May’s govt to worry about than the fate of 28,000 Gibraltarians

Theresa May's government appears to have more important things to worry about than the fate of 28,000 Gibraltarians, according to Spanish sources who warned Gibraltar will crash out of the Single Market without the cushion of a Brexit deal transition deal. After Mrs May triggered the Brexit negotiations in March, the EU blindsided the British government by insisting that any deal could only apply to Gibraltar if Spain agreed. The EU-27 negotiating mandate effectively takes Madrid's side in the centuries-old territorial dispute over the rock. Senior Spanish government sources today told The Guardian that the British government had made no proposals at all to it regarding the future of Gibraltar. In a thinly veiled swipe at Mrs May’s struggles since she lost the Conservative...

Moped gang in prison who broke 17 mobile phone stores and caused £1m of damage

A moped gang who broke into 17 mobile phone stores and caused £1m of damage is facing time in prison. The gang of 10, aged between 19 and 24, used hammers, knives, angle grinders and a battering ram to break into Three mobile stores across east and north London, stealing phones and tablets from the stock room. On Thursday, four men were found guilty of conspiracy to commit burglary at Blackfriars crown court for offences between May and November 2016. Two other gang members were found guilty of the same offence at a previous trial, and four others pleaded guilty to their part in the burglaries in August. In three separate raids, gang members, who wore crash helmets and dark clothing during the burglaries, threatened and attacked security staff. During one robbery, a witnes...

Theresa May warn EU leaders to be wary of hostile states like Russia

PM Theresa May is to warn EU leaders to be wary of hostile states like Russia and pledge the UK will stay committed to European security after Brexit. In Brussels for a summit, she will say it is crucial that European countries work together to protect our shared values and ideals. She will also discuss Brexit with European Council President Donald Tusk. Last week Mr Tusk said the UK must show more progress on the divorce bill if trade talks were to begin this year. On Friday, Mrs May is expected to stress the need for a unified approach to security as the UK leaves the EU. She will say: From agriculture in Ukraine to the tech sector in Belarus there is a huge amount of potential in the Eastern neighbourhood that we should nurture and develop. But we must also be open-eyed...

Trump’s comments US troops only winning the result of his military strategy

Donald Trump’s comments that US troops were only now winning as a result of his military strategy, were somewhat insulting, a retired general has said. During an address to US forces serving overseas, Mr Trump said US troops were defeating Isis because of changes he had made to the strategy of his predecessor, Barack Obama. Everybody’s talking about the progress you’ve made in the last few months since I opened it up, he said. They weren’t letting you win before; they were letting you break even. They weren’t letting you win. He also talked about the soaring stock market, record jobs figures and the recent Republican tax. But retired Lt Gen Mark Hertling said Mr Trump’s comments would not have rung very well with him had he still been serving. First of all, I’m thankful fo...

Bounty offered for head of Bollywood actress

The release of a Bollywood film has been put on hold after a $1.5m (£1.1m) bounty was offered to anyone who beheads lead actress Deepika Padukone and the film’s director. Suraj Pal Amu, a member of India's Hindu nationalist ruling party, made the call against the actress, who previously starred alongside Vin Diesel in the xXx franchise, ahead of her latest project Padmavati over its alleged portrayal of a relationship between a Hindu queen and a Muslim conqueror. According to local media reports, the party member, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Haryana, declared that the film would not be allowed to release at all after it was scheduled to open to audiences on 1 December. It has already been banned outright in two states. There are now growing sec...

Jeremy Corbyn: budget shows Tories are unfit for office

Jeremy Corbyn has lambasted the budget, saying it completely fails to deal with a national crisis of stagnation and falling wages, and telling Philip Hammond it epitomised the woes of a government no longer fit for office. In a 25-minute response to the budget the Labour leader largely avoided direct comment on the chancellor’s announcement and instead focused on wider themes about the effects of austerity on public services, and people’s struggles with flat wages and benefit cuts. The test of a budget is how it affects the reality of people’s lives all around this country, Corbyn began. And I believe as the days go ahead, and this budget unravels, the reality will be a lot of people will be no better off. And the misery that many are in will be continuing. With pay lower ...

70 people rescued from floods after heavy rain and snow hit Britain

Scores of people have been rescued from flooding as heavy rain caused widespread disruption across north west England and North Wales, with large parts of Scotland also braced for snow. More than 70 people were evacuated from their flood-hit homes in north Lancashire early on Thursday. Lancashire Constabulary said emergency services, the Environment Agency and Lancaster City Council had received more than 500 flood-related calls and attended more than 100 incidents. People were urged not to call emergency services unless there was a threat to life as crews continued to respond to a backlog of incidents. The Met Office said around 1.7in (4.3cm) of rain had fallen in 24 hours in parts of Lancashire, while further north in Cumbria around half a month's rain, 3.5in (8.9cm), wa...

Putin puts Russia on war footing by telling businesses to be ready to switch to war production

Russian President Vladimir Putin has seemingly put his country on a war footing by telling businesses that they should be ready to switch production to military needs at any time. Putin's words come just the day after he said his nation should aim to overtake the West in terms of military technology. Putin was speaking at a conference of military leaders in Sochi on Wednesday (22 November) at a time when western leaders have become more suspicious of a militarily resurgent Russia. The ability of our economy to increase military production and services at a given time is one of the most important aspects of military security, Putin said according to The Independent. To this end, all strategic, and simply large-scale enterprise should be ready, regardless of ownership. Altho...
