Biman pilot among 4 held over aircraft sabotage plan

    Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested four alleged members of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), including a pilot of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, who had been planning acts of sabotage on an aircraft. The arrested pilot is Sabbir Ahmed, a first officer of the national flag carrier and son of Habibullah Bahar Azad. He was arrested after a drive at a militant den at Mirpur Mazar Road on September 7 last. Azad is the owner of the six-storey building where the militant hideout was busted. RAB Director (Media) Mufti Mahmud Khan said they arrested the four alleged militants in an overnight drive beginning on Monday in Mirpur area. Khaleda Zia distributed relief to Rohingya camp: Urges Myanmar to return Rohingya people

    BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday distributed relief goods among the Rohingya refugees during her visit at Rohingya camps in Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar. The BNP chief reached Moinar Ghona area of Palongkhali union at Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar at about 11:45am.The refugees waited for the relief goods on a queue before Khaleda Zia reached there. BNP relief committee head Mirza Abbas handed over around 45 trucks carrying 100 metric tons of relief goods to Army. Khaleda Zia officially opened the relief distribution programme. Suu Kyi accepts home minister’s invitation to visit Bangladesh

    State Counsellor and Myanmar Union Minister for Foreign Affairs Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday said her government started work on repatriation of Rohingyas who are living in Bangladesh. She also said the Myanmar government has started work to implement the recommendations made by the Kofi Annan Commission to bring solution to the Rohingya crisis. Suu Kyi conveyed it to Home Minister Asaduzzaman during a meeting held at her office in Myanmar’s capital city. The Home Minister invited Suu Kyi to visit Bangladesh. Biman’s domestic flight landed safely after technical glitch

    A domestic flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, which faced problem in a wheel after taking off from Syedpur Airport, landed safely at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday morning. Biman's general manager (PR) Shakil Meraj said Dash-8, a plane of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, took off from Syedpur Airport at 9:33am with some 66 passengers, including women and children, on board. Just after the take-off, wheel No. 4 of the back side of the aircraft got damaged, Shakil added. More Chinese relief for Rohingyas arrives

    The second consignment of China’s relief for the Rohingya refugees, who have fled to Bangladesh amid persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State since August 25, arrived in Chittagong on Thursday. A cargo flight of China with 53.50 tonnes of relief materials, including 2,000 pieces of tents and 3,000 pieces of blankets, arrived at Shah Amanat International Airport in the morning. Mohammad Zillur Rahman Chowdhury, deputy commissioner of Chittagong, received the relief items from Chinese Embassy Economic and Commercial Counsellor Li Guangjun at around 9:30am. Bangladesh moves up seven places in Global Competitiveness Index

    Bangladesh’s ranking in the World Economic Forum’s latest Global Competitiveness Index has moved up by seven places to 99 out of 137 countries surveyed. The reports says: ‘Competitiveness has improved across most countries in South Asia (as seen in Figure 4a and 4b), in particular in the two Himalayan countries of Bhutan (82nd, up 15) and Nepal (88th, up 10). On a similarly positive trend, Pakistan (115th, up seven) and Bangladesh (99th, up seven) have both improved their scores across all pillars of competitiveness.
