Disability benefits system to be overhauled in UK

The Government is planning a major overhaul of the way claimants for disability benefits are assessed in a drive to help more people back into work. Work and Pensions Secretary Damian Green will on Monday announce the launch of a consultation on reform of the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) tests, the Press Association reported. The current system has been labelled “cruel” and “callous” by some. Ministers say they want to provide more “targeted and personalised support” for people with disabilities while they look for employment. The move was broadly welcomed by disability charities who said the current system was “fundamentally flawed” but campaigners warned that those who were unable to work must continue to receive the support they needed. Green said the proposed chang...

Bangladesh won the first test victory over England

Bangladesh Sunday recorded their first Test victory over England, taking all ten wickets in a single session thanks to teenage off-spin sensation Mehedi Hasan Miraz to win the second Test by 108 runs and square the series. Celebrations erupted at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla Stadium and across the country as Bangladeshis revelled in one of the proudest moments in their sporting history. Chasing a target of 273, England seemed to be cruising when Alastair Cook and Ben Duckett guided them to 100 without loss at tea. But 19-year-old Mehedi, playing in only his second Test, triggered a dramatic collapse in the final session of the third day. England crumbled to 164 all out to suffer their first-ever defeat by Bangladesh in 10 Tests and share the two-Test series 1-1. Bangladesh secure...

Brexit related attacks in UK: Uproar in Spain over videos

Uproar in Spain over videos of ‘Brexit-related attacks’ in UK Two videos of Spaniards being violently assaulted in separate incidents in the UK have gone viral in Spain, amid speculation the attacks could be linked to Brexit. The first video, from May, shows a British man hitting 27-year-old Tomás Gil, from Valencia, in the face with a wooden plank after shouting at him to “speak English”. It was released this month after the assailant was convicted of assault and bodily harm. The guilty verdict coincided with a second incident, in which a man was filmed punching 31-year-old Bangladeshi, Jubair Ahmed, in the face as he travelled through east London with his Spanish wife Kilian. Ms Ahmed is shown chasing down the attacker, who got off the train at Upton Park, and berating h...

BSF to deploy more floating outposts along Bangladesh border

In a bid to strengthen vigil along the riverine border with Bangladesh, Indian Border Security Force has decided to deploy six to seven floating border outposts (BOP) next year, reports Hindustan Times. Currently, there are three BOPs that keep surveillance in the Sundarbans. However, BSF has refused to divulge the number of BOPs that it is going to deploy, it said. In order to strengthen vigil, we are going to install more BOPs along our riverine border, HT reports quoting PSR Anjaneyulu, inspector general, BSF, South Bengal Frontier. The vigil along Bangladesh border has been increased after the infiltration of the eastern neighbour of India by IS elements, and especially since the massacre in Dhaka’s Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1 when 20 hostages (18 foreigners, two Ba...

Day break reveals devastating scenes as Britain’s oldest hotel

Day break has revealed devastating scenes at the site of the country's oldest hotel today after fire ripped through it yesterday leaving it a shell. More than 24 hours after the blaze broke out in a next door fine art gallery, more than 100 firefighters are still in attendance at the scene in Exeter, Devon. Reports are coming in this morning that a gas main has now ruptured underneath The Royal Clarence Hotel - and engineers are trying to isolate the point of the leak. Senior police officers have asked people to stay away from city centre unless absolutely necessary. It's clear though The Royal Clarence Hotel - which was built in 1769 and credited as the first hotel in England - has been utterly destroyed. Video shot on a police drone yesterday showed huge plumes of white ...

Cameron’s tax lock election pledge was cooked up on the hoof

David Cameron’s general election pledge of a law banning the Government from putting up income tax before 2020 was devised on the hoof, one of his advisers has said. Ameet Gill, who was responsible for events planning in No 10 under Mr Cameron, said the so-called five-year “tax lock” was “probably the dumbest economic policy” possible. He told BBC Radio 4’s Week In Westminster: “Sometimes when a vacuum is there, it makes the government do some stupid things. When I was in government, we made some announcements on the hoof just to fill that vacuum. Ameet Gill, left, was an advisor to David Cameron (Stefan Rousseau/PA) “Towards the end of the general election campaign in 2015, we did the five-year tax lock. It’s when we committed to put in legislation that we would not incre...

IS kills 232 and abducts 8,000 families near Mosul

It has been confirmed that the Islamic State killed 232 people near Mosul on Wednesday. Those killed included civilians as well as former Iraqi forces who refused to comply with orders. A UN spokesperson has said that the IS has abducted nearly 8,000 families or "tens of thousands" of people from around around the city. The civilians are understood to have been brought into Mosul and used as human shields nearby to military installations. Earlier in the week UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville spoke about information his officials were receiving which described IS "deliberately using civilians as human shields, forcing them to move to sites where ISIL (another name for IS) fighters are based, or preventing them from leaving other places for strategic reasons". Islami...
