What would happen if Trump went to war with North Korea

Now that we possess mighty nuclear power to protect ourselves from US nuclear threat, we will respond without the slightest hesitation to full-out war with full-out war and to nuclear war with our style of nuclear strike, and we will emerge victor in the final battle with the US. That is just one of the latest statements from North Korea’s interior ministry as tensions continue to rise over its continued missile tests and nuclear weapons programme. while today the ruling Workers party newspaper said the country's forces were combat-read to sink a US nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a single strike. The editorial further likened USS Carl Vinson to a gross animal. From sending new inter-continental ballistic missiles rolling through Pyongyang in a huge parade to threate...

Macron’s French bistro party lands him in the soup

Pro-EU centrist Emmanuel Macron came under fire Monday over a glitzy party in a high-end Paris bistro and his triumphant speech following his success in the first round of France’s presidential polls. Even close allies appeared to caution the inexperienced 39-year-old against complacency ahead of the second round run-off on May 7 against far-right leader Marine Le Pen. ‘We need to be humble. The election hasn’t been won and we need to bring people together to win,’ Richard Ferrand, secretary general of Macron’s ‘En Marche’ (‘On the Move’) movement, told BFM television on Monday. After results emerged on Sunday evening, Macron addressed thousands of euphoric supporters at an election party in southern Paris and brought his wife Brigitte on stage to share in the applause. ‘I...

Won’t let your citizens access the internet? Fine, no more IP addresses for you

One of the world's five internet registries is considering a proposal that will penalise any country that prevents its citizens from having access to the internet by banning them from receiving any new IP addresses. Every time your device tries to access the internet, it is assigned an IP address. There are five regional internet registries in the world that are tasked with managing and allocating IP address blocks across all the countries in their region. Together, they form an essential part of the backbone of the internet, working together with ICANN, which manages IP addresses and the internet's Domain Name System (DNS) to keep the internet stable. The African Network Information Center (AFRINIC) is in charge of allocating IP addresses across the African continent, and...

Jeremy Corbyn promises four new UK bank holidays if Labour wins election

The UK will get four new bank holidays if Labour wins power, leader Jeremy Corbyn has promised. They will fall on the patron saint's day of each of the home nations and apply to the whole of the UK. The Labour leader said the move would bring together England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, while giving workers a well-deserved break. The four nations that make up our great country have rarely been more divided due to the damaging and divisive policies of this Conservative Government, Mr Corbyn said. But where Theresa May divides, Labour will unite our four nations. A Labour government will make St George's Day England's national day and Shakespeare's birthday a public holiday, along with St David's Day, St Andrew's Day and St Patrick's Day. And we will ask for the s...

France votes in election nailbiter

France goes to the polls under heavy security Sunday for the first round of the most unpredictable presidential election in decades, with the outcome seen as vital for the future of the beleaguered European Union. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron are the frontrunners to progress to a run-off on May 7 but the result is too close to call in a deeply divided country. Le Pen, the 48-year-old leader of the National Front (FN), hopes to capitalise on security jitters that were catapulted to the fore of the campaign after the fatal shooting of a policeman on Paris’s Champs Elysees avenue claimed by the Islamic State group. Aiming to ride a wave of populism that led Donald Trump to the White House and Britain to vote for Brexit, Le Pen also wants to pull...

Silent protest over 20 deaths in Venezuela

Venezuelan opposition activists march in a quiet show of condemnation of the government of President NIcolas Maduro, in the border state of Tachira-San Cristobal, on 22 April, 2017. Photo: AFP Caracas, Venezuela: Dressed in white, Venezuelan protesters opposed to President Nicolas Maduro marched in silence in several cities on Saturday to pay respects to 20 people killed in three weeks of unrest. Unlike demonstrations in recent days, the rallies in Caracas, Maracaibo, Barquisimeto and San Cristobal passed with no major violence reported between protesters and police. A few minor scuffles briefly broke out in the east of the capital when police forced back the crowd with tear gas. A female journalist said she was assaulted by pro-government heavies downtown and a male journ...

UN says nuclear deterrence will not work in damning report on world’s most dangerous weapons

There will be catastrophic consequences when luck runs out on nuclear deterrence, the United Nations (UN) has warned in a major report which highlights the massive risk of an accidental or deliberate use of the world’s most deadly weapons. The poor relations between nuclear powers has contributed to an atmosphere that lends itself to the onset of crisis, said the report by the UN Institute for Disarmament Research. The rise in cyber warfare and hacking has left the technical vulnerabilities of nuclear weapons systems exposed to risk from states and terrorist groups, it added. Nuclear deterrence works up until the time it will prove not to work, it said. The risk is inherent and, when luck runs out, the results will be catastrophic. The more arms produced, particul...

Is France safe to visit

Britons in Paris should remain vigilant and follow the advice of local security authorities. That's the latest advice from the Foreign Office (FCO) following a shooting in the heart of the city, on the Champs Elysees, in which a police officer was killed and two more injured. The attack is the first in the country since a man drove a lorry through Bastille Days crowds in Nice last year, killing 86 people and injuring hundreds more. It was the third major attack in France in 18 months, with the other two, the November attacks and the Charlie Hebdo shootings, taking place in the capital, Paris. What happened in Paris? A suspected terrorist opened fire on a police car parked on the historic Parisian road that links the Arc de Triomphe and the Place de la Concorde. The gunman ...

Conjoined Twins Refuse to Be Separated Despite Doctor’s Warnings

When Carmen and Lupita Andrade were born, doctors said they only had three days to live. The conjoined twins, now 16, originally born in Mexico and now living in New Milford, Connecticut, defied those odds and lived far past doctors expectations. Health problems have emerged and placed the girls' futures at risk, but they tell the Hartford Courant they don't see the point in a surgery that could end up killing them. There's the whole psychological situation, Carmen says. Because we've been so used to, like, being together. I don't think there'd be, like, a point. The girls were brought to the U.S. by their parents, who sought medical expertise for their daughters condition. Each of the girls has a heart, a set of arms, a set of lungs and a stomach. Courant But, they share ...
