Justin Trudeau takes a shot at Donald Trump over climate change policies

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a clear jab at US President Donald Trump's move to quit a major climate change pact, said on Monday the world needed the courage to confront hard truths on global warming. Trudeau's remarks were the first he has made in public since Trump announced on Thursday that the United States would withdraw from the Paris accord. Trudeau issued a statement at the time saying he was deeply disappointed. The future is still bright for those who have the courage to confront hard truths, and the confidence to stay the course, he said in public remarks after briefly paddling along the Niagara River to mark World Environment Day. After the event, he tweeted Canada is all in. This morning, we paddled to celebrate #WorldEnvironmentDay and o...

I’ll rip up human rights laws that impede new terror legislation: Theresa May

Theresa May has declared she is prepared to rip up human rights laws to impose new restrictions on terror suspects, as she sought to gain control over the security agenda just 36 hours before the polls open. The prime minister said she was looking at how to make it easier to deport foreign terror suspects and how to increase controls on extremists where it is thought they present a threat but there is not enough evidence to prosecute them. The last-ditch intervention comes after days of pressure on May over the policing cuts and questions over intelligence failures, following terror attacks on London Bridge, Manchester and Westminster. She said: But I can tell you a few of the things I mean by that: I mean longer prison sentences for people convicted of terrorist offences....

Theresa May urged not to suppress report into funding of jihadi groups

Jeremy Corbyn and Tim Farron have challenged Theresa May over a long-delayed inquiry into foreign funding and support of jihadi groups in the UK, after the Home Office suggested the investigation may not be published. The inquiry into revenue streams for extremist groups was commissioned by David Cameron when he was prime minister and is thought to focus on Saudi Arabia. But the Guardian revealed last week that the report was still incomplete and its contents may not be published. The Labour leader used a speech in Carlisle on Sunday evening to challenge the prime minister over the delayed report. Corbyn referenced May’s speech after the London Bridge attack on Saturday, in which she said challenging terrorism would require some difficult and often embarrassing conversatio...

Anti-terror power has been used on just one jihadist in two years

Prime Minister Theresa May squirmed in a TV interview as she was forced to admit a key anti-terror power has been used on just one suspected jihadist in two years. Mrs May was being questioned by ITV's Julie Etchingham about temporary exclusion orders (TEO). They were introduced in 2015 when she was Home Secretary to intercept British jihadists attempting to return to the UK after fighting in Syria. But Home Secretary Amber Rudd confirmed last week just one of the 350 suspected UK jihadists who has returned from Syria have been slapped with a TEO. It comes at a time of major scrutiny of Britain's anti-terror measures in the wake of the Westminster attack, the Manchester Arena bombing and the London Bridge killings in the space of two months. In the humiliating interview to...

British police name third London Bridge attacker as Youssef Zaghba

British police named the third of the jihadis who killed seven people in a knife and van attack in London as Youssef Zaghba, 22, believed to be an Italian national of Moroccan descent. The fallout from the attack eclipsed all other subjects in the political campaign ahead of Thursday’s general election, with both the ruling Conservatives and opposition Labour Party battling to defend their records on security. Police said Zaghba had not been a subject of interest for them or for the MI5 domestic intelligence agency. Earlier, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera had reported that Zaghba had been stopped at an Italian airport because authorities believed he was on his way to Syria, and that Italian officials had warned British counterparts about him. In Britain’s third Isla...
