Victoria train station evacuated after unexploded World War Two bomb found on building site

Thousands were evacuated from Victoria station during rush hour this morning following reports or an unexploded bomb. Armed police raced to the scene as hordes of commuters were ordered from both the tube and mainline rail station. Pictures and videos on social media showed people flooding from the the station with a heavy police presence outside. Scotland Yard ordered the station evacuated due to an "unexploded device" on a nearby building site. Buckingham Palace Road was partially closed and cordoned off. The Met tweeted: "Officers are in attendance at a building site on Terminus Place, SW1 following the discovery of what is believed to be World War 2 ordnance." Julian Assange accuses UK minister of insulting UN after detention finding

Julian Assange has accused Britain’s foreign secretary, Philip Hammond, of insulting the United Nations in his response to a panel finding that Assange’s circumstances amount to “arbitrary detention”. Hammond called the panel’s finding “ridiculous” and said the Wikileaks founder was a “fugitive from justice”. Assange said the remarks were “beneath the stature that a foreign minister should express in this situation”. Assange said of the panel’s finding: “This is the end of the road for the legal arguments that have been put forward by Sweden and the UK.” Appearing at a west London press conference by videolink from the Ecuadorian embassy, where he has remained since seeking asylum in 2012, Assange said that if Sweden and the UK continued to dispute the report, “the diploma...

Is it healthy to only eat potatoes for an entire year? A man from Australia is testing this out

An Australian man has pledged to only eat potatoes for the entirety of 2016 in an attempt to cure his binge-eating. Father-of-two Andrew Flinders Taylor, from Melbourne, said he made the decision after reaching his heaviest ever weight of 23 stone 12lbs. After only a 34 days of the diet, he has lost over two stone and says he is sleeping better as a result. Mr Taylor took on the challenge after studying scientific papers and finalising a plan with the help of a doctor and a dietician. He says he was surprised to find that potatoes offer "more than enough protein" along with all essential amino acids. Mr Taylor told The Independent: "I'm getting over 600% of my daily iron retirements and over 400% of vitamin c as well as heaps of fibre - all things that so-called experts h...

Osama bin Laden inspired to plan 9/11 terror attacks by Egypt Air flight 990 crash, al-Qaeda claims

Osama bin Laden Osama bin Laden planned the September 11 attacks after being “inspired” by a chance discussion about a plane crash in the US, al-Qaeda propaganda has claimed. In its weekly al-Masrā newspaper, Ansar al-Sharia released an article claiming to tell the “untold story” behind the 2001 plot that killed almost 3,000 people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. Just under two years before, Egypt Air Flight 990 had crashed into the Atlantic Ocean during its journey from Los Angeles to Cairo, killing all 217 people on board – almost half of them Americans. Egyptian investigators insisted mechanical failure was the cause but the US National Transportation Safety Board found that co-pilot Gameel Al-Batouti had deliberately downed the plane, continua...

Valencia’s Gary Neville refuses to resign after thrashing by Barcelona

Gary Neville insisted that he had no intention of resigning as Valencia manager after his side was hammered 7-0 at the Camp Nou by Barcelona on Wednesday night but the club’s sporting director Suso García Pitarch described it as one of the worst results in our history and evaded questions about the Englishman’s future at the Mestalla. Valencia are not expected to take a drastic decision. Neville was asked three times if he was thinking of resigning after four goals from Luis Suárez and three from Lionel Messi saw his side fall to a semi-final first leg defeat in the Copa del Rey. He gave a one-word response to the first question, replying simply: no. When the issue was raised again, with Neville asked if he would understand it if he was sacked, he responded: next question....

Two murder suspects remain on the run after a company boss was shot dead during an attempted armed robbery in which his business was specifically targeted. Akhtar Javeed was found fatally wounded in the street following the shooting at Direct Source 3 Ltd in the Digbeth area of Birmingham, West Midlands Police said. The 56-year-old was the director at the soft drinks distributor, and died in hospital shortly after police were called to the scene by someone inside the warehouse in Rea Street South at 6.40pm on Wednesday. The suspects, who were said to have been two masked men, remain at large and are believed to have used a getaway vehicle. Taliban Gun Down 10 Years Old Militia Hero in Afghanistan

The Afghan government declared Wasil Ahmad a hero for leading a militia’s defense against a Taliban siege last year, parading him in front of cameras in a borrowed police uniform too big for him. On Monday, the Taliban triumphantly announced that they had assassinated him with two bullets to the head. Wasil Ahmad was 10 years old. He was gunned down in Tirin Kot city, the capital of southern Oruzgan Province, just a few months after leaving militia life and enrolling in school as a fourth grader. Wasil’s story is a painful example of how child combatants continue to be a part of life in Afghanistan, both in the ranks of pro-government forces and among the Taliban insurgents. Rafiullah Baidar, a spokesman for the Afghan independent human rights commission, said that despite...

Irish general election to take place on 26 February

The Irish general election will take place on 26 February, the country’s prime minister, Enda Kenny, has said, as he dissolved the Dáil and kicked off one of the shortest election battles in Irish political history. Political scientists, election number crunchers and bookmakers are predicting that Kenny will make history by being returned as Taoiseach. If the experts and recent opinion polls are correct, Kenny will become the first ever Fine Gael Taoiseach to be elected for a second term since Ireland became independent from Britain in 1922. While the odds are in favour of Kenny becoming Taoiseach again and thus taking the salute at the military parade on Easter Sunday to mark the 100th anniversary of the Rising in Dublin against British rule, opinion polls indicate his pa...

Pensioner bleeds to death during operation after spelling mistake on blood supply

Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, north-west London A pensioner bled to death after a spelling mistake meant blood intended for her during an operation was sent back. Irmgard Cooper, 85, died at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, north-west London, as blood supplies were severely delayed. An inquest at North London Coroner's Court heard that her name had been spelt as Irngard instead of Irmgard, which resulted in the delay. In addition, the surgeon had not been told no blood supplies were available during the operation until he was carrying out the procedure on May 7 last year. By the time replacement supplies arrived, Mrs Cooper, who lived in Hayling Island, Hampshire, had lost all her blood and she died on the operating table, the Brent and Kilburn Times reported. The G...
