Biden slams Trump over fraud claim

Joe Biden's campaign has launched a searing attack on Donald Trump after he pledged to contest the election in the courts. In a subdued and seemingly unscripted speech this morning the US President claimed with no evidence that a very sad group of people is trying to disenfranchise his voters. He then went on to claim he had won the election, despite many states not declaring their results, and said he would go to the Supreme Court to get all voting to stop. Millions of ballots which were legally cast before the election deadline passed have yet to be counted and could prove crucial in determining who has won the race. This morning Biden's campaign said it has legal teams standing by if Trump follows through with his threat to go to court to try to stop the counti...

What the US election result could mean for UK

It goes without saying that a change of administration in Washington would have far-reaching consequences across the world. But what will the impact of the US election result be on the UK's Brexit project? Donald Trump has called himself "Mr Brexit" and has aligned himself politically with figures like Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson. In many respects the prime minister could not hope for a more sympathetic ally in the White House than the one he currently has. Joe Biden's instincts are in many respects the opposite: and he's already shown himself capable of intervening to criticise the UK over its relationship with Europe. Last month month he took time out of the presidential election campaign to admonish Boris Johnson over the internal market bill. The Democratic ...

New grant for self-employed, announced by the government

Boris Johnson has announced the government will double the level of financial support for self-employed workers in November during the second coronavirus lockdown in England. Faced with mounting pressure to help millions of workers before new measures are imposed on Thursday, the prime minister said the self-employment income support scheme (SEISS) would be increased from 40% of average profits to 80% in November. People who work for themselves will be able to apply from the end of the month rather than the middle of December as initially planned to help provide support faster during the second lockdown in England. Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, confirmed that the increase would be to an average of 55% of trading profits over the wider period from November to January...

The states Trump, Biden need to win to take White House

US voters are heading to the polls on Tuesday as the presidential election race nears the finishing line. The winner of the hard-fought contest between Donald Trump and Joe Biden is unlikely to be declared on the night, owing to the high number of Americans voting via postal ballots as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. But we could get a good indication of who is going to take the White House if a number of key states are won with a large enough margin. Here are the key battleground states to keep an eye on. Electoral maths In order to win the keys to the Oval Office, Democratic candidate Biden needs to secure 38 electoral votes more than the 232 that Hillary Clinton won in 2016. The states below have a combined total of 70 electoral votes and were all taken...

PM addresses MPs over ban

A furious Tory MP has attacked Boris Johnson over plans for a second national lockdown, accusing the Prime Minister of creating an "authoritative and coercive state". Mr Johnson is in the Commons this afternoon attempting to head off a fierce Tory rebellion over the impending measures, which are scheduled to come into force on Thursday. The Prime Minister insisted the plans were “time limited” and he hoped to lift the latest draconian restrictions on December 2 when the country will return to the coronavirus tier system. However, furious backbench Tory MPs have called the latest measures “evil” and warned they will “ruin lives”. Sir Charles Walker,  Conservative MP for Broxbourne, said he would not be supporting the government’s legislation and added: “As we drift...

TfL secures £1.8bn rescue deal

Sadiq Khan and Boris Johnson have struck a rescue deal worth up to £1.8bn for Transport for London to keep bus and Tube services in the capital running for another six months. The agreement, announced early on Sunday just hours ahead of a crucial deadline will prevent the collapse of TfL until the end of the financial year. But discussions will continue on a new funding package for the following year, with lockdown restrictions expected to play further havoc on the group’s main income stream. Mr Khan, the Labour mayor of London, has been locked in an acrimonious dispute with transport secretary Grant Shapps over the bailout in recent weeks. Mr Shapps had threatened to take direct control of TfL unless Mr Khan accepted a package of unpopular measures, including sig...

Car industry calls to avoid devastating no-deal Brexit

Britain's car industry had its worst September in 25 years, with a decline in the number of vehicles being exported to Europe and the US. Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said 114,732 were produced during the month - 5% down when compared to September last year. Car production for the year is down 35.9% and is expected to fall below one million vehicles for the first time since 1999. SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: These figures are yet more grim reading for UK automotive as coronavirus continues to wreak havoc both at home and in key overseas markets. Domestic demand, which accounted for 27,199 vehicles, was 14.5% higher than a year earlier but most of the cars made in Britain are exported. The number of cars sent to the EU was do...

Sunak to set out spending plans

Chancellor Rishi Sunak will set out the government's one-year spending plans next month as he seeks to tackle the economic crisis caused by coronavirus. The Treasury has announced a 2021-22 Spending Review will be published on 25 November, as the government prioritises its response to COVID-19 and strives to protect jobs. The government had previously confirmed it was scrapping a proposed multi-year spending review after those plans were thrown off course by the coronavirus crisis. Mr Sunak said: In the current environment it's essential that we provide certainty. So we'll be doing that for departments and all of the nations of the UK by setting budgets for next year, with a total focus on tackling COVID and delivering our 'Plan for Jobs'. Long-term investment in ...

UK death toll surpasses 61,000

Boris Johnson is under pressure from scores of Conservative MPs to detail a “road-map out of lockdown” as more people in England come under the toughest coronavirus restrictions. The Prime Minister has been warned by a group of 50 Tory backbenchers representing northern constituencies that the pandemic is threatening his election pledge to “level-up” the country. Meanwhile, Covid-19 is spreading across London with more than 13,000 cases in a week , according to official figures. They also show that six of the ten boroughs with the highest coronavirus rates are now in west London. It comes as a study revealed a decline in protective antibodies among the general population since mid-July. Research by Imperial College London estimated just 4.4 per cent of adults had s...
