Muslim campaigner abused for backing Tories

A Muslim Conservative campaigner was subjected to a tirade of abuse when he was out doorstepping in east London. Has Ahmed was walking past Goodmayes station with a Tory rosette pinned to his chest when a member of the public started shouting insults at him on Sunday. Speaking to the Standard, the 23-year-old, who stood as an MP candidate for Ilford South in 2018, said despite his calm exterior he felt threatened and took out his phone to record the incident. Mr Ahmed said the man identified him as Muslim and then began to shout at him, at which point he started recording. At the time I carried on walking and tried to ignore him, Mr Ahmed said. "There were kids and people driving by, everyone was looking. Anyone would feel humiliated, it was a disgraceful thing h...

Uber loses its licence: Some alternatives

Cast your mind back to 2011. In order to get around London you might have hailed a black cab or booked one over the phone using a service like Addison Lee. Then Uber arrived and completely changed the game, allowing you to book a car almost instantly using its app. Whilst there are 3.5 million Uber users in London, the tech company's reign as London's top transport app is waning. Transport for London (TfL) has denied the company a new permit to operate in the city following concerns about its ability to identify its drivers. This doesn't mean you won't be able to hail a car from the app in the capital, however, as Uber can appeal the decision and continue to operate. But, if you do feel uneasy about riding in an unlicensed vehicle then luckily there are a wealth o...

Investment in offices slows as demand outpaces supply

Investment in London’s office market is falling despite growing demand from British and overseas investors, as a lack of available stock continues to hamper the sector. Total turnover for office investments in the capital in 2019 is set to drop well below the figure for the previous year, according to new data from Knight Frank, but a supply shortage may be masking increasing interest from investors. “We’re not really convinced that the turnover figures are reflective of the true underlying demand,” said Knight Frank’s Faisal Durrani. There was £2.9bn of office real estate available on the market during the third quarter of 2019 spread across 81 assets – a 21 per cent decrease on the second quarter. Durrani said the drop reflects “the severity of the shortage of i...

Children among rescued migrants

Children are among 13 migrants rescued from a boat in the English Channel. The vessel was spotted attempting to cross shortly after 9.30am on Sunday. HM Coastguard and Border Force were deployed and met the boat near Folkestone and 13 individuals, including several children, were brought ashore. They were being transferred to a specialist unit for people wishing to claim asylum. The past year has seen a dramatic increase in attempted crossings by dinghies in the English Channel, prompting increased security along the French coast and efforts to return migrants to France. Smugglers have also used lorry trailers, including one where 39 Vietnamese people were found dead in Essex in October. On Wednesday, 16 people were found in a sealed trailer on a ferry sailing fr...

Twitter hails brave Muslim woman on Tube

A Muslim woman has been hailed as "incredibly brave" after she confronted a man over his antisemitic rant at a Jewish father and son on the Tube. British Transport Police are investigating the incident which happened on the Northern Line in north London at around noon on Friday. Footage posted online showed a man reading a Bible passage with a quote about "the synagogue of Satan" as he leaned towards the little boy, before accusing Jews of being "imposters" who started the slave trade. I will adopt neutral Brexit stance

Jeremy Corbyn says he will adopt a neutral Brexit stance if Labour wins the general election and a second referendum takes place. The Labour leader made the admission as he took audience questions during a BBC Question Time special on on Friday evening. It comes despite Labour's official Brexit position being to negotiate a new deal that would then be put to the British people in a referendum. The party would then decide whether to campaign for or against their own deal at a special conference. An audience member asked: Will you campaign to remain or leave the EU if elected. Why would anyone vote Labour without knowing the answer to that question? Mr Corbyn replied: One, we will negotiate a credible Leave deal with the European Union, at which point the audience ...

Tesla bulletproof glass fails in demo

Nine years after outlining his plan for a Tesla super truck with crazy torque, dynamic air suspension that corners like it's on rails, Elon Musk has revealed the Cybertruck. But while the vehicle may live up to the hype, the unveiling didn’t go quite to plan. Described as an armoured personal carrier from the future, Mr Musk decided to demonstrate the electric truck's toughness during the launch event in California. First he encouraged people to use sledgehammers to strike the ultra-strong door panels, which are made of the same alloys found on spacecraft. There was barely a dent. A video demonstration then showed the lack of damage caused by bullets. It is literally bulletproof to a 9mm handgun, he said. That's how strong the skin is. Finally, it was time to show...
