Reporter Gets Stabbed While Testing Stab Proof Vest

Eitam Lachover was filming a segment about a company designing the vests when he decided to be part of the demonstration. The Channel 1 reporter had agreed to test the hardware, to prove the importance of the gear, but ended up injured. In a statement to Israeli paper The Globes, the company said Lachover suffered the injury only because he “moved” during the take. “The knife did not penetrate the vest. The reporter moved during the demonstration, and the stabber missed the vest. The reporter was stabbed slightly above the vest,” the company said. Lachover only suffered a light injury to his upper back after the accident and the manufacturers are still are confident the item is safe. He later said on Twitter that he got stitches and was discharged from the hospital. An ear...

Man with knife shot dead at Paris police station

Police officers secure the perimeter near the scene of a fatal shooting which took place at a police station in Paris, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2016. French officials say a man armed with a knife was shot to death by officers… PARIS — Officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man with wires protruding from his clothes at a police station in northern Paris on Thursday, French officials said, a year to the day after an attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo launched a bloody year in the French capital. Luc Poignant, a police union official, said the man cried out "Allahu akbar," Arabic for "God is great." Just a few minutes earlier, elsewhere in the city, French President Francois Hollande had finished paying homage to police officers killed in the line of duty, in...

Arctic Blast To Herald Return Of Winter Weather

Widespread Frost As The UK Braces Itself For Severe Cold Weather There is a big change on the way for Britain's weather, which has seen exceptionally mild conditions recently. Next week, a north to north-westerly flow will develop taking Arctic air across the UK, making it feel much colder than recently and more like winter. From next Wednesday, daytime temperatures will fall to below the seasonal average, ranging from freezing in parts of the north to 5°C in the south. Overnight frosts can be expected, too, with the risk of ice and freezing fog. The change in temperature will also bring much drier conditions, with high pressure close to the UK. That will be welcome news to flood-hit communities, after December 2015 became the wettest ever month since records began in 1910...

Saudi-Iran tensions can’t stop the oil price crash as Brent reaches fresh 11 year low

Brent crude resumes sell-off as Iranians says oversupply, rather than a new Middle East war, is the biggest threat to prices. Brent crude has slumped to a fresh 11-year low as the world's record oil supply glut weighs on traders. The price of a barrel of the world's benchmark fell by more than 2pc to $35.66 in early trading on Wednesday, extending a third consecutive day of losses and hitting lows not seen since 2004. The sell-off resumed after escalating tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia - two of the world's biggest rival producers - saw Brent spike briefly in Monday trading. But traders shrugged off the prospect of a new bout of geopolitical risk in the Middle East. West Texas Intermediate - the US benchmark - also declined 1.5pc to $35.44. An Iranian official from ...

Britain condemns North Korea hydrogen bomb test claim

A hydrogen bomb test which North Korea claimed it has conducted is a "provocation" and a "grave breach" of UN Security Council resolutions, Philip Hammond said. The Foreign Secretary said he condemns without reservation the move, which the country announced in a state broadcast. An announcer described the test, the first since 2013, as a "perfect success". Mr Hammond, who is currently on an official visit to China, tweeted: "If North Korean H-bomb test reports are true, it is a grave breach of UNSC resolutions & a provocation which I condemn without reservation." The news of the "miniaturised" hydrogen bomb test was unexpected, as no mention has been made in leader Kim Jong Un's New Year speech. The US Geological Survey measured an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 - ...

IS Bomb Skills Truly The Stuff Of Nightmares

At first, the images didn't look very different from the raft of other ISIS propaganda on the internet, but within minutes, it occurred to me that this was definitely no ISIS propaganda video. The trademark flag-waving masked gunmen I'd expected to see were replaced with clean-shaven, technically adept and highly trained weapons specialists giving expert tuition in how to turn obsolete munitions and ammunition into state of the art weapon systems. Without doubt, the most chilling aspect of watching this training video was the unprecedented levels of technical expertise and ingenuity of those weapons engineers. During my career I have pitted my wits against some of the world's most prolific bomb-makers. I personally began fighting against the IRA's bombmakers in 1999 - duri...

Mass Sexual Attack in Germany Inflames Migrant Debate

German authorities said on Tuesday that coordinated attacks in which young women were sexually harassed and robbed by hundreds of young men on New Year’s Eve in the western city of Cologne were unprecedented in scale and nature. The assault, which went largely unreported for days, set off a national outcry after the Cologne police described the attackers as young men “who appeared to have a North African or Arabic” background, based on testimony from victims and witnesses. More than 90 people have filed legal complaints, the police said on Tuesday. Sign Up For NYT Now's Morning Briefing Newsletter The police in Hamburg also said that 10 women had reported being sexually assaulted and robbed in a similar fashion on the same night, and they urged witnesses to come forward. Seven million foreigners living in Britain as immigration rises by a fifth

The number of foreigners living in Britain has passed seven million for the first time after net immigration rose by a fifth. There was a 21 per cent increase in the net flow of migrants to the UK while the number of those leaving hit a six-year low. Residents born overseas account for one in eight people after hitting 7,040,000 last year, according to the Office for National Statistics. Some 239,000 more people moved here during 2010 than left, the fourth highest level on record, and a record one in four births were to foreign-born mothers. It is a major blow to David Cameron’s pledge to cut net immigration to the “tens of thousands” by 2015. But Damian Green, the immigration minister, blamed Labour’s “addiction” to immigration. Other figures yesterday showed that a recor...

Tories Zac Goldsmith accuses Labour’s Sadiq Khan of playing the race card in mayoral contest

Zac Goldsmith The Conservative candidate to become the next Mayor of London has accused Labour’s candidate of playing the race card during the political campaign. Zac Goldsmith, the MP for Richmond Park, defended earlier comments where he described Mr Khan as divisive and radical. Sources on the Khan campaign had described Mr Goldsmith’s messaging as a possible “coded racist attack” designed to refer to the Labour candidate’s Islamic faith. “I think he is playing with fire, I don't think there is anything more divisive than playing the race card when clearly, unambiguously that does not apply,” Mr Goldsmith told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. “It's very obvious what I was referring to when I described him as a 'radical candidate' as part of a radical process that has envel...

Why aren’t we calling the Oregon militia terrorists

As of Sunday afternoon, The Washington Post called them "occupiers" — and more precisely, "an armed militia." The New York Times opted for "armed activists" and "militia men." And the Associated Press put the situation this way: "A family previously involved in a showdown with the federal government has occupied a building at a national wildlife refuge in Oregon and is asking militia members to join them." Not one seemed to lean toward terms such as "insurrection," "revolt," anti-government "insurgents" or, as some on social media were calling them, "terrorists." When a group of unknown size and unknown firepower has taken over any federal building with plans and possibly some equipment to aid a years-long occupation — and when its representatives tells reporters that they...
