NASA warns that asteroid larger than the Empire State Building could smash into Earth

The asteroid, labelled 2015 BN509 by NASA, flew past the Earth last week at close to 44,000mph. At its closest point, it was 14 times the distance between the Earth and the moon. The asteroid measures roughly 200m (660ft) wide and 400m (1,310ft) long. But the American space agency has labelled it potentially hazardous and warned that it could one day strike the Earth. It was captured on film by the Arecibo Observatory, a giant radio telescope, during its flyby of the Earth. The skyscraper-sized chunk of rock can be clearly seen tumbling through the blackness of space. Dr Edgard Rivera-Valentín, a planetary scientist with the Universities Space Research Association who studies data from The Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, told Business Insider: The peanut shape comes fr...

10 bad habits that damage your car

When something's going wrong with your car, chances are it will try to tell you. Any strange vibrations, intermittent squeaks, occasional knocks, or other unusual symptoms should be inspected right away. You might not feel any problems but the longer you wait, the more trouble you could be in if a part suddenly fails and you're left stranded on the side of the road. These little mistakes we do every day are slowing killing our cars. Ignoring the Parking Brake Even if you're parked on a level surface, there's really no reason not to use the parking brake. Not engaging the parking brake puts the entire weight of your vehicle on a little piece of metal in the transmission called the parking pawl. It's only about as big as your finger, so it can wear out or break eventually fr...

He didn’t provide details about his faith. The title of his holiday greeting on Facebook was celebrating Christmas. Drone safety crackdown on reckless users could see mandatory registration introduced

Proposal part of Department for Transport consultation on improving drone safety over concerns about dangerous flying and use of the technology to deliver drugs and weapons into prisons Mandatory registration for new drones could be introduced in a bid to crack down on reckless users. The proposal is part of a Department for Transport (DfT) consultation on improving drone safety. It is hoped the scheme could help authorities identify the owners of drones that are flown illegally. The consultation will also consider whether there is a need for a new criminal offence for misuse of drones. Professional services firm PwC published a report in May that estimated that the global market for drone use will be worth $127 billion (£103 billion) in the coming years. Aviation minister...

Earth woefully unprepared for surprise comet or asteroid, Nasa scientist warns

The biggest problem, basically, is there’s not a hell of a lot we can do about it at the moment, said Dr Joseph Nuth, a researcher with Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Speaking at the annual meeting of American Geophysical Union, Nuth noted that large and potentially dangerous asteroids and comets are extremely rare, compared to the small objects that occasionally explode in Earth’s sky or strike its surface. But on the other hand they are the extinction-level events, things like dinosaur killers, they’re 50 to 60 million years apart, essentially. You could say, of course, we’re due, but it’s a random course at that point. Comets follow distant paths from Earth but sometimes get knocked into the neighbourhood. Nuth said that the Earth had a close encounter in 1996, whe...
