Russia could attack Europe

Europe could be at risk A former NATO chief has warned Europe could be at the mercy of an imminent attack from Russia with no defence plans to repel an invasion. General Sir Richard Barrons claimed Russia could deploy warplanes, ships and troops on European soil within 48 hours if it desired, with NATO some months away from an effective counter-strike. The former chief of Joint Forces Command warned that the failure of countries such as France, Germany and Italy to take the threat of Russian aggression seriously could lead to a loss of land, sea and airspace. Countries bordering the country, led by president Vladimir Putin, are concerned about the threat from their neighbour, not a priority for southern and central states. The majority of the EU bloc is focussed on the hei...

Brexit Issue: Banks can cope with loss of EU passports

The City of London will be able to cope with the loss of banks passporting rights if Britain leaves the EU’s single market, according to an influential credit rating agency, assuaging fears that the UK’s financial services sector will be crippled by Brexit. EU passports allow lenders and other financial companies to operate across the 28-nation bloc without having to secure approval for access to each country individually. Opponents of Brexit have argued that losing passporting rights would deal a heavy blow to London’s status as a global financial centre that gives banks around the world access to the EU. However, in a boost to the City, analysts at Moody’s Investors Service have largely dismissed concerns that London would be unable to withstand the consequences of the U...

Ahmad Khan Rahami Suspect Charged With Attempted Murder of Cops in NY Bombings

Ahmad Khan Rahami, earlier named a person of interest in the weekend explosions in New York City and New Jersey, has been charged with five counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. He is also charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Rahami was taken into custody and hospitalized this morning after a shootout with police in Linden, New Jersey, the Union County acting prosecutor said today. He has been "directly linked" to the devices used in the New York and New Jersey explosions on Saturday, FBI official Bill Sweeney said. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said this afternoon there is "every reason to believe this was an act of terror." But there is "no indication that ther...

Refugees and migrants housands flee migrant camp after deliberate fire

Refugees and migrants stand at the closed gate of the Moria migrant camp, after a fire at the facility, on the island of Lesbos, Greece, September 19, 2016 Up to 4,000 people have fled one of the main migrant camps on the Greek island of Lesbos after a large fire broke out. Police said there was "no doubt" it was lit deliberately by some of those inside the Moria facility and the blaze was getting worse because winds were fanning the flames. No one was believed to have been injured in the fire which damaged tents and housing units. But among those who had to evacuate the camp were 150 youngsters who were moved to a children's village on Lesbos. Some 5,400 migrants and refugees live on Lesbos - the main destination for over a million people who made it to Greece's eastern i...

German elections AfD surge at expense of Angela Merkel

The politician has served as the chancellor of Germany since 2005 and as the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 2000. Here’s a look back at the life of the first female chancellor of the country. The Christian Democrats (CDU) polled just 17.5 per cent of the vote, a major blow to Ms Merkel's party and an indication of the uphill battle the party will have at the national elections in Germany in October 2017. Top candidate of the anti-immigration party Alternative for Germany (AfD) Georg Pazderski casts his vote. The far-right, openly anti-Muslim AfD party has made significant gains in Germany's local elections as Angela Merkel's Christian Democrat party slumped to its worst ever result. Alternative for Germany won 11.5 per cent of the vote, just three d...

London losing status as global financial hub after Brexit

London's position as a financial hub will be dealt a severe blow if the UK left the single market, the head of Germany's central bank has warned. Jens Weidmann, president of Deutsche Bundesbank, warned that the “hard Brexit” scenario, favoured by conservative eurosceptics behind the ‘Leave Means Leave' campaign, would mean that Britain would be stripped of the right to authorise banks and finance companies to operate across the remaining 27 European Union nations. He added that it would also allow Frankfurt to take business away from London. “Passporting rights are tied to the single market and would automatically cease to apply if Great Britain is no longer at least part of the European Economic Area (EEA),” he said in a meeting with a host of European media outlets inclu...

Europe will make Brexit very painful for the UK

Slovakia's Prime Minister has claimed Europe will make sure leaving the European Union is very painful for the UK. Robert Fico said Britain would not be allowed to make EU workers second-class citizens while still receiving the benefits of the single market. He told Financial Times: It will be very difficult for the UK, very difficult. The EU will take this opportunity to show the public: ‘listen guys, now you will see why it is important to stay in the EU’. This will be the position. Mr Fico stressed he had personal respect for Theresa May but said he did not envy her dilemma. He added: What would you say if you were in their position? Even if it is the fifth-biggest economy in the world  I understand their financial importance  this will still be very painful for the UK....

PM May urges new approach to migrant crisis

Theresa May will criticise the West's response to the migration crisis when she addresses world leaders later. At a UN summit in New York, she will call for a greater distinction between refugees and people trying to enter a country for economic reasons. The PM will also say refugees should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach and stress that nations have a right to control their borders. The UN says a record number of people have been displaced by conflict. It estimates that 65.3m people were either refugees, asylum seekers or internally displaced at the end of 2015, an increase of 5m in a year. The UN summit for refugees and migrants is aiming to agree a more humane and coordinated approach. Mrs May will warn unprecedented levels of population movement risks...

Burakini ban again heated debate in France

Channel 7 Image caption Sydney medical student Zeynab Alshelh wanted to show solidarity with Muslim women in France A Muslim woman from Australia has told how she was forced to leave a beach in France for wearing a burkini. Zeynab Alshelh, a 23-year-old medical student, told Australian media she had travelled to Europe to show solidarity with local Muslim women. Footage broadcast on Channel 7 showed local people saying they would call the police if she didn't leave. The ban on burkinis in several French Riviera towns was overruled in August by the top administrative court. Local mayors who brought in the laws said the full- body swimsuits were a symbol of Islam and potentially provocative after the July terror atrocity in Nice. Ms Alshelh said she and her family travelled ...

Police Investigating launched over video of policeman attacking (video)

An investigation has been launched over footage apparently showing a car windscreen being smashed by a policeman after the driver refuses to get out. The clip, shared on social media on Saturday and viewed around 50,000 times, shows what appears to be a police officer - filmed from the position of the driver - repeatedly telling him to “get out of the car”, adding: “You're not allowed to drive it.” No arrests were made during the incident on 16 September. Video footage apparently shows an officer using what looks like a baton to hit at the car windows of a car with the driver still inside and then saw through the glass with a blade. A police spokesperson said they were still working to “get to the bottom” of the incident. The officers involved are still on their normal dut...
