Coronavirus could spread quickly on tube

Doctors have warned the London Underground could be a hotbed for the spread of the highly-contagious coronavirus. There have been nine confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK confirmed so far, as British hospitals brace themselves for more. The Tube is used by an estimated 2 million people a day, and many more also use rail networks and buses in and around the bustling capital. An estimated 9 million people live in London, but the city's population swells to more than 10 million on an average day - taking into account commuters into the capital for work, tourists and visitors. The extensive transport network and huge population means tracking down potentially infected people is next to impossible to do with any urgency. The warning for Tube riders comes after a Lon...

Gang stabbed 55-year-old tourist and stole £115k watch

The tourist stabbed before his £115,000 Breguet Tourbillon watch was wrenched from his wrist in a 'shocking' and violent daylight robbery in London's Mayfair is a property developer from Manchester, MailOnline can reveal today. Bo Khan, 55, was knifed as three men took the timepiece in Berkeley Square in front of his horrified wife Karen, 56, on the final day of their romantic break to the capital on June 9 last year. Mr Khan says police have told him gangs of up to three men have been prowling Mayfair looking for victims - stabbing downwards into a victim's elbow with a razor-sharp knife to cut the tendons so they are paralysed when they grab valuable timepieces from wrists. The Mancunian property developer, who has shared images of his own horrific injuries, reve...

Terror victim was bleeding out in a pool of blood

A man has told Sky News how he helped one of the three people injured in the Streatham terror attack, saying he was bleeding out in a pool of blood. Dave Chawner said he was heading to the cinema when he saw what he thought was a shoplifting taking place with a man running down the street and bumping into someone before they fell to the ground and then got up again. He then heard shouting and what he thought was a car backfiring, followed by two minor explosions. He said he didn’t assume these were gunshots until he saw two police officers pointing a gun at an assailant. Mr Chawner said he saw a man on the other side of the road who was down on the ground and "not lucid". Mr Chawner had a blanket with him for his cinema visit, which was placed over the victim's w...

Queen calls family crisis meeting

The Queen has summoned senior royals to an emergency summit at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Monday to discuss the future of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The meeting will be an opportunity for them to discuss proposals, drawn up after a series of consultations between palace officials and representatives of the UK and Canadian governments over how Meghan and Harry can achieve their aim of carving out new “progressive” roles as hybrid royals. Transport for London confirms fresh delays to Crossrail opening

The opening of London's Crossrail project has been delayed once again as the completion date was pushed back another six months to late 2021. Transport for London confirmed today that the central London section would not open until Autumn 2021 at the earliest, meaning the whole project will be three years behind schedule. The project, Europe's biggest ongoing infrastructure scheme, has been cursed with delays and is now estimated to cost more than £18billion. TfL commissioner Mike Brown told the London Assembly today that more time was needed to test trains before the scheme, to be called the Elizabeth line, could open. Once up and running, the line will run from Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. Stage 4 of the scheme, in w...

Newly face lifted Big Ben will ring in London New Year

Britain's Big Ben bell in parliament's landmark clock tower will ring at midnight on New Year's Eve, marking the start of a year for the first time since its new face was revealed from under scaffolding halfway through restoration work. The work has seen the 96-metre-tall Elizabeth Tower, one of the most photographed buildings in Britain, enveloped in scaffolding for the last two years as the four clock dials are reglazed, ironwork repainted and intricately carved stonework cleaned and repaired. In March, part of the scaffolding was removed, showing that the clock's once black numerals and hands have been repainted blue, in line with what scientists say was its original colour. Since restoration work began in 2017, Big Ben has been largely silenced, sounding only f...
