Medina explosion: Suicide bombing near Saudi holy site

A suicide bomber has killed four security officers and injured five others near one of Islam's holiest sites in the Saudi city of Medina, according to the interior ministry. The bomber detonated his explosives after being stopped outside the Prophet's Mosque, a statement said. The mosque is the burial place of the Prophet Muhammad and Medina the second-holiest city in Islam after Mecca. Suicide blasts also struck two other Saudi cities on Monday. That an attack happened in Medina at such a place is likely to leave Muslims around the world aghast, BBC World Service's Middle East editor, Alan Johnston, says. Suspicion is likely to fall on so-called Islamic State (IS), he adds.Al-Arabiya gave a different account of the incident, saying the bomber had targeted the security off...

French plot to topple City of London is foolish bluster

The plans conflict with far more important economic and strategic objectives of the EU, and some of the stated intentions violate existing EU law. France is rolling out the red carpet for putative refugees from Canary Wharf, hoping to capture the lion’s share of the estimated €600bn to €1 trillion market for clearing in euro-denominated transactions. Some German officials are also eyeing the City, but more discreetly. "There is a power play going on. It is very clear France and Germany will do everything they can to damage the City and get the business for themselves," said Professor Athanasios Orphanides, a former member of the European Central Bank's governing council. "But I don't think anybody can kill the City that easily. The EU itself is so messed up right now and t...

Islamic State is our top enemy: Saudi Grand Mufti

Saudi Arabia's highest religious authority has condemned the armed groups Islamic State and al-Qaeda as apostates and labelled them the "number one enemy of Islam". The country's grand mufti, Abdulaziz al-Sheikh, said on Tuesday that terrorism, which he accuses the groups of committing on a systematic scale, had no place in Islam's ideology. "Extremist and militant ideas and terrorism which spread decay on Earth, destroying human civilisation, are not in any way part of Islam, but are enemy number one of Islam, and Muslims are their first victims," he said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency. The Saudi government has been a main supporter of rebels battling Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, but has funnelled arms and money away from Islamic State and ...

Homemade bomb that sounded like a cannon blows off student’s foot in Central Park

A college student stepped on a “homemade” bomb in Central Park Sunday, blowing off his left foot, authorities said. Connor Golden, 18, of Fairfax, Va. had just climbed down off of a rock near E. 60th St. and Fifth Ave. around 11 a.m. when the blast went off. The explosive appeared to have been in the area more than a day, according to Lt. Mark Torre, the commanding officer of the NYPD’s Bomb Squad said. He ruled out authorities’ initial suspicion of a self-inflicted fireworks mishap. Two friends of the victim, Connor Golden, 18, of Fairfax, Va., insisted they had no fireworks or other explosives. One witnesses said the victim’s foot was “all but gone.” Another said the blast sounded “like a cannon.” Bomb-sniffing dogs combed the area around the explosion. Cops also examine...

Militants followed IS recruiters, controversial preacher

Sharier Khan: Two of the five young militants who have slaughtered 20 innocent people Friday night at Holey Artisan Bakery used to follow three controversial Islamists -- Anjem Choudary, Shami Witness and Zakir Nayek. Militant killer Nibras Islam, 22, used to follow two alleged suspected recruiters of Islamic State -- Anjem Choudary and Shami Witness -- on Twitter in 2014. Another killer Rohan Imtiaz, son of an Awami League leader, propagated on Facebook last year quoting Peace TV’s controversial preacher Zakir Nayek “urging all Muslims to be terrorists”. A Pakistan-origin British citizen, 49-year-old Anjem is now facing trial in England for breaking the British anti-terrorism law. Shami Witness is the Twitter name of 24-year-old Mehdi Biswas of Bangalore in India, who is also facing trial...

Theresa May refuses to rule out deportation of EU nationals living in UK amid fears of influx of migrants

Theresa May has refused to rule out the deportation of EU nationals living in Britain after the country leaves the European Union, amid fears that guaranteeing their rights at this stage could lead to a “huge influx” of migrants during the Brexit negotiation phase. It comes as the Home Secretary, who has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the race to succeed David Cameron as Conservative leader, said today that although she wanted to “guarantee the position” of EU citizens currently living in the UK she admitted their future could be up for negotiation. A source close to Ms May told The Independent: “She [Ms May] was saying it’s unwise to promise right now that all EU nationals living in Britain should be able to stay indefinitely. The reason for that is if we did that th...

Putin Remains Dumb as Europe Crumbles in the West

Brexit will have some good consequences and some bad consequences, Russian president Vladimir Putin said in the immediate aftermath of the British vote. The president sounded restrained and impartial, leaving to lesser players the chance to cheer in public. “The European Union was like a beacon of light: If you were not in the EU it meant something was wrong with you,” Konstantin Kosachev, head of the International Relations Committee of the Federation Council said during a Channel One talk-show on Tuesday. “But what can possibly be wrong with Great Britain?” Kosachev posed the rhetorical question to imply that the U.K., integrated in every institution of the West, was an unlikely candidate to undermine the European Union. “Nothing is wrong with us, something is wrong with...

UK hotspots targeted in bid to calm post Brexit tension

A nationwide strategy to calm community tensions and challenge the post-referendum surge in racism will be launched on Monday amid fears that an emboldened far right could provoke rising racial conflict in the wake of the Brexit vote. The anti-fascist organisation Hope Not Hate will unveil an initiative involving more than 100 unity meetings in identified racist “hotspot” communities, the start of a summer-long campaign to tackle intolerance that has seen reported hate crimes soar during the past week. The #moreincommon initiative – partly funded by the Jo Cox campaign, which has raised almost £1.5m from nearly 44,000 donations since the MP was murdered shortly before the referendum – coincides with evidence that rightwing extremists feel legitimised by the Vote Leave vic...

Italy struck but not broken

Italy is down but not out, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said in response to the Gulshan cafe attack that left nine Italian nationals among 20 dead. “Confronted with the madness of those who want to undo the Italian way of life, Italians have been struck but not broken,” Renzi said late Saturday, reports Politico, an Italian newspaper. Earlier that day, six gunmen stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery in the diplomatic quarter of Dhaka and took hostages, mostly foreign nationals. Thirteen people were freed, but 20 were killed, including nine Italians, seven Japanese, one American and one Indian. Islamic State allegedly claimed responsibility for the attack. It’s the latest in a series of terrorist attacks around the world, Renzi said, mentioning the two Italians who we...

Nation mourning for slain Gulshan hostages

The nation on Sunday started observing the two-day mourning in commemoration of those killed during the hostage standoff at a café at the city’s Gulshan after it came under a terror attack on Friday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday made the declaration for observing the two-day national mourning in her televised address to the nation in the wake of the grisly attack on the Spanish eatery in the country’s diplomatic zone, reports unb. Security forces on Saturday recovered the bodies of 20 foreign nationals launching a commando operation at the restaurant when six attackers and two policemen were also killed after terrorists held hostage a good number of people in it. Thirteen people, including a Japanese citizen and two Sri Lankan nationals, were rescued during the...
