White Christmas forecast for parts of the UK as the Met Office predicts snow for December 25

With the festive season fast approaching, speculation over whether we could be getting a white Christmas this year has already begun - and it's looking like good news for snow-loving Brits. The Met Office said there is a chance of snow falling in the UK on December 25 in its latest predictions released this weekend. Weather models are still to be updated closer to the day but the latest outlook says "some snow" could be expected over high ground in the north. A statement posted online yesterday said: "High pressure is likely to dominate from mid December, with fairly 'blocked' conditions becoming established across the UK. "This weather pattern would lead to drier than average conditions and lighter winds. "Interludes of more unsettled weather are expected to be fairly lim...

The EU must compromise to win a good Brexit deal for Britain and the rest of the union, warns Polish PM

The EU must compromise to win a Brexit deal that works for both the UK and the rest of Europe, the Polish Prime Minister warns today ahead of a historic meeting with Theresa May. In an exclusive article for The Telegraph, Beata Szydlo praises the British-Polish alliance in fighting the Nazis and says that ongoing defence and security co-operation between the two countries is essential, and must be at the heart of any new deal. Poland ready to help its old friend Britain reach the best possible Brexit deal Ms Szydło said the result of negotiations will depend on "imagination and leadership" and called on the Prime Minister to set out her Brexit plan soon. Islamic State retreat reveals terror plots against Europe

Intelligence of attack plots across Europe is being uncovered as Islamic State’s caliphate is beaten back, the top British officer in the military coalition fighting the extremists has disclosed. A trove of information has already been found and the capture of the Iraqi city of Mosul is expected to deliver more on the plans, finances and members of Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (Isil). Maj Gen Rupert Jones warned there were “no quick answers” in the fight to liberate Iraq’s second city, which has now entered its second month. He also appeared to challenge Donald Trump’s campaign trail suggestions that the coalition was not aggressive enough against the extremist movement also known as Daesh. Maj Gen Jones, who is second in command of the US-led coalition, spoke as the T...

Pension age may be about to rise again, says former minister

The government may be preparing to increase the official state pension age to 70 for millions of people currently in their 20s, a former minister has claimed. Steve Webb said documents produced by the Department for Work and Pensions suggested a “more aggressive” timetable on state pension age (SPA) increases than previously planned was being prepared. The current official SPA for people in their 20s is 68, though under the existing schedule it could be expected to rise to 69. The SPA is the earliest age someone can start receiving their state pe...

Trump claims serious fraud, says millions voted illegally

President-elect Donald Trump made unsubstantiated claims Sunday of serious US voter fraud and said "millions of people" had cast their ballots illegally, offering no evidence for the assertions he put forth on Twitter. Trump's shock path to the White House saw him fall short of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the popular vote -- she carried the election by 2.2 million ballots -- but win the all-important Electoral College count, which decides the US presidency. The Republican billionaire's latest statements, in which he said he would have won the popular vote were it not for the "millions of people who voted illegally," came as steps are being taken towards recounting votes in the state of Wisconsin, which Trump won. Trump and his aides have pushed back hard agains...
