Trump mulls plan to place nukes in South Korea or kill Kim Jong un

The U.S. National Security Council presented President Trump with options to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un or place U.S. nukes in South Korea as retaliation to North Korea’s continued nuclear weapons. Killing Kim Jong-un or placing American nukes in South Korea are two options presented to President Trump as possible retaliations to North Korea’s continued nuclear weapons program, according to reports Friday. Both scenarios were laid out for Trump by his National Security Council ahead of his meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping this week, NBC News reported. The Trump administration has been hoping to convince China to step up pressure on the reclusive North Korea government to curtail its nuclear program. We have 20 years of diplomacy and sanctions under our b...

Judge rules paedophile hunters can continue posing as children online

Self-described paedophile hunters have welcomed a court ruling that will allow them to continue to pose as children online to catch sexual predators. Legal teams acting for two men who were caught by the organisation Dark Justice allegedly attempting to sexually abuse minors had argued that the use of evidence gathered by such operations diminished the integrity of the court process and that the groups should be regulated. But in a detailed judgment given at Newcastle crown court on Thursday, Mr Justice Langstaff ruled that there was no legal requirement for the activities of Dark Justice to be subject to controls. Cases relying on evidence gathered by such groups had been put on hold until the outcome of the test case was known. Dark Justice  two men in their 20s who keep...

Weren’t Syria’s Chemical Weapons Destroyed It’s Complicated

When the Syrian government carried out a gruesome chemical attack on civilians this week, many people had a question: Didn’t the Obama administration, working with Russia and international experts, destroy Syria’s chemical weapons stocks in 2014? In his State of the Union address that year, President Barack Obama declared, American diplomacy, backed by the threat of force, is why Syria’s chemical weapons are being eliminated. Months later, in July, on NBC’s Meet the Press, Secretary of State John Kerry essentially declared the mission accomplished: We struck a deal where we got 100 percent of the chemical weapons out. But, as became obvious when a Syrian attack on Tuesday killed more than 80 people, the truth was more complicated. Here is a primer on the history of Syria’s...

Sweden truck attack suspect is 39-year-old from Uzbekistan who posted jihadist propaganda

Policemen are seen guarding an area after several people were killed and injured after a truck crashed into a department store Ahlens, in central Stockholm, Sweden, April 7, 2017. A suspected terrorist targeted young children deliberately as he drove a hijacked lorry into a crowded shopping street in Stockholm, witnesses claimed last night. Infants’ buggies were sent flying through the air, one Swedish broadcaster reported, as the vehicle zigzagged along the pedestrianised Queen Street shopping district and embedded itself in the window of a department store. It swerved from side to side. It didn’t look out of control, it was trying to hit people, a second witness, Glen Foran, an Australian tourist, told Reuters. It hit people, it was terrible. It hit a pram with a kid in ...

Is North Korea next after US Syria strikes

The US strike in Syria could have repercussions far beyond the Middle East. By authorising military action, Donald Trump is differentiating himself from his predecessor - showing that he is prepared to act, that crossing a red line will have consequences - and that is a message designed to be heard by the leaders of China and North Korea as well. The timing could not underline the President's point more powerfully - hosting Xi Jinping for dinner at the time as he was, ahead of their first serious meeting on Friday, at which Kim Jong-Un's nuclear programme is expected to top the agenda. Now Mr Trump doesn't need to just tell the Chinese president he is serious - he can point to the satellite imagery. But Syria is not North Korea. Ordering what looks like a limited strike on...

Russia condemns US strike on Syrian air base as act of aggression

The Kremlin has condemned US Tomahawk strikes on a Syrian air base as an act of aggression and a violation of international law. Russian state news agencies on Friday said President Vladimir Putin regarded the military action against the base the US believes launched a deadly gas attack as an aggression against a sovereign state . . . under a far-fetched pretext. Earlier this week, Russia hit out at Washington after it accused Bashar al-Assad’s regime of perpetrating Tuesday’s chemical attack on civilians. Moscow insists the Syrian air force had hit a depot of chemical weapons produced by rebels fighting against government forces a claim rejected by the US. Dmitry Peskov, Mr Putin’s press secretary, said the Russian president viewed Washington’s action as an attempt to div...

Unmasked: the woman who kept sex slave in home with husband

This is the face of the woman behind one of Northern Ireland's most shocking sex abuse cases. Caroline Baker was unmasked yesterday after a legal challenge by media organisations in Ireland and the UK. Earlier this week the 54-year-old was handed a three-year sentence for her part in subjecting a disabled woman to horrific sexual assaults. Baker and her husband Keith abused their victim, who had severe learning difficulties, keeping her prisoner in a filthy room for years. Until yesterday a court order banned the media from publishing Caroline Baker's face. But reporting restrictions were lifted after a joint challenge by the Belfast Telegraph, the BBC, UTV and the Sunday World. Olivia O'Kane from Carson McDowell solicitors, who led the challenge, welcomed the ruling. The ...

People injured after van drives into crowd in Swedish capital

A van drove into a crowd of people outside a busy department store in central Stockholm on Friday, causing injuries, police said. Police received a call from SOS Alarm that a person in a vehicle has injured other people on Drottninggatan, police wrote on Twitter. The incident occurred just before 1300 GMT at the corner of the Ahlens department store and Drottninggatan, the city’s biggest pedestrian street, above-ground from Stockholm’s central subway station. Thick smoke was rising from the scene, while video images showed an area blocked off by police and crowds gathering around the police cordon. Helicopters could be heard hovering in the sky over central Stockholm, and a large number of police cars and ambulances were dispatched to the scene, witnesses said. While it wa...

Norway to build world’s first ship tunnel at sea

The Stad Ship Tunnel will be the world's first sea tunnel to pass through a mountain Norway on Wednesday unveiled plans to build the world's first sea tunnel to pass through a mountain, avoiding dangerous waters that intimidated even the Vikings. Built to bypass the Stad peninsula, a storm-swept area in western Norway, the Stad ship tunnel will be 1.7 kilometres (one mile) long and 36 meters wide, making journeys safer. The Stad tunnel for boats will finally be built, said Norwegian Transport Minister Ketil Solvik-Olsen, presenting a comprehensive transport plan for the period 2018-2029. The government is now ensuring a safer and more reliable passage of the most dangerous and harsh waters for the transport of goods along the Norwegian coasts, he said in a statement. The N...
