Two businessmen jailed over £200,000 horsemeat scandal

Two men have been jailed for their part in a conspiracy to sell 30 tonnes of horsemeat as beef. Andronicos Sideras, 55, one of the owners of meat manufacturer Dinos & Sons, mixed the products together before the mixture was sold to other firms in a plot that deceived consumers and food processors. Ulrik Nielsen, 58, the Danish owner of FlexiFoods, bought horsemeat and beef from suppliers across Europe and had it delivered to Dinos in Tottenham, north London. Nielsen's right-hand man, Alex Beech, 44, arranged for the shipments to be transferred and handled the accounting. The majority of the meat, including some from farm horses not sold for slaughter, made it into the food chain and, while the face value of the fraud was £177,869, police said the true cost had probably...

He is the son of Bin Laden’s third of six wives, Khairiah Sabar, and the eighth born of around 20 Bin Laden siblings. His mother came from a wealthy family and was known as a “strong-willed” woman. Tensions flare in cabinet over post Brexit free movement

Senior Conservative MPs are urging members of Theresa May’s cabinet to stop publicly setting out their demands for a transitional deal on Brexit, saying the move could make negotiations with the European Union more difficult. The warnings from senior leave campaigners and allies of the Brexit secretary, David Davis, come as ministers prepare to clash over issues of immigration and trade in a series of key meetings this autumn. Philip Hammond, Amber Rudd, Damian Green, David Gauke and Greg Clarke are among those likely to push the prime minister to accept that while free movement will officially end, there should be no immediate move to reduce immigration. Amber Rudd is among those likely to push the prime minister to accept that while free movement will officially end ther...

As per High Court rules Tony Blair cannot be prosecuted over Iraq war

The High Court has blocked a bid by a former chief of staff of the Iraqi army to bring a private prosecution against Tony Blair over the Iraq war. General Abdul Wahed Shannan Al Rabbat has accused Mr Blair, while UK prime minister, of committing a crime of aggression by invading Iraq in 2003 to overthrow President Saddam Hussein. The general wanted to prosecute Mr Blair and two other key ministers at the time foreign secretary Jack Straw and attorney general Lord Goldsmith. His lawyers asked London's High Court for permission to seek judicial review in an attempt to get the Supreme Court, now the highest court in the land, to overturn a ruling by the House of Lords in 2006 that there is no such crime as the crime of aggression under the law of England and Wales. Lord Thoma...

Aviation bursting at seams in busiest ever summer for Airports and Airlines

The busiest-ever summer for holidays abroad is putting unprecedented strain on airlines, airports and passengers, research by The Independent has shown. Thousands of travellers remain stranded after their weekend flights were cancelled, with easyJet alone grounding at least 28 flights. The budget airline is blaming congested airspace, particularly in the London area, adverse weather and air traffic control delays. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are handling far more passengers than their design capacities. Airspace over France, used by more than 1,000 British flights every day, has too few staff to handle the growth in traffic. And tougher passport checks at European airports mean passengers face queues of up to four hours to pass border controls, with thousands of flights ...

Putin says US will have to shed 755 from diplomatic staff

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Sunday the United States would have to cut its embassy and consulate staff in Russia by 755, heightening tensions between Washington and Moscow three days after the U.S. Congress approved sanctions against Russia. In response, the U.S. State Department deemed it a regrettable and uncalled for act. Russian's Foreign Ministry on Friday ordered a reduction by Sept. 1 in the number of U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia. It said it is ordering the U.S. Embassy to limit the number of embassy and consular employees in the country to 455 in response to approval of the new package of American sanctions. The White House has said U.S. President Donald Trump would sign those sanctions into law. Russian President Vladimir Putin looks on attending ...

The Royals urged not to have third baby

A San-Francisco based children's organisation, Having Kids, has written an open letter to Prince William and Kate, urging the royal couple not to have another baby. The company, which promotes smaller families, has posted the letter on their official website, "respectfully" asking the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to consider forgoing having a third child. The letter, signed by the company's president Carter Dillard and executive director Anne Green, noted the influence that Prince William and Kate have as public figures, and the power they have to model a sustainable small family. The letter cited environmental reasons like climate change, economic equality and the distribution of resources. It continued: Of course, we know that Prince George and Princess Charlotte are ce...

Brexit Is Already Hurting The German Economy: Warns Country’s Top Business Group

Brexit is already damaging Germany’s trade with the UK and it is set to get worse, the European power-house’s leading business group has warned. Speaking to HuffPost UK, the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) - which represents more than three million business and entrepreneurs - cautioned that even if the UK strikes a free trade deal with the EU, the impact of trade barriers would only be “reduced” - not completely neutralised. The warning comes as Brexit talks between the UK and EU appear on the brink of collapse as both sides want the other to make the first sign of compromise on the size of the divorce bill. With fewer than 20 months before the UK officially leaves the EU, there is precious little time for delays to the negotiations, and if ...

UK strips 150 jihadis and other criminals of citizenship to prevent influx of militants from Syria

The UK has stripped more than 150 suspected jihadists and other criminals of their citizenship to stop them returning, it has been reported. Ministers have issued the deprivation orders in case the collapse of the Islamic State in the Middle East leads to a sudden influx of militants from Syria, according to the Sunday Times. Quoting official figures and security sources, the paper said more than 40 suspects have had their right to a passport removed this year, with about 30 targeted since March. It added those who have had their citizenship removed include gunmen and "jihadi brides" who have travelled to Syria. The news comes as the Syrian army and its allies reported made gains in the last IS-held territories in Homs province. They are all dual nationals, including Briti...
