US admiral warns of Russia’s submarine capabilities

Russia is bolstering its underwater battle capabilities in a direct challenge to US forces in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, a top US admiral warned Friday. Admiral James Foggo, who heads NATO's Allied Joint Force Command in Naples, said Russia is investing heavily in its submarine fleet and wants to build an asymmetric threat to the US and NATO. While the Russian navy knows it cannot compete on the level of aircraft carriers and larger surface vessels, they have continued to do research and development and recapitalize the undersea domain, Foggo told Pentagon reporters. They see it as one (in) which there is a challenge, and that challenge is the United States Navy and the United States submarine force. Foggo said the Russians currently have six Kilo-class diese...

I am independent impartial: Kavanaugh pens highly unusual op-ed

Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh penned an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal published Thursday evening in which he defended his emotional testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. I was very emotional last Thursday, more so than I have ever been. I might have been too emotional at times. I know that my tone was sharp, and I said a few things I should not have said, he wrote. Kavanaugh became visibly emotional when refuting allegations of sexual misconduct three women publicly leveled against him. After all those meetings and after my initial hearing concluded, I was subjected to wrongful and sometimes vicious allegations. My time in high school and college, more than 30 years ago, has been ridiculously distorted. My wife and daughte...

Irish PM tells May: Publish border plan as soon as possible

Ireland’s prime minister has urged Theresa May to publish her revised Brexit border plan as soon as possible so the UK and EU can seal a Brexit deal in November. Leo Varadkar said the UK must not delay until a few days before a crunch summit on 17-18 October because the EU needed time to respond to it in a meaningful way if talks were to advance. We want there to be decisive progress at the October summit, so that allows us to seal a deal in November, he said. The Irish leader was speaking to journalists in between a series of meetings with EU leaders in Brussels, as exit talks enter a critical fortnight before the make-or-break October summit. Donald Tusk, the president of the European council, piled pressure on the British government to strike a compromise and cr...

Teacher admits sending flirty texts but denies having sex with student

A teacher accused of having sex with a 16-year-old pupil in a plane toilet admitted to police she had flirted with him, a jury has heard. Eleanor Wilson, 29, told detectives she had given the boy her mobile telephone number and sent him flirty texts but said allegations she had had sex with him made her sick. Wilson told police the alleged incident on the plane did not happen and that during the flight she had instead been looking after students who were ill before falling asleep. The prosecution at Bristol crown court has claimed that the intimate relationship continued following their return from the school trip. Wilson allegedly informed the teenager she was pregnant with their child but was going to have an abortion. Wilson told police: The whole time I thought...

Brexit breakthrough: Ireland backs May’s customs union plan

Ahead of a crucial EU summit this month, the British prime minister is seeking to resolve a dispute over the backstop to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland. One of the proposals she is working on to take effect if no other solution to the Irish border issue is found is for the whole UK to participate in a customs union with the EU. Michel Barnier, chief EU negotiator, has rejected the idea, but officials in Dublin privately argue it could settle the border question and open the way to a deal. It looks like it would resolve that issue [of the border], said a senior Irish official involved in Brexit talks. Whether Europe accept it or not is another conversation. The Irish intervention will help Mrs May in the run-up to the EU summit on October 18 as she at...

Russia in cyber attack on UK govt

Russian spies launched cyber attacks against Britain's government and a global chemical weapons watchdog after the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal, it is claimed. The GRU military intelligence service allegedly targeted computers at the Foreign Office and the Porton Down defence research lab and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to infiltrate the nerve agent attack probe. The Netherlands said four Russian intelligence officers were expelled after they were caught with spying equipment at a hotel next to the OPCW headquarters in The Hague in April. The GRU is also accused of targeting files on the investigation into Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was shot down over territory held by Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. R...
