The difference between panic attacks and anxiety attacks

Panic attack and anxiety attack are often used interchangeably but do they really mean the same thing? Here's how they differ, as well as symptoms and how to treat them. It happened as I was walking home from class during my second year of college. Seemingly out of nowhere, my heart started racing, I felt like I couldn't breathe, and I began sweating, even though it wasn't even hot outside. Terrified of what was happening in my body, I ran home I legitimately thought I was going to die. I had recently started seeing a therapist for depression and anxiety, so I called her as soon as I made it to my room. She knew exactly what was happening: I was having a panic attack. Over the years, I learned I wasn't alone - though some people referred to these episodes of extr...

New survey reveals worrying UK attitudes towards consent

Almost half of people in the UK don't think it's OK for a person to withdraw sexual consent if they're already naked with a partner, according to a survey released for Sexual Health Week 2018. Carried out by the Family Planning Association (FPA) in August, the survey asked 2,003 participants aged between 14 and 55 for their opinions on sexual consent. One of the biggest takeaways from the survey was that almost half of those polled (47 per cent) said that they don’t think it’s OK for someone to withdraw sexual consent if they’re already naked. Among those aged 14 and 17 years old, 39 per cent agreed with this view. The participants were asked whether it was OK to withdraw sexual consent in certain circumstances. The scenarios included if they'd been bought dinner...

New sex claims hit US top court pick

A second woman has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, throwing his ascension to the highest court in the land into further doubt. Deborah Ramirez has said that she attended a dorm-room party with Kavanaugh in the early 1980s when the pair were both studying at Yale University. There, she said in an interview with The New Yorker published Sunday, Kavanaugh exposed himself to her and thrust his penis into her face, causing her to touch it. I wasn’t going to touch a penis until I was married, Ramirez told the magazine. I was embarrassed and ashamed and humiliated. She added: Brett was laughing. I can still see his face, and his hips coming forward, like when you pull up your pants. Kavanaugh has denied the allegation but Senate Democ...

Brit loses appeal over illegal meds

Laura Plummer from Hull, who is currently held in an Egyptian jail after being accused of drug smuggling A British woman jailed in Egypt for taking hundreds of painkillers into the country has lost an appeal against her conviction, it has been reported. Laura Plummer, 34, was sentenced to three years in prison on Boxing Day last year after she was found to be carrying 290 Tramadol tablets in her suitcase. The shop worker had hoped Egypt's appeal court would accept she had no way of knowing the pills were illegal in the country, but judges in Cairo upheld her conviction and jail term, The Sun reported. Ms Plummer, from Hull, told the paper: I thought the appeal judges would see sense and realise I couldn't have known the tablets were banned. It's just so absurd. T...

Brexit deal still possible despite Chequers rejection

EU leaders have insisted a Brexit deal remains possible despite flatly rejecting the Chequers proposal put forward by Theresa May during an acrimonious summit in Salzburg. The prime minister endured a brutal reception from the national newspapers upon her return to London, with her treatment in the Austrian city widely seen as a humiliation. Amid the fallout, Mrs May used a surprise statement in Downing Street on Friday to issue an ultimatum to the bloc to accept her strategy or come up with counter proposals. She declared the UK would continue preparations for a no-deal Brexit, acknowledging that the two parties had reached an impasse over two big problems in negotiations. The address was commended by senior Conservatives and Brexiteer MPs, although the latter ha...

Why the northern Turkish coast of Cyprus perfect for family holidays

I’ve just been to Cyprus for the first time in 60 years. To my surprise no one recognised me or said: Welcome back, where have you been? My last trip there was in 1958 and I was 22 so now you know my age and I had just joined the Manchester Evening Chronicle. After two months, I was told I was going to Cyprus. I thought at first it was a suburb of Manchester. The I was told I would be flying there, the first time I had ever flown, which gave me a clue it must be abroad. I was to stay with troops of the Lancashire Fusiliers, who were fighting a war against Greek Cypriot terrorist group EOKA. When I told my girlfriend, she could not understand why I was pleased. I explained it was the first step to becoming a war reporter. Cyprus did get independence from Britain in...

Britain’s first unmanned trains spark safety row as worries raised about rowdy passengers

Britain’s first unmanned trains have sparked a safety row as politicians and union officials voiced concerns about football crowds on match days. The new Glasgow Subway trains were announced to much fanfare this week, designed to be driverless and completely unstaffed by 2021. As well as having no drivers, they will also have no door staff. While some lauded this as the future of transport, others worried that passenger safety was not being prioritised. Pat McIlvogue, a regional officer for the Unite union, said there were worries about overcrowding and rowdy passenger behaviour on match days. He told The Telegraph: Match days are a well-used situation and how they're going to manage the influx of traffic and people piling into doors when the doors are shut, what ...

Comcast outbids Fox in auction for Sky

Comcast said its bid came with a series of legally binding commitments on Sky ownership and UK investment Comcast has triumphed in the auction to buy Sky plc, the owner of Sky News, for £29.7bn in the biggest takeover ever seen in Europe's media industry. The US giant's victory follows a dramatic shoot-out with US entertainment giant 21st Century Fox in a rare three-round auction overseen by the Takeover Panel. The news ends 21 months of uncertainty for Sky over its ownership. Both companies want Sky to help them compete more effectively with the new wave of online entertainment providers, including streaming services provided by the likes of Netflix and Amazon Video, who sell their content directly to viewers. Comcast in particular wants Sky to give it a presence...

Danger to life amid over flying debris and heavy rain

Heavy rain and strong winds could put lives at risk today, with large parts of the country set to be battered by extreme weather, forecasters have warned. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning covering southern England, Wales, the Midlands, Yorkshire and North West England. It says there is a danger to life as a result of flying debris. The wind and rain are likely to cause chaos on roads and rail networks, and homes and businesses will be at risk of flooding. The warning is in place between 6am and midnight on Sunday, during which time up to 50mm of rain could fall in some areas. A Met Office statement said: During Sunday there is the potential for a developing weather system to track across southern UK, which is likely to bring a swathe of persistent and a...

Top US official denies plot to oust Trump

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein issued his second denial on Friday of a New York Times report stating that he proposed secretly taping conversations with President Trump and discussed the possibility of Trump administration officials invoking the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office. I never pursued or authorized recording the President and any suggestion that I have ever advocated for the removal of the President is absolutely false, he said in a statement. The New York Times's story is inaccurate and factually incorrect. I will not further comment on a story based on anonymous sources who are obviously biased against the Department and are advancing their own personal agenda, Rosenstein said in an initial statement earlier Friday. But let me b...
