The German parliament has approved a new law about prostitutes trade

German politicians have approved a law making it illegal to have sex with prostitutes without using a condom, among other regulations on the sex trade. Brothel owners will be obligated to draw customers attention to the law and advertising unprotected sex will be banned. The new law aims to tighten regulation of prostitution in Germany, which has been legal since 2002 but marred by continuing human trafficking, abuse and stigmitisation. It makes licensing mandatory for all brothels to ensure they comply with minimum legal standards, hygiene and health and safety regulations. Anyone attempting to open a commercial premises for prostitution will undergo checks attempting to crack down on the involvement of gangs, traffickers and criminals. Prostitutes must also register with...

Labour leader confounds critics again with victory over Owen Smith after Jeremy Corbyn wins

Jeremy Corbyn has confounded his critics by winning a Labour leadership contest for the second time in two years. His victory, announced in Liverpool, was broadly expected following a exhausting contest that has tested Labour's unity to its absolute limits. But the result, greeted with cheers of jubilation from his supporters, now leaves Mr Corbyn with a huge choice over whether to use his mandate to stamp his authority on the party's direction or strike a more conciliatory tone. His approach could become clear later this afternoon when he is due to attend a meeting of Labour's ruling National Executive Committee, where MPs have tabled plans to give the parliamentary party more say in selecting his team of shadow ministers. Mr Corbyn has said he will try to build a new rel...

Four women shot dead in Washington

Four women were shot dead and a man wounded during a shooting at a shopping centre in the US state of Washington where authorities were searching for the gunman, several media outlets have reported. The shootings occurred at about 7pm local time at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Washington, about 105km north of Seattle. Washington State Patrol spokesman Mark Francis said on Twitter that police were actively searching for the shooter, who was described as a "Hispanic male wearing gray" and last seen walking toward a nearby highway away from the mall. "Tragedy has struck in Washington tonight. Our hearts are in Burlington," Governor Jay Inslee said on Twitter. A local CBS affiliate reported that a nearby high school football game was evacuated as a precaution. The shooting ...

Migrants arrested in the back of a lorry on M1 motorway

Sixteen people have been arrested after police received reports of migrants in the back of a lorry on the M1. Hertfordshire Police were called at 2.55pm as the vehicle headed north towards Bedfordshire. The lorry was stopped just past junction 11. Some of the migrants were taken to hospital before being taken into police custody. Police said none of those arrested are thought to be seriously unwell. The case will now be handed to the UK Border Agency. Sky Correspondent David Bowden said it was not yet clear how the presence of the migrants in the lorry became known. He added: "If they are refugees then what tends to happen is as soon as they get onto UK soil, they jump out of whatever vehicle they're in, give themselves up and claim asylum. "If they don't do that, if they'...

As India mulls response to Uri attack: State of economy

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi of Indian government has vowed to respond. And this time too, the macroeconomic indicators are good. Soon after the terrorist attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001, Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government decided to mobilise troops on the border and along the LoC in the face of strident demands to carry out a strike against Pakistan. The movement of troops and armaments was known as Operation Parakaram (Strength or Prowess). A political decision had been taken to respond to the attack militarily and diplomatically, and Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha had to issue instructions to release funds at a difficult time — there was a deceleration in the global economy, India was facing one of its worst droughts ever, and the 9/11 attacks had plunged ...

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un launch missile: Why He Misunderstood the West

A man watches file footage of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at a missile launch, at Incheon airport in South Korea, on August 24. Flooding has killed more than 130 people in the northeast of North Korea. Editor’s note: The opinions in this article are the author’s, as published by our content partner, and do not represent the views of MSN or Microsoft. This article was originally published in The Conversation. North Korea essentially has two international images: the bellicose nuclear provocateur run by a mad dictator, and the impoverished country in dire need of humanitarian aid. At the moment, both faces are on depressing display. North Korea recently conducted its fifth nuclear test. As on previous occasions, talk of how to resolve the nuclear crisis ensued, with deba...

PM May to decide over Brexit talks after Boris begins setting out strategy, No 10 Downing street says

Theresa May alone will decide the terms of Britain’s departure from the EU, Downing Street has said after Boris Johnson began setting out a strategy for Brexit. Speaking in the United States, the Foreign Secretary on Thursday said that the UK will begin formal Brexit talks “early next year” and leave the EU by 2019. In comments that will delight Conservative Eurosceptics, he said that the discussions could be wrapped up before the two-year deadline and that Britain will be able to control its borders and do a “jumbo free trade deal”. He also suggested that countries like Australia could send more migrants to the UK in return for signing trade deals. And he said that it is “absolute baloney” to suggest that Britain will be unable to retain access to the European single mark...

Netanyahu invites Abbas to speak at Knesset in UN speech

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invited Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to come “speak to the Israeli people at the Knesset in Jerusalem,” during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, In return, he offered to “gladly come to speak peace with the Palestinian parliament in Ramallah.” “The road to peace runs through Jerusalem and Ramallah, not New York,” Netanyahu said. In reiterating his persistent call for direct negotiations with the Palestinians, Netanyahu rejected any possible United Nations plan to unilaterally impose a solution to the conflict. “We will not accept any attempt by the UN to dictate terms to Israel,” Netanyahu said. “I call on President Abbas: you have a choice to make. You can continue to stoke hatred ...

Home Minister Amber Rudd’s Leaks reveal whether she involvement in Bahamas offshore firms

Amber Rudd’s business career has come under scrutiny following a Guardian investigation that reveals her involvement with two companies in an offshore tax haven, and another where her co-director was jailed for fraud. A fresh leak of tax haven data names the home secretary as having been a director of two companies in the Bahamas – a fact she did not refer to earlier this year when defending David Cameron over his father’s investment fund in the same country. The Guardian has also discovered new details about her previous career in venture capital during the boom and bust 1990s. One enterprise led her to become a co-director of Monticello, a company that was at the centre of a share ramping investigation. She was also involved in a company prospecting for diamonds in Siber...

Trump and the Jews

Hatred of Jews, which has never run deep in American society, nevertheless has its adherents. The first is that Trump is no antisemite. Despite claims by people like Democratic National Committee chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz that antisemitism in the Republic Party “goes straight to the feet of Donald Trump;” despite Trump’s controversial statements; and despite the support he receives from people like antisemite and white power supremacist David Duke, the presidential hopeful is a philosemite who has had intimate relations with Jews throughout his life. If anything, he sees Jews as a group of smart, successful and generally powerful deal-makers – traits which he himself seeks to emulate. The second conclusion is that Trump can potentially do more to distance hi...
