North Korea will press ahead with nuclear weapons programme

The Kim Jong-un regime is determined to press ahead with the development of nuclear weapons and is unlikely to scale down any of its activities, said a North Korean diplomat who recently defected to South Korea. He said Kim will not stop the nuclear programme even if he is offered trillions of dollars in aid. In his first public address since he defected, the high-profile diplomat Thae Yong-ho said he would do everything in his capacity to work against the North Korean regime. Thae, formerly the No 2 at the North Korean diplomatic mission in the UK, had left for South Korea from the London embassy along with his family sending diplomatic shockwaves in July. As long as Kim Jong-un is (in power), North Korea will never give up its nuclear weapons... the North will not give t...

Donald Trump’s anti-establishment cabinet owns more wealth than the annual GDP of 87 countries

It's no secret that Donald Trump’s cabinet is richer than your nan’s Christmas pudding. Todd Ricketts, Trump’s pick for deputy commerce secretary, has an estimated net worth of $4.5 billion, and the new secretary of commerce, Wilbur Ross, is worth $2.5bn. Altogether, the cabinet is worth an estimated $14.5bn. That’s more than the GDP of 87 countries (or 14 countries combined,) according to UN data from 2014. And Trump still has a few picks left to make. Unsurprisingly, there are worries Trump's cabinet will make decisions to benefit their own bulging bank accounts. The man of the people’s cabinet includes a billionaire heiress, a former Goldman Sachs partner, which is weird, considering Trump has promised to “drain the swamp” of politicians to end corruption in government....

Barack Obama and Shinzo Abe made a historic pilgrimage about World War II

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with U.S. President Barack Obama, speaks at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, Tuesday. In Honolulu. Abe and Obama made a historic pilgrimage Tuesday to the site where the devastating surprise attack sent America marching into World War II. The leaders of Japan and the United States sought to remind the world that even the most bitter enemies can become allies, during a historic pilgrimage to the hallowed waters of Pearl Harbor. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did not apologize, but conceded Japan "must never repeat the horrors of war again." Seventy-five years after Japan's surprise attack, Abe and President Barack Obama peered down Tuesday at the rusting wreckage of the USS Arizona, clearly visible in the tranquil, teal water. In a show of respe...

Romanian president rejects country’s first ever Muslim prime minister nomination

Romania’s president has rejected the nomination of the country’s first ever Muslim candidate for prime minister. President Klaus Iohannis said he had “carefully weighed the arguments for and against” appointing Sevil Shhaideh and had decided not to accept the nomination. Ms Shhaideh, who is a member of the country’s Muslim Tartar minority, had been put forward by the Social Democratic Party, which comprehensively won Romania's election earlier this month with 45 per cent of the vote. She was nominated by party leader Liviu Dragnea, who would normally have assumed the post himself but is unable to do so because of a conviction for electoral fraud. Some had suggested he was instead planning to run the government through Ms Shhaideh, who has only a few months' experience in g...

Donald Trump dismisses United Nations as just a club for people to have a good time

Donald Trump has described the United Nations as being just a club for people to have a good time, after the U.N. Security Council voted last week to condemn Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The president-elect wrote Monday on Twitter that the U.N. has such great potential, but it has become just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad! And on Friday, Mr Trump warned, As to the U.N., things will be different after Jan. 20th, referring to the day he takes office. The decision by the Obama administration to abstain from Friday's U.N. vote brushed aside Mr Trump's demands that the U.S. exercise its veto and provided a climax to years of icy relations with Israel's leadership. Meanwhile, the billionaire businessman took to T...

Refugees returning to secret camps in Calais

Hundreds of refugees have returned to live in secret camps in the Calais region in the hope of travelling to the UK, The Independent can reveal, just weeks after the demolition of the Jungle shantytown. There are at least six informal settlements in rural parts of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, each housing scores of refugees and migrants, with numbers growing steadily in recent weeks. It comes two months after the closure of the Jungle, which was intended to bring an end to the refugee situation in Calais by destroying the camp and dispersing its residents to reception centres (CAOs) across France an operation the authorities hailed as a success. However, scores of refugees and migrants who were taken on buses to CAO centres have now started making the journey back to the...

Obama vs Trump: Dispute erupts over who would have won

In an alternate universe in which President Barack Obama ran for a third term against Donald Trump, who would have won? No surprise: The president and the president-elect disagree. A fresh dispute erupted Monday between Obama and his successor, spurred by Obama's hypothetical musings that had he run again, he would have been victorious. Interviewed for a podcast, Obama suggested he still holds enough sway over the coalition of voters that elected him twice to get them to vote for him once again. I am confident in this vision because I'm confident that if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could've mobilized a majority of the American people to rally behind it, Obama told his former White House adviser, David Axelrod, in a podcast released Monday. Trump, naturall...

Article 50 marks sterling’s final dip: Brexit talks to rock pound

Baml expects sterling to rise to $1.29 by the end of the year, while Morgan Stanley believes sterling will climb to $1.26 against the dollar by the end of next year and $1.45 by the end of 2018. The pound faces a rollercoaster ride next year as policymakers start the process of leaving the European Union, analysts have warned. The expected triggering of Article 50 in the first quarter of 2017 is predicted to push down the value of sterling against a basket of major currencies, dragging it to a 32-year low against the dollar. The start of two years of formal Brexit negotiations with Brussels is expected to push the pound down by more than 5pc against the dollar and euro from current levels of $1.2290 and €1.1764, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch (Baml), Morgan Sta...
