Melania just added another $100,000 to Donald Trump’s massive travel tab

Are you, an American citizen, worried about what your hard-earned tax dollars are actually paying for? Are you, a concerned global citizen, worried about the state of American politics? ...Is Trump at Mar-a-Lago? Possibly, most definitely and YES. Helpfully, a new genius website, istrumpatmaralago.org, has been founded allowing you to keep track of President Trump's regular Florida trips. The site also indicates an estimate on how much money has been spent on trips so far - $25 million - and how that money could have been better spent (e.g. public school funding, Medicaid), while he proposes dramatic budget cuts to higher education and homelessness aid. Also, you can find out just how many weekends of the presidency Trump has spent messing around on the golf course (13). I...

World’s oldest person dies at 117

Emma Morano, an Italian woman believed to have been the oldest person alive and the last survivor of the 19th century, died Saturday at the age of 117, Italian media reported. Morano, born on November 29 1899, died at her home in Verbania, in northern Italy, the reports said. She had an extraordinary life, and we will always remember her strength to move forward in life, said Silvia Marchionini, the mayor of Verbania, a small village of some 2,000 residents. According to the US-based Gerontology Research Group (GRG), Morano ceded the crown of the world’s oldest human being to Jamaican Violet Brown, who was born on March 10, 1900. Morano’s death, at the age of 117 years and 137 days, means there is no one living known to have been born before 1900. Her first love died in Wo...

North Korea makes unsuccessful missile launch day after massive show of strength

North Korea launched a missile early on Sunday morning, but the weapon failed shortly after it was fired from a site near the port city of Sinpo. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said analysts have not yet identified the type of missile that was launched, but it comes just a day after the North Korean military paraded through the streets of Pyongyang with an array of weapons that included what might be a new generation of intercontinental ballistic missile that is capable of striking the American mainland. The parade was part of celebrations marking the 105th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il-sung, the founder of the North Korean state, and included a total of 56 missiles of 10 different models. They included Pukkuksong-1 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, which th...

Britain set to lose EU crown jewels of banking and medicine agencies

European Council president Donald Tusk will help determine where the two agencies leaving Britain will relocate. The EU is set to inflict a double humiliation on Theresa May, stripping Britain of its European agencies within weeks, while formally rejecting the prime minister’s calls for early trade talks. The Observer has learned that EU diplomats agreed their uncompromising position at a crunch meeting on Tuesday, held to set out the union’s strategy in the talks due to start next month. A beauty contest between member states who want the European banking and medicine agencies, currently located in London, will begin within two weeks, with selection criteria to be unveiled by the president of the European council, Donald Tusk. The European Banking Authority and the Europe...

Facebook cracks down on fake accounts

Facebook Inc said on Thursday it suspended 30,000 accounts in France as the social network giant steps up efforts to stop the spread of fake news, misinformation and spam. The move, which comes 10 days before the first round of a hotly contested French presidential election, is among the most aggressive yet by Facebook to move against accounts that violate its terms of service, rather than simply respond to complaints, reports the Reuters. Facebook is under intense pressure in Europe as governments across the continent threaten new laws and fines unless the company moves quickly to remove extremist propaganda or other content that violates local laws. The pressure on social media sites including Twitter, Google's YouTube and Facebook has intensified in the run-up to the el...

Desperate hospitals beg doctors to take on extra shifts at £95 an hour

Hospitals are so chronically understaffed they have been hiking pay rates in recent weeks and bombarding doctors with urgent emails and text messages in a bid to ensure standards of care do not suffer. On Tuesday, Peterborough City hospital raised the pay available for working overnight that night in its extremely busy A&E to £95 an hour for a 10-hour shift to try to attract recruits. Exceptionally, we approved a maximum hourly incentivised rate for our senior trust doctors. This will ensure safe medical staffing levels and enable the department to continue to give high quality care to all our patients, said Neil Doverty, the North West Anglia NHS foundation trust’s chief operating officer. Hospitals often scramble to make 11th hour arrangements to fill rotas. Last Mon...

Theresa May faces rebellion from her own MPs over foreign student numbers

Theresa May is facing a damaging Commons revolt next week by Conservative MPs who are pressing her to remove foreign students from the immigration figures. Rebel Tories claim they have enough support to inflict a humiliating defeat on Ms May, who is also under pressure from several cabinet ministers to stop counting overseas students as long-term migrants. The issue will come to a head on Wednesday when MPs debate an amendment to the Higher Education and Research Bill passed by the House of Lords last month. By 313 votes to 219, peers agreed that no student should be treated for public policy purposes as a long-term migrant to the UK for the duration of their studies. Tory whips are trying to contain the revolt, pleading with the party’s MPs not to “rock the boat now” and ...

Evacuees killed in Syria bus convoy blast

An explosion has hit a bus convoy carrying evacuees near the Syrian city of Aleppo, killing at least 39 people. It is believed that the buses involved were carrying residents evacuated from two pro-government villages in northern Syria when they were hit in Rashidin. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says that the blast was caused by a car bomb. Thousands of people have been stuck in dozens of buses in two separate convoys on the edge of Aleppo city for more than 30 hours. They are involved in a population transfer deal but have been stranded since the agreement stalled. Thousands of people from the pro-government areas of Foua and Kfraya are stuck by the edge of the city. A short distance away thousands more from the opposition towns of Madaya and Zabadani ...

Donald Trump-Russia investigation now has specific concrete and corroborative evidence of collusion

The official investigation into relations between Donald Trump and Russia now has specific, concrete and corroborative evidence of collusion, it has been reported. New evidence proves discussions took place between people in the Trump campaign and agents of [Russian] influence relating to the use of hacked material, a source allegedly told the Guardian. The developments come as it has emerged that Britain’s spy agencies were among the first to alert their American counterparts to contact between members of Mr Trump’s campaign team and Russian intelligence operatives. British and other European intelligence agencies first intercepted suspicious “interactions” between people associated with the US President and Russian officials in 2015 as part of routine surveillance of Rus...
