Tower Hamlets Council’s Cabinet has approved a new Community Engagement Strategy on Tuesday 30 January 2018.
The new strategy will ensure that the many diverse communities within the borough are at the very heart of the services offered by the council and can influence and shape the borough in which they live and work.
It also marks a more transparent, outwardly-facing approach to the council’s work, putting local people at the very heart of what is done by ensuring people are informed, engaged, involved with and empowered by the council.
The new strategy builds on existing good practices and aims to resolve, with partners, the challenges the borough will face in the coming years. It follows a period of consultation with a wide range of individuals and organisations within the borough in late 2017.
Four key outcomes are central to the agreed strategy. These are:
- Communities lead the way in making Tower Hamlets a great place to live.
- Communities have the power to influence issues that affect them.
- Activities to involve communities are focused and purposeful.
- Tower Hamlets is digitally active.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said:
“Our greatest assets in Tower Hamlets are our incredibly diverse range of people and the communities within it. This new strategy builds on how we have involved our communities and outlines what we will do to encourage more people to get involved in shaping their neighbourhood, council services and future of their borough.
“I am grateful for all of the input that the community has given to this new strategy. I look forward to leading this new approach, and meeting and working with more local people to identify priorities and develop solutions to the challenges we face.”
