Tower Hamlets Council working to end Food Poverty

The council hosted an Open Space event yesterday, Thursday 20 July, that saw Mayor John Biggs, community organisations, residents, stakeholders and council officers across social care, welfare, housing and public health share ideas, experiences and ways to address the issue of food poverty. Food poverty can be defined as the inability to obtain healthy, affordable food. Tower Hamlets is the one of the most deprived boroughs in London and 10th most deprived in England. Mayor John Biggs said: "We are committed to doing all we can to tackle issues like food poverty that's why later this year we will be launching a new £5m tackling poverty fund in Tower Hamlets. "Tackling poverty isn't something the council can do alone though and this event is a great way for residents and local organisations...

Desperate hospitals beg doctors to take on extra shifts at £95 an hour

Hospitals are so chronically understaffed they have been hiking pay rates in recent weeks and bombarding doctors with urgent emails and text messages in a bid to ensure standards of care do not suffer. On Tuesday, Peterborough City hospital raised the pay available for working overnight that night in its extremely busy A&E to £95 an hour for a 10-hour shift to try to attract recruits. Exceptionally, we approved a maximum hourly incentivised rate for our senior trust doctors. This will ensure safe medical staffing levels and enable the department to continue to give high quality care to all our patients, said Neil Doverty, the North West Anglia NHS foundation trust’s chief operating officer. Hospitals often scramble to make 11th hour arrangements to fill rotas. Last Mon...

If you drive a diesel car you could soon have to pay up to £20 a DAY

Drivers of diesel cars could soon be hit by a new fee of up to £20 a day, it is reported today. Plans for a so-called 'toxin tax' will be unveiled this week by Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom to crack down on air pollution, according to the Sunday Times. It reports around 35 towns and cities will have bans on diesel cars and commercial vehicles, daily charges on them entering the busiest areas, or a mixture of the two. Up to 10million cars could be affected in cities including Leeds, Southampton, Nottingham and Derby, it is reported. Councils in each area would consult on the details, and newer diesel cars would reportedly be excluded. London mayor Sadiq Khan has already announced the most polluting vehicles will have to pay a "toxicity charge" to enter the capital. I...

Discord in Angela Merkel’s government after environment ministry bans meat at official functions

Angela Merkel A row has broken out in Angela Merkel’s government after the environment minister banned meat at official functions. Barbara Hendricks claims eating meat is damaging to the environment and has ordered only vegetarian food to be served. A rival minister has accused her of nanny-statism and trying to force vegetarianism on people by the back door. With elections only months away and Mrs Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) lagging behind their junior coalition partner in the polls, it was only a matter of time before tempers started to fray. But no one expected the first falling-out to be over vegetarian vol-au-vents. Ms Hendricks is a member of the Social Democrats (SPD), who have surged ahead of Mrs Merkel’s CDU in the polls under their new leader, Martin Schul...

Could be killed if you drink 8 glasses of water every day

A new study says that drinking too much activates a protective swallowing inhibition in the brain. And can cause people to suffer from water intoxication. Apparently, drinking excess liquid, especially when we're not thirsty, could even kill us. It's a common piece of advice – drink six to eight glasses of water, or fluid, every day. The suggestion has been around for some time and appears on the NHS website. But while drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated is important, experts are warning that consuming too much might actually been damaging to our health. The danger is down to sodium levels in the blood. Too much water can lead to hyponatremia, which is when vital levels of sodium in your bloodstream become abnormally low. Hyponatremia can lead to lethargy, nausea, ...

Nigel Farage is fading away without a fight

A few minutes later, Survation’s poll was published – 35 per cent believed Ed Miliband had won, 31 per cent thought Nicola Sturgeon. The People’s Champion limped in third, on 25 per cent. He had bested Leanne Wood and Natalie Bennett. That was all. Suddenly, Nigel Farage is mortal. The magic is gone. The lustre is fading. The days when Ukip stood poised to sweep away the old political order seems – if not quite a distant memory – a loose and incomplete one. It’s difficult to put a finger on why. The polls show the party’s support averaging around the low teens. Its campaign coffers have just been boosted by £1 million donation from Richard Desmond . And it continues to strike fear into the heart of its political opponents. “Anyone in the Labour Party who tells you Ukip ...
