Bangladesh’s first two submarines commissioned

Bangladesh Navy has started its journey as a three-dimensional force as two submarines were commissioned in its fleet for the first time on Sunday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally commissioned the twin submarines named ‘Nabajatra’ and ‘Joyjatra’ in the navy at a colourful ceremony in the Chittagong Naval Berth this noon. She handed over the ‘commissioning formans’ to the commanding officers of the submarines procured from China and formally unveiled their name plaques as per the rules of the navy. ‘With the induction of the submarines, Bangladesh Navy has started its fresh journey with a new shape and strength alongside the progress of the country,’ Sheikh Hasina told the commissioning function of two submarines. The prime minister said a few countries of the world o...

WikiLeaks revelations put CIA on back foot

Another major leak of top secret materials has again put America’s top spies in hot water while delivering a coup for anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks. The group left the Central Intelligence Agency heavily bruised with the publication Tuesday of nearly 9,000 documents it said were only part of a huge trove of records, plans and malware code in its possession purportedly the entire CIA hacking arsenal. Adding insult to injury, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange scolded the agency as extremely careless to have lost control of the materials WikiLeaks said they got access to it via the circle of private contractors to US intelligence. This is a historic act of devastating incompetence, to have created such an arsenal and then stored it all in one place, Assange said. President...

Trump Demands 46 U.S. Attorneys Quit, Including Bharara

The Trump administration moved on Friday to sweep away most of the remaining vestiges of Obama administration prosecutors at the Justice Department, ordering 46 holdover United States attorneys to tender their resignations immediately including Preet Bharara, the United States attorney in Manhattan. The firings were a surprise especially for Mr. Bharara, who has a reputation for prosecuting public corruption cases. In November, Mr. Bharara met with then President-elect Donald J. Trump at Trump Tower in Manhattan and told reporters afterward that both Mr. Trump and Jeff Sessions, who is now the attorney general, had asked him about staying on, which the prosecutor said he expected to do. But on Friday, Mr. Bharara was among federal prosecutors who received a call from Dana ...

Fighter jets escort Air India passenger flight into Heathrow Airport

A plane carrying hundreds of passengers was escorted into Heathrow airport by German and Belgian fighter jets after it went off radar over Europe. Fighter jets were scrambled after the Air India plane lost contact with air traffic control as it flew over Hungary at around 8.15am on Friday. The UK-bound flight was on its way back from Gujarat in India and was passing over Eastern Europe when the loss of radio contact sparked fears it could have been hijacked. Hungarian, German and Belgian pilots flew fighter jets alongside the 787 Dreamliner plane, which was carrying 231 passengers, for two hours as it passed over Europe. The fault on the plane was fixed by the time the plane reached Britain, the Mail Online reported. By the time the plane was ready to land in Heathrow it i...

Refugees applying to live in UK face being sent home after five years

Refugees arrive on the Scottish Isle of Bute. The Home Office has announced a policy that refugees applying to settle permanently in Britain face a safe return review after five years. Tens of thousands of refugees who apply to live permanently in Britain are to be required to undergo an official review to see if it is safe for them to be sent back home, under new Home Office instructions. The new policy of reviewing whether all refugees still require protection five years after they first obtained asylum in Britain was quietly slipped out on Thursday and it is believed to take immediate effect. The new instructions were foreshadowed by Theresa May in her notorious “chilling and bitter” 2015 Conservative party conference speech when, as home secretary, she made clear that ...

Sex orgies, prostitution, porn: Allegations shake Catholic Church in Italy

Lurid accusations of priests involved in sex orgies, porn videos and prostitution have emerged from several parishes in Italy recently, sending shock waves all the way to the Vatican and challenging the high standards Pope Francis demands of clergy. In the southern city of Naples, for example, a priest was recently suspended from the parish of Santa Maria degli Angeli over claims he held gay orgies and used Internet sites to recruit potential partners whom he paid for sex. The allegations concerning the Rev. Mario D’Orlando were brought to the attention of the diocese when an anonymous letter was sent to a Naples bishop. D’Orlando denied the charges when he was summoned by the city’s archbishop, Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, but is now facing a formal inquiry conducted ...

Trump’s Obamacare replacement health bill suffers as voters recoil

Amid so much bluster and chaos, many ordinary Americans complain of whiplash as Donald Trump settles into the Oval Office. But after eight exhilarating weeks the tables are turning – now it's Trump who faces a political white-knuckle ride. The harping fake news media and even congressional Democrats are somewhat sidelined, because in trying to keep his promise to repeal and replace Obamacare, Trump must navigate factional trench warfare in his own Republican Party. The challenge is twofold. The self-proclaimed dealmaker is attempting a sleight of hand, by which millions of his own voters stand to be screwed. More than 80 per cent of them told election day exit pollsters that Obamacare had gone too far, but experts warn that under Trump's proposed deal they will be slugged ...

Islamic State fighters returning to UK pose huge challenge

Security officials in Britain are urgently preparing for hundreds of UK nationals who went to fight for Islamic State to return, following an expected defeat of the group in Iraq and Syria. The jihadi group’s strongholds in Mosul, Iraq, and Raqqa, northern Syria, are expected to fall by the summer. An exodus of foreign fighters from the area is thought already to have occurred. Security officials say they are particularly concerned by the prospect of very young children, including some who were born under IS rule in either Syria or Iraq, going to the UK with their parents. One government source said: “It is possible they are going to return indoctrinated, deeply dangerous and damaged. The only analogous experience we have is handling children caught up in extreme religious...
