Welsh woman ties knot in Oz’s first gay marriage in Australia

Australia's first same-sex wedding has taken place following the country's vote to legalise gay marriage. Welsh-born Lauren Price, 31, and Amy Laker, 29, tied the knot in Sydney where they were pronounced "wife and wife" in front of 65 guests. It had been thought that the first possible date for same-sex weddings would be 9 January because of a four-week waiting period after the ground-breaking legislation was passed earlier this month. But the brides had special permission to marry without giving a month's notice to the New South Wales registry of births, deaths and marriages under a special exemption on financial grounds. Ms Price's family had already making the trip down under from Wales as the couple had planned to marry at the British consulate under UK law b...

Indian woman’s UK visa rejected for being over qualified in English

An Indian woman’s visa application was rejected by authorities in the United Kingdom because her English-language proficiency is much higher than what is required by the immigration department, she claimed in a Facebook post. Alexandria Rintoul, who is originally from Shillong, Meghalaya, passed an advanced version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), but the visa requirement is for a much easier exam, reports the Hindustan Times. ‘Some applicants for visas to settle in the UK need to pass an English language test at an approved centre that is specified in the immigration rules,’ a Home Office spokeswoman told the BBC. ‘Rintoul failed to do this and also failed to submit the necessary supporting evidence for her application. It is open to her to re...

Brexit plans will not be derailed

The Prime Minister has claimed her Government is "proving the doubters wrong" after securing a deal in the first phase of Brexit negotiations. Theresa May said her Brexit plans will not be "derailed" as senior ministers prepare to consider the future shape of the UK's relationship with the EU. She said talks would now begin on an "implementation period" immediately after the formal date of Brexit. But some Tory Eurosceptics have already warned they will not accept arrangements which resemble continued EU membership during the transition to a new relationship. Boris Johnson called for Mrs May to strike a deal with Brussels that would allow the UK to ditch EU laws, warning that being unable to diverge from the bloc's regulations would leave the UK a "vassal state".
