Help find these missing blood types: Become a blood donor today and help save lives

NHSBT Blood donation services around the world have launched an international push for more people to give blood amid falling numbers of new donors. NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), the national blood service for England, is uniting with other blood donor organisations and calling on citizens in 21 countries across the world to become new blood donors and save lives. Globally, three blood transfusions are given every second, but there has been nearly a 30% drop internationally in people becoming blood donors compared to a decade ago. According to Ian Trenholm, chief executive of NHSBT: We’re particularly interested in encouraging more young people and those from black and South Asian communities to come forward to make sure we’ve got a broad range of blood types, he s...

North Korea Diplomat In London Defects To South

North Korea's deputy ambassador in London has defected to the South, according to officials in Seoul. Thae Yong Ho has apparently arrived with his family in Seoul, making him the highest-ranking diplomat ever to defect to the South. He defected due to discontent with the regime and for the future of his child, the South's Unification Ministry said. Jeong Joon-Hee, spokesman at the ministry, told a news conference: "They are currently under government protection and relevant institutions are going ahead with necessary procedures as usual." Mr Jeong declined to give details on the timing of Mr Thae's arrival or his itinerary. Defections are a source of bitter contention between the rival Koreas, and South Korea does not always make high-profile cases public. Pyongyang often ...

Action if agencies take money for jobs in Malaysia

Legal action will be taken against the recruiting agencies which took money from people in the name of giving jobs in Malaysia as the country is yet to open its doors for foreign workers, the expatriates' welfare and overseas employment minister said today. “We are in the dark about Malaysia as the manpower market there has not opened yet, and we don’t know when it will open,” the minister said. The minister also advised people not to give money to any recruiting agencies for getting jobs in Malaysia. The minister said this while replying to queries at a press briefing at Probashi Kallyan Bhaban in Dhaka. The briefing was organised on the minister’s trip from August 6 and 14 to Jordan and Lebanon where he went to see the situation of Bangladeshis living there. On February ...

Donald Trump Proposes Extreme Vetting for Immigrants with Ideological Screening Test

To fight radical Islamic terrorism” and to make America safe again, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump proposed today administering a new, ideological test for immigrants who want to enter the United States. We should only admit into this country those who share our values and respect our people, Trump said at a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio. “The time is overdue to develop a new screening test for the threats we face today. I call it extreme vetting, Trump said. Trump Forges Ahead After Difficult Week Trump’s policy proposal is an expansion on his call in December for a “total and complete shutdown” of Muslims’ entering the United States. “In addition to screening out all members of the sympathizers of terrorist groups, we must also screen out any who h...

The Tube line with the worst crime rate revealed

British Transport Police recorded 1,961 combined violent and sex crimes on the Tube and DLR in the first six months of the year. That compares with 1,389 crimes for the first six months of 2015 - an increase of 41 per cent. Most violent or sexual crimes were reported on the Central Line, which saw 314 such crimes overall between 1 January and 30 June. The most violent incidents occurred on the Jubilee Line, with 241, while the Central Line saw the most sex offences with 88. Authorities suggest that an increase in the number of people using the Tube (more than 11 million every day) will be a factor. BTP also said a rise in the number of sexual offences had been expected following the launch of 'report it to stop it' in April last year , which was a campaign to tackle sexual...

Bangha Bahadur dies

The wild elephant, Bangabahadur, whose journey from India to Bangladesh was widely chronicled, died in Jamalpur this morning. He suffered a heart attack and breathed his last at Koyra village in Sharishabari upazila around 6:30am, said Mustafizur Rahman, assistant veterinary surgeon of Bangabandhu Safari Park, Cox’s Bazar. “There were multiple factors behind the heart attack. Stress, severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance were the main factors,” our Jamalapur correspondent reports quoting Mustafizur. The elephant got separated from his herd in Assam and came to Bangladesh through Kurigram's Chilmari upazila floating with the currents of Brahmaputra on June 27. The stranded wild elephant, who was recently rescued and named as Bangabahadur, is being tied after he was t...

A perfect example of how UK tax law is biased against ordinary people

Hugh Grosvenor, the 25-year-old who inherited a £9 billion fortune last week on the death of the Duke of Westminster, will likely not pay any inheritance tax, according to The Guardian. Normally, large inheritances are subject to a 40% tax. But the vast Grosvenor property portfolio — including 300 acres of Mayfair and Belgravia in central London — will pass in the form of a trust, which is subject to a 6% tax payment every 10 years instead. To give you an idea of just how much tax the new Duke of Westminster isn't paying, consider that the entire take of the inheritance tax last year was £4.7 billion. Had Grosvenor been taxed at the 40% rate, it would have put £3.6 billion in the public coffers. Those of us who pay between 20% and 40% income tax every month have another re...

Russian bombers deployed to Iran for missions in Syria

Russian Tupolev-22 bombers were deployed to a military air base in Iran as part of the first operational collaboration between the two countries. Russia and Iran both hope that having the bombers closer to Syria will increase the effectiveness of the missions. Media outlets in Russia reported this morning (Tuesday) that the Russian Air Force deployed Tupolev-22 bombers to Iran. According to the Russian news agency TASS, the aircraft have already taken off from the Iranian city of Hamadan in order to carry out missions against ISIS and the rebel forces in Syria. Initially, the reports from Russia did not specify how many aircraft were sent to Iran and official conformation about the reports was not granted. Only after the first mission was complete, the Russian Defense Mini...

UK Supreme Court case will provide a clear legal path to block Article 50 and stop Brexit

A lawsuit brought by a hairdresser, an investment firm manager and a handful of other plaintiffs that demands Parliament hold a vote on whether to trigger Article 50 will be heard by the UK Supreme Court, according to Bloomberg. The case is crucial because it sets out a legal path that could allow the House of Commons to ignore the result of the EU referendum. The plaintiffs argue that an Article 50 request to leave the EU can only be triggered by a vote in Parliament, not the mere request of the prime minister. If the Supreme Court agrees, then the Article 50 request would be put to the House of Commons. It is not certain that Article 50 would get enough votes. As this chart from Morgan Stanley show, a large majority of MPs favour Remain. Many of them are likely to vote a...

Supermarket sales fall below £100bn in price war

The major grocers’ revenues dropped by 3.1pc to £99bn in the last quarter, according to the latest figures from the Share Centre. Sales across the whole of the FTSE 350 also fell by 2.2pc to £341.7bn in the last three months. However, while British companies sales are falling, it is expected that the slump in the pound will improve profits as around 40pc of British listed companies’ sales are declared in US dollars. Companies with large overseas operations and exporters such as Vodafone, SAB Miller and Kingfisher will also benefit from sterling’s depreciation. British company profits are also on the rise as a wave of multi-billion writedowns come to an end. Food retailers are fighting against deflation Around £89.7bn was written down in the last quarter, the lowest level s...
