Gunman who blasted man in head in front of terrified Christmas shoppers outside Primark escaped on push bike

Police now believe the shooter in the lunchtime attack in Southport fired a shotgun from about a road's width away - spraying pellets across a street packed with terrified Christmas shoppers. Amazingly perhaps due to the gunman's carelessness in firing from a distance  the victim survived the attack despite suffering what are described as non-life threatening head injuries. Liverpool Echo It's now known that a bus driver who was stood in the street waiting to change vehicles also suffered minor injuries after being hit by one of those stray pellets. Tonight shocked locals are saying that it could have been much, much worse especially with so many children stood nearby at the time. And the gunman is still at large and the weapon yet to be recovered. In the immedia...

Theresa May’s Cabinet reshuffle in January will be wider than expected

The safest Christmas bet is that the workaholic Theresa May will not switch off for long during her mini-break. Her mind will soon drift back to the item at the top of her in-tray for the New Year: a Cabinet reshuffle. Before she sacked her deputy Damian Green on Wednesday, May’s advisers had been urging her to shake up her top team and bring some fresh blood into the Government’s junior and middle ranks. No decision had been taken and some advised May to keep a reshuffle up her sleeve until after next May’s local authority elections, when the Conservatives are likely to get a bloody nose, especially in London. Green’s departure has now made a January reshuffle inevitable, and it will probably be wider than expected. Although Green had known May since Oxford Univers...

The British elite is at war with itself on a scale we’ve never seen before

When I first started working at the BBC, in 2001, what struck me was not how most of the people in charge were from the same universities, or that it was assumed you were a ski enthusiast, or how casually people dropped the names of powerful people they knew. It was the uniformity of thinking. There were progressive people and conservative people, but they mostly subscribed to the groupthink of the elite. Surveying the levels of anger, abuse and fractiousness in the upper levels of British society today, it feels like a very different country. The Daily Mail’s front page, attacking the Tory Brexit rebels and triggering an avalanche of threats and abuse, was just the latest example of a culture war inside the British elite that makes any remaining class resentment against t...

Jeremy Corbyn says he will be PM if general election held next year

In a candid interview, in which he spoke of his musical tastes and style sense, the Labour leader declared: “I’m ready to be Prime Minister tomorrow. And the former backbench firebrand, known for his unkempt appearance, admitted that if he did win the top job he was unlikely to smarten himself up. Mr Corbyn confounded his critics when he thwarted Theresa May’s bid to clinch a majority in June’s snap election. Labour claimed an extra 30 seats compared with the 2015 performance under previous chief Ed Miliband. And Mr Corbyn told Grazia magazine he believes 2018 will be the year in which he pockets the keys to No10. Lord Falconer, the shadow justice secretary, makes clear that he is opposed to nearly every policy so far pledged by his leader and John McDonnell, the shadow ch...

Brexit plans will not be derailed

The Prime Minister has claimed her Government is "proving the doubters wrong" after securing a deal in the first phase of Brexit negotiations. Theresa May said her Brexit plans will not be "derailed" as senior ministers prepare to consider the future shape of the UK's relationship with the EU. She said talks would now begin on an "implementation period" immediately after the formal date of Brexit. But some Tory Eurosceptics have already warned they will not accept arrangements which resemble continued EU membership during the transition to a new relationship. Boris Johnson called for Mrs May to strike a deal with Brussels that would allow the UK to ditch EU laws, warning that being unable to diverge from the bloc's regulations would leave the UK a "vassal state".
