Police handling of Gatwick drones a mess up

Home Secretary Sajid Javid also took part in the call, along with representatives from the Cabinet Office, the Ministry of Defence and Sussex Police. The disruption, which began at about 9pm on Wednesday, affected about 1,000 flights and ruined the travel plans of more than 140,000 people. Ministers have labelled the police handling of communications surrounding the Gatwick Airport drone sightings as a mess-up, Sky News understands. After an hour-long conference call on Monday chaired by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, it was acknowledged police have not handled their communication response well. Detective Chief Superintendent Jason Tingley said on Sunday that there were some persons of interest and denied the investigation was back to square one. There is a ...

The Indonesia tsunami washed away a pop band as it played

The band was revving up the crowd at the private, beachside concert, the lead singer punctuating musical notes with pumping fists We. Are. Seventeen! unaware of the approaching danger. As he walked across the stage Saturday night, a tsunami hit the shore of Tanjung Lesung beach on the western tip of Java, Indonesia, knocking the stage out from under the band and bringing the concert to a sudden and tragic end. According to Reuters, four people connected to the band were killed: bassist M. Awal Bani Purbani, road manager Oki Wijaya, guitarist Herman Sikumbang and crew member Ujang. The band’s drummer was still missing, as was the lead singer’s wife. The private concert by pop band Seventeen was part of an end-of-year celebration for Perusahaan Listrik Negara, the c...

May’s allies planning for her to remain PM until 2021

Theresa May’s allies are determined to keep her in power until 2021 as support for her Brexit plans grows, according to The Times . Those close to the prime minister say there is growing confidence that she will succeed with her Brexit agreement, and that she should stay in power to see the deal through. Just a week ago Mrs May’s senior colleagues were preparing for a second referendum without her knowledge, and now, according to those close to the party, there are a number of MPs preparing to support her withdrawal agreement. It’s thought that Mrs May herself might have been involved in discussions, and would see her ride through two more reshuffles between now and 2021. This would allow her to slay the old guard and create a new strata of loyal ministers. There ...

Al Qaeda is targeting Europe for terror attacks against airliners and airports

A resurgent Al-Qaeda is targeting Europe for terror attacks against airliners and airports, the security minister has warned. Ben Wallace said the decline of Isis after becoming the latest terrorist boy band had created renewed space for the group made infamous by the September 11 atrocity in 2001. He revealed the government was ploughing £25m into a research programme to protect planes from new methods of explosion and insider threats. And he warned: The aviation threat is real. Aviation is still a blue riband event for these terrorists. Al-Qaeda are resurgent. They have reorganised. They are pushing more and more plots towards Europe and have become familiar with new methods and still aspire to aviation attacks. British businesses have also been warned that Isl...

Indonesia tsunami: Horror as band hit by waves mid-concert

At least 222 people have been killed after a tsunami likely triggered by a volcanic eruption devastated beaches around Sunda Strait in Indonesia. Another 843 other people have been injured and dozens are missing after giant waves slammed into the islands of Java and Sumatra on Saturday night. The British Embassy in Indonesia tweeted: On Sat, 22 Dec 2018 the coastline around Sunda Strait which lies btween Java & Sumatra experienced a tsunami/high-tide, with damage & casualties reported. If in the area, please follow local authorities’ advice & check our Travel Advice. Ben van der Pluijm, an earthquake geologist and a professor in the University of Michigan in the US, said the tsunami may have been caused by a partial collapse of Krakatoa. He said: Inst...

Amber Rudd slams Juncker behaviour

Amber Rudd has slammed European Commission president Jean Claude Juncker as ghastly adding that his grotesque behaviour towards women should be officially investigated. The Work and Pensions Secretary hit out over footage from last week's European Council meeting in Brussels which showed him playing with a woman's hair. Ms Rudd told The Telegraph he would probably have been subject to an official complaint if it happened in the UK. In a wide-ranging interview, which will fuel speculation she has leadership ambitions, she said: It's grotesque. I mean, if that happened in our Parliament I hope there would be a formal complaint. When I used to go the EU for meetings, I often had a terrible cold to insist that I didn't get enveloped in a bear hug. All the EU commissio...

Man and woman held in Gatwick Airport drone chaos probe

A man and a woman are being held on suspicion of disrupting an airport after the drone activity which caused chaos at Gatwick. The 47-year-old man and 54-year-old woman, from Crawley in West Sussex, were arrested in the town around five miles from the airport – at about 10pm on Friday. Sussex Police said the pair are being held on suspicion of “disrupting services of civil aviation aerodrome to endanger or likely to endanger safety of operations or persons”. Superintendent James Collis said: “Our investigations are still ongoing and our activities at the airport continue to build resilience to detect and mitigate further incursions from drones, by deploying a range of tactics. Flights were briefly grounded at the airport on Friday evening after a fresh sighting at...

Police hunt drone suspects as Gatwick reopens

The first plane to take off in 36 hours left for Lapland at 6.33 on Friday morning, after the airport announced that the runway was open and flights would be arriving and departing. However, delays and disruption will continue and those travelling have been advised to check with their airline before leaving for the airport. Pilots' union BALPA says it remains extremely concerned that flights have resumed while the threat of drones reappearing remains. Gatwick's Chief Operating Officer Chris Woodroofe said: A number of mitigating measures in place provided by a number of government agencies and the military to ensure that I have the confidence to be able to reopen by airport. Its website says the range of sensors and their detection techniques ensure a high probabi...
The End of Europe

The End of Europe

Ever since World War II, the liberal global order that has spread more freedom and prosperity around the world than at any other time in history has been held up by two pillars: the United States of America and the United Nations of Europe, now known as the European Union. Both of these centers of free markets, free people and free ideas are being shaken today by rural and beyond-the-suburbs insurgencies of largely white working-poor and anxious middle classes, which have not generally benefited from the surges in globalization, immigration and technology that have lifted superstar cities like London, Paris and San Francisco and their multicultural populations. The middle classes that powered the growth of the U.S. and the E.U. in the 20th century were built on so...

EU unveils plan to limit damage of no-deal Brexit

Jeremy Corbyn appeared to say stupid woman towards Theresa May at Prime Minister's Questions. The Labour leader appeared to mouth the words at the end of their PMQs clash, where Mr Corbyn had accused Mrs May of dithering over her Brexit plan. While audio of Mr Corbyn's comment was not recorded on the House of Commons' microphone system, he was in full view of TV cameras at the time. Conservative Party chairman Brandon Lewis said on Twitter: Will jeremycorbyn apologise or clarify exactly what he was saying? Looks shocking on the film, unacceptable in any environment. Mrs May replied: I think that everybody in this house, particularly in this 100th year anniversary of women getting the vote, should be aiming to encourage women to come in to this chamber and to stand...
