Job Loss Threat To Siemens Workers In UK

Job losses are threatened among the 14,000 British employees of the German engineering giant Siemens. The manufacturer of heavy industrial equipment has confirmed it is to slash a further 4,500 jobs worldwide as part of a cost-cutting drive. Around 2,200 of the jobs are expected to go in Germany, but the firm said it was unable to give a breakdown of where the other redundancies will be made. "We cannot disclose any details," a spokesman said, adding staff and their representatives would be informed first. Siemens employs around 343,000 people in 200 countries, including the UK. The job losses are on top of the 7,800 redundancies announced by Siemens in February. Sexual assault: Cops thrash protesters

Police today used brute force to drive away demonstrators trying to besiege Dhaka police headquarters over the sexual assault at Dhaka University on April 14. At least 12 people, including Bangladesh Chhatra Union chief Hassan Tarek, were injured as cops charged batons, rifle butts, water cannon and teargas canisters. Over a hundred students hit the streets this morning from Dhaka University campus under banner Palta Aghat and marched towards DMP office. They were chanting slogans in favour for their six-point demand including immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits responsible. Unrest followed after cops stopped them near DMP office and the demonstrators sat down on the street, on Captain Monsur Road, demanding to see the police commissioner.

North Korea Tests World-Level Strategic Weapon

North Korea has claimed it has successfully test-fired a submarine-based ballistic missile "developed on the personal initiative" of leader Kim Jong-Un. Kim, who personally oversaw the test, hailed the missile as a "world-level strategic weapon capable of striking and wiping out in any waters the hostile forces infringing upon (North Korea's) sovereignty and dignity", said the country's KCNA news agency. There was no immediate independent confirmation of the test, which would mark a major breakthrough for the country's missile programme and violate UN resolutions prohibiting Pyongyang from conducting ballistic missile tests. Development of a submarine-launched missile capability would take the North Korean nuclear threat to a new level, allowing deployment far beyond the ...

General Election 2015: Miliband accuses Cameron of ‘constitutional outrage’ if he tries to ‘squat’ in Number 10 without majority

Ed Miliband’s allies are worried that Mr Cameron will attempt to hang on as prime minister if the Conservatives win more seats than Labour but Labour would have more chance of seeing the Queen’s Speech approved by MPs with the backing of the Scottish National Party and other parties. The new government’s programme will  be unveiled on May 27, with a vote due on June 4. Tory insiders suggest  Mr Cameron would stay on in the hope that the public would regard the party with the most seats as the winner, while seeing a deal put together by the runner-up as a “coalition of the losers.” But Labour argues that such a move would breach the rulebook, the Cabinet Manual, which says a prime minister should resign if it is clear he is unlikely to command the confidence of the Commons....

Kensington Palace tweeted the couple were "delighted" to announce the baby will be known as: "Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge." Bookmakers had said the favourite was 'Alice' after a flurry of last minute bets, knocking 'Charlotte' off the top spot. Ladbrokes said that since the baby was born punters had placed more bets on the potential name than on the General Election. Sky's Royal Commentator Alastair Bruce said: "It’s a name that has tremendous history. "It will always provide a link to the past and opportunity for this young princess to create her own ...
