14 migrants accused of trying to steal French trawler

According to a local prosecutor, Pascal Marconville, who spoke to news service AFP, the migrants included a mother and her two children and they claimed to have come from Iraq. Police continue to look for two individuals whom they suspect of being the people smugglers involved in the incident, according to Mr Marconville. The claims follow a series of attempted Channel crossings in recent days, which have prompted UK Home Secretary to declare a major incident. Of the total number of attempted crossings, 42% were intercepted by French authorities before they made it to the UK. On Monday, Mr Javid said patrol vessels will be brought back from overseas to the Channel as part of efforts to stem migrant crossings to UK shores via small boats. In December, around 230 mi...

Trump ready and willing to discuss shutdown

In a New Year's Eve interview with Fox News, Donald Trump indicated that he is willing to talk to Democrats about ending the partial government shutdown that has stretched into its second week. I'm in Washington, I'm ready and willing and able, I'm in the White House and I'm ready to go, Trump said. They can come over right now, they could have come over at any time. I spent Christmas at the White House, I spent New Year's Eve now in the White House. I'm here. I'm ready to go. Trump also said that he expects talks with future House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will resume once the two Democrats return to Washington. London celebrates spectacular fireworks display to welcomes 2019

More than 100,000 spectators gathered in London on Monday evening to watch Europe's largest annual firework display as the world welcomed the new year with a series of spectacular celebrations. With less than three months until Britain leaves the EU, London mayor Sadiq Khan said the display showed Europe that the capital will remain open-minded and outward looking post-Brexit. Big Ben returned to action to kick off the sold-out show Europe's largest annual firework display after a year of renovation works. As London's landmark clock tower chimed, 70,000 projectiles made up of 12,000 fireworks lit up the sky above the capital in an occasion Mr Khan hoped would "send a message of support" to the more than one million European citizens who call the city their home. Firms with no ships defend no-deal Brexit contract

A shipping firm handed a £13.8m contract to run extra ferries in the event of a no-deal Brexit, has defended itself amid criticism it doesn't currently have any ships. Questions were raised over the Government's preparations after it emerged Seaborne Freight was one of three companies awarded contracts totalling £108m last week to lay on additional freight crossings to ease the pressure on Dover. Seaborne said it was on track to start twice-daily sailings by the end of March when the UK is due to leave the EU having initially planned to launch Ramsgate-Ostend crossings during February. A Department for Transport spokesman said: This contract was awarded in the full knowledge that Seaborne Freight is a new shipping provider, and that the extra capacity and vessels w...

Ballot boxes stuffed overnight, alleges Dr Kamal

Accusing the ruling party men of stuffing ballot boxes overnight well before the start of voting, Jatiya Oikyafront chief Dr Kamal Hossian on Sunday voiced concern over the peaceful holding of the national election. He came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after casting his vote at Voqarunnisa Noon School centre in the morning. Reports have it from outside Dhaka that votes have been cast overnight unlawfully depriving the voters of their right which is very disturbing, he said. Millions of lives had been laid down in 1971 and thereafter in the Liberation War and different democratic movements for establishing the voting right, Kamal said. Through casting votes, he said, people exercise their rights to the state. Dr Kamal said there are around 160 mi...

Migrant crisis a major inciden

Home secretary Sajid Javid has spoken out on the English Channel migrant crisis, saying it's vital to strike a balance between protecting them and protecting our borders. It comes after Mr Javid cut short his family holiday to deal with the major incident of rising numbers of migrants attempting to cross the Channel by boat. In a statement, Mr Javid said on Saturday: The situation in the Channel is of grave concern, with people gambling their lives in reckless attempts to reach the UK in unsafe boats and treacherous conditions. It is vital we strike a balance between protecting them and protecting our borders, ensuring we do not encourage more people to make this dangerous journey. We have been working closely with our domestic partners and the French for some tim...

Gatwick drone sightings may have been of police equipment

Drone sightings which shut down Gatwick airport for 36 hours may have been reports of  Sussex Police's aircraft, the force's Chief Constable has admitted. Police received 115 reports of sightings in the area, including 92 which have been confirmed as coming from credible people, Sussex Police's Chief Constable Giles York said. But the force launched its own drone to search for what officers believed at the time to be malicious aircraft deliberately being flown above the airfield to intentionally force the airport into lockdown. Sussex Police's most senior officer told the BBC police have searched 26 potential launch sites for drones near the airport but do not believe they have found the drone thought to have been flown near runways on December 19 and 20. I don't ...

Traffic thins out in Dhaka as residents leave to vote

The densely populated capital city has acquired a festive mood since traffic snarls have all but disappeared from its streets ahead of the general elections, slated to be held tomorrow. Normally, the city streets are free of traffic jam only during the Eid holidays as the people go to their native villages to celebrate Eid with their kith and kin. But this time, residents have been leaving Dhaka in hordes for a different purpose: to exercise their franchise in the upcoming national polls. The people are enjoying three days vacation as the government has declared polling day December 30 a public holiday. The two days preceding the polls Friday and Saturday are weekly holidays, which has created a vacation mood in the nation. This correspondent visited the busiest ...
