NHS in the letter, which will land on £30million doorsteps. It comes as Professor Neil Ferguson, director of the Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis at Imperial College, told the Sunday Times total lockdown could last until June. The death toll in the UK passed 1,000 on Saturday, while more than 600,000 cases have been confirmed across the world.
