Osama bin Laden’s video collection included where in the world Is Osama bin Laden

It’s impossible to know whether Osama bin Laden, sequestered in his Abbottabad hideout in Pakistan, ever turned on the DVD player and popped in a documentary he could instantly fact-check: Where in the World Is Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden’s video-viewing habits were highlighted Wednesday by the CIA, which released a trove of documents and media six years after the raid that killed the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. But for every insight from the release, there are dozens of head-scratchers, starting with bin Laden’s movie collection. The man once listed as No. 1 on the FBI’s most-wanted list had collected the kid movies Antz, Chicken Little and Cars. In addition to the more serious documentary on the international terrorist, there were BBC and National Geographi...

May replaces defence minister in growing harassment scandal

British Prime Minister Theresa May was forced to appoint a new defence minister on Thursday after her loyal ally  quit in a sexual harassment scandal that has prompted calls for an end to the locker room culture in parliament. Just hours after Fallon resigned over past behaviour he said had fallen ‘below the high standards we require of the armed forces’, May appointed Gavin Williamson, 41, a rising star in her ruling Conservative Party. Weakened after losing her party’s parliamentary majority in a June election, May had to move swiftly to plug the hole in her divided cabinet. Fallon’s departure was another blow for her as she has struggled to hold the cabinet together since the vote, which many Conservative Party members blamed on her. The growing harassment scandal could...

He stated this week that the "fake news is working overtime" in connection to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Collins also noted "Corbynmania" enjoyed a resurgence in 2017 thanks to general election coverage, after first emerging in 2015. Other politically relevant words were significant over the last 12 months, including "antifa", an abbreviation of "anti-fas...

Country changes name to distance itself from Russia

Kazakhstan has announced plans to switch the from Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet, its third change in less than 100 years. Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev has announced that the government of the former Soviet Republic will appoint a commission to oversee the “gradual transition of the Kazakh alphabet to the Latin-based script until 2025,” Al Jazeera reports. Kazakh is a Turkic language that was written in Arabic script until the 1920s. In 1929 the Soviet Union replaced the Arabic script with Latin, but 11 years later Latin was replaced with the Cyrillic alphabet, to be “more in line with the rest of the USSR”, the BBC says. Kazakhstan was a Soviet Republic before it declared its independence in 1991, but Russian is still more widely spoken in the country than Ka...

The Loophole Developers Use To Avoid Building More Affordable Homes

House builders are using a legal loophole to wriggle out of developing thousands of affordable homes in order to maximise profits, a housing charity has claimed. Shelter has released a dossier it claims shows the number of affordable homes in new-builds drops drastically after developers submit a viability assessment when applying for permission to build. These assessments allow developers to put in planning applications which do not hit council targets for affordable homes – claiming if they were to build those houses it would mean profits would be severely reduced. One council told HuffPost UK it feels it has no choice but to accept the lower affordable housing figure, or risk no development happening at all. According to Shelter, at least 2,500 affordable homes across E...

Brexit deal will favour EU

David Davis has suggested Britain's EU divorce deal will "favour" remaining member states as he signalled ministers are ready to accept demands to enshrine the Brexit agreement in law. Revealing the sixth round of formal negotiations will begin next week, the Brexit Secretary said the Government viewed Britain's withdrawal agreement and a deal on the future UK-EU relationship as inseparable. But, speaking to the House of Lords EU Committee, Mr Davis hinted Britain might have to pay a price in the divorce agreement as he looks to strike a long-term trade deal. In the infamous words or the famous words of the EU, nothing is agreed until everything is agreed, he told peers. And we see these as being linked to each other. The withdrawal agreement, on balance, will probably fav...

Labour activist Bex Bailey claims she was warned not to report rape at party event

A Labour activist has claimed she was raped at a party event and then advised by a senior official not to report the attack because it could damage her career. Bex Bailey, 25, has alleged she was attacked by a senior party figure, who was not an MP, at an event in 2011 when she was 19-years-old. She said she approached someone at the Labour Party headquarters to ask about reporting the attack but was discouraged from going to the police. Labour said it would launch an independent investigation into the claims. Ms Bailey decided to speak out about the event to BBC Radio 4, waiving her automatic right to anonymity granted to victims or alleged victims of sexual offences. She told Carolyn Quinn she was doing so in order to urge senior politicians to make it easier for people ...
