Most wanted fraustar on run in Britain

Britain's most wanted fraudster Mark Acklom is on the run with another top fugitive, Sky News has discovered. Conman Acklom, 44, wanted in the UK for a romance scam, was photographed with a mystery companion at a cafe in Geneva, Switzerland, in May. A source told us the man was Jose Manuel Costas Estevez, a building contractor who fled Spain after a fraud conviction. We passed the information to Spanish detectives and they have now confirmed the man is Estevez, 50, who they have been hunting for more than a year. He faces six years in jail for ripping off government departments in Vigo, northwest Spain, by submitting false invoices up to €11m (£9.9m). Former Metropolitan Police border control officer Chris Hobbs said the absence of border controls in most of Europe was all...

Alan Woods was one of the four Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) Commissioners who took control of Tower Hamlets council between December 2014 and March this year. Everything we know about the iPhone X coming today

A fake dummy unit out of China depicts what the iPhone X may look like based on reports. Apple will launch at least three new iPhones today, September 12, at its new campus in Cupertino, California. There has been much speculation about these upcoming iPhones. All signs point to Apple announcing the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus alongside a completely redesigned and more expensive iPhone X. The pressure is on Apple, too. It's the 10th anniversary of the first iPhone, launched in 2007, and the company is expected to unveil some big updates to mark the occasion. Wall Street analysts hope that the new iPhone X, which could cost over $1,000, will drive a "supercycle" of sales and propel Apple to become the first trillion-dollar publicly traded company. Apple rarely comments on upcoming ...

The pound jumped on the news of inflation’s rise since Brexit

Inflation in August jumped to its joint-highest level since the vote to leave the European Union last year, as Brexit continues to push up the cost of living in the UK. The UK's Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rate — the key measure of inflation was 2.9% in August, up from 2.6% in the previous month, according to the Office for National Statistics. Inflation had been expected to climb to 2.8% from the 2.6% level seen in both June and July, according to economists polled before the release, but just exceeded those expectations. CPI measures the weighted average of prices of a basket of goods and services, such as food, transportation, and medical care. CPIH, a measure which includes costs associated with maintaining a home — and which the ONS cites as a more usef...

New £10 notes could earn you thousands of pounds

Shoppers are being urged to check their new £10 notes for serial numbers that could earn them thousands of pounds. The new notes are released on Thursday and estimates have been made as to which serial numbers collectors will be desperate to obtain. The Bank of England are hosting an auction on October 6, where there will be the opportunity to bid for a series of the special notes. The codes that will be available to bid for will be announced on Friday. They refused to comment on the prices that they are expecting to receive, but did point out that a similar auction for the new £5 notes proved very popular last year. A spokesman said: In total we received £194,500 from the auction last year, including a bid of £8,500 for a single £5 note. Every note is unique. Last year we...

Current Govt MPs have warned Theresa May over second Brexit bill

Senior Tories MPs warn May over Brexit bill after MPs vote for second reading. Conservative MPs have warned Theresa May that their support for her government’s Brexit legislation is not unconditional, as they demanded significant changes to the EU withdrawal bill within minutes of backing it. Parliament’s post-midnight vote resulted in the prime minister facing no rebellion from within her party, as the government secured a victory of 326 to 290. The result handed May an effective Brexit majority of 36 after seven Labour MPs Ronnie Campbell, Frank Field, Kate Hoey, Kelvin Hopkins, John Mann, Dennis Skinner and Graham Stringer – defied their own party whip to support the government, arguing that the referendum demanded the legislation be passed. Pro-European Union and anti...

Aircraft sent by Authorities to search and rescue operations in Florida

Authorities sent an aircraft carrier and other Navy ships to help with search and rescue operations in Florida on Monday as a flyover of the hurricane battered Keys yielded what the governor said were scenes of devastation. I just hope everyone survived, Gov. Rick Scott said. He said boats were cast ashore, water, sewers and electricity were knocked out, and I don't think I saw one trailer park where almost everything wasn't overturned. Authorities also struggled to clear the single highway connecting the string of islands to the mainland. The Keys felt Irma's full fury when the storm blew ashore as a Category 4 hurricane Sunday morning with 130 mph (209 kph) winds. How many people in the dangerously exposed, low-lying islands defied evacuation orders and stayed behind was...

Enforced removals of EU nationals during Brexit

The number of EU citizens the Government is deporting from the UK has rocketed since the Brexit vote, despite ministers promises to guarantee residents rights, The Independent can reveal. Analysis of official government data shows there were 26 per cent more enforced removals of EU nationals in the first three months of 2017 than in the same period last year. Almost 5,000 EU citizens have now been deported from Britain in the last 12 months: the highest since current records began and an increase of 14 per cent in the last year alone. The figures come after a leaked Home Office memo revealed comprehensive plans to significantly restrict immigration from Europe when Britain leaves the EU. Meanwhile, Tony Blair yesterday called for tough new rules to allow Britain to curb EU...

Why Aung Sang Suu Kyi’s Nobel Prize should be stripped

More than 400,000 people are calling for Aung Sang Suu Kyi to be stripped of her Nobel Peace Prize over her response to the Rohingya Muslim crisis. The leader of Burma’s National League for Democracy party was given the prestigious award in 1991 for campaigning for her country to hold full and free elections. But more than 405,000 people have now signed a petition on Change.org demanding the Nobel Committee withdraw the award from Ms Suu Kyi, who has been widely accused of failing to protect Burma's Rohingya population. Until this second, the de facto ruler of Myanmar [Burma] Aung San Suu Kyi has done virtually nothing to stop this crime against humanity in her country, the petition reads. The Norwegian Nobel committee has said they will not rescind the award, saying only ...
