France issues warning to Johnson over Irish border

The French government has warned Boris Johnson against playing games with the Irish border after the new British prime minister demanded the ditching of the backstop. Amélie de Montchalin, France’s minister for European affairs, said both sides should avoid “games, gestures and provocations” with just three months to go before the UK is due to leave the EU. Speaking alongside her Irish counterpart, Helen McEntee, during a visit to the Irish border, De Montchalin said the French president, Emmanuel Macron, would hold talks with Johnson in France in the coming weeks. She said there was “solidarity” with Ireland and reiterated that the withdrawal agreement was “the best we have” and would not be renegotiated. De Montchalin said: “As you know, France has a simple appr...

Kate & Meghan are so close now that they ‘text regularly’

It’s been a long time in the making, but Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton reportedly text each other now that their relationship has grown closer. In fact, according to one royal reporter, the royal sisters-in-law “text regularly,” talking consistently enough that it would seem the women have grown genuinely fond of each other. Kinda tugs on your heartstrings, huh? For as much drama as has reportedly passed between the women since Meghan joined the royal family, it would appear they’re putting any tension behind them. Royal writer Carolyn Durand debunked lingering rumors of a rift between the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex, telling Hello! that the women bonded over motherhood (via The Sun). Kate was a great source of support to Meghan in the days le...

Dress worn by Boris girlfriend sells out in hours

Carrie Symonds is proving she has what it takes to be a fashion influencer, after a dress she wore to watch her partner Boris Johnson speak sold out within hours. On Wednesday, the former PR chief wore a pink and red floral midi dress by Ghost while making her first appearance as the girlfriend of the new prime minister of the UK. The 31-year-old paired the £120 dress with nude pumps and pink lipstick. Shortly after her appearance, the dress, which can be purchased in sizes XXS to XL on the Ghost website, was only available in limited sizes, before it sold out completely. According to Ghost, the dress “features a high neckline with back fastening and voluminous sleeves and seam detailing at the bodice for definition”. There’s also a slight flare to the skirt and ...

Lurking behind Boris in No 10, the ‘evil genius’ behind Brexit

Before taking on the role of ‘Brexit mastermind’ Dominic Cummings in a television drama, actor Benedict Cumberbatch decided to get to know his subject. The Hollywood star duly spent an evening last summer at the North London home of the political strategist and Vote Leave guru. After dining on a vegan pie, the pair sat up into the wee hours, chatting and drinking wine. A few months later, while publicising Channel 4’s Brexit: The Uncivil War, Cumberbatch was asked by an interviewer if anything about his encounter with the famously prickly 47-year-old Cummings had surprised him. To some, that may sound like faint praise. Yet such is the hostility that Dominic Cummings generates, that friends took the remark as a compliment. Yesterday, following the announ...

The reason you should always wash new clothes

If you’re the type who dons new digs without washing them first, there’s a chance you may pay a price for it a few days later. A red, itchy, painful price. Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune system-related reaction to an allergen that has come into contact with your skin. It causes a delayed reaction: a rash that appears a few days after exposure, and then can last for weeks. “When we see allergic contact dermatitis from clothing, it’s usually from disperse dyes,” says Dr. Susan Nedorost, a professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University and director of the dermatitis program at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Disperse dyes are primarily used in synthetic clothing materials like polyester and nylon, Nedorost says. And they may be pr...

Facebook slapped with $5bn fine for privacy violations

Facebook must adopt new protections for data users share on the social network and pay a record-breaking $5 billion fine as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. The social networking giant must expand its privacy protections across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and adopt a corporate system of checks and balances to remain compliant, according to the FTC order. Facebook must also maintain a data security program, which includes protections of information such as users' phone numbers. This settlement concludes a year-long FTC investigation, prompted by the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal. Facebook suspended the data analysis and political consulting firm in March 2018 for improper access to user data. That move came after The New York Times an...

Man jailed for planning driverless car terror attack

A man who planned to use a bomb carried by a remote controlled vehicle to carry out a terror attack has been jailed for 15 years. Farhad Salah, 24, was plotting to use the driverless car in an attack against an unknown target. He was convicted at Sheffield Crown Court earlier this month of preparing to commit acts of terrorism. Jurors heard that Salah posted on social media about using a driverless car in an attack. Counter-terror police said Salah was not close to achieving his aim of putting a device in a vehicle but officers believe he was a "very real risk to the safety of the public in the UK". The raids in Sheffield and Chesterfield happened in the aftermath of the Manchester Arena explosion, the terror attacks on Westminster and London Bridge, and at a time...

Signs of dehydration that aren’t thirst

In a perfect world, we’d all remember to drink the right amount of water every single day. But let’s face it: most people don’t include 'drink water' on their to-do lists. When you fail to drink enough to replenish the fluids lost through urination, sweating, and even breathing, you begin to enter a state of dehydration. And being dehydrated doesn’t just make you feel thirsty – it can also have a major impact on how your entire body functions. Learn more about what causes dehydration, as well as the dehydration symptoms you need to watch out for. How much water should you drink a day? You’ve probably heard the rule of thumb that you should drink eight glasses of water a day, but it turns out that the amount of water each person should drink varies. Children an...

Britain’s new PM Johnson prepares for no 10

Boris Johnson has been named the new Conservative Party leader - paving the way for him to become prime minister in a little over 24 hours' time. The former London mayor is now set to fulfil his long-held ambition of residing in 10 Downing Street, after beating rival Tory leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt. Mr Johnson said it was an "extraordinary honour and privilege" to be elected Tory leader and pledged to "energise the country" following the announcement. "The campaign is over and the work begins," he added. He also paid tribute to outgoing prime minister Theresa May, thanking her for her "extraordinary service to this party and this country". And Mr Johnson described his leadership opponent Mr Hunt as a "font of excellent ideas". Mrs May pledged her support t...

How to tell if your computer has been tampered with

Whether you're in an open office where colleagues regularly wander past, or live somewhere like a college dorm where you may feel comfortable leaving your laptop unattended in the presence of relative strangers, it can be all too easy for someone else to sneak a look at your computer. If you want to keep your device secure in communal environments, your best bet is to understand how to stop unauthorized access in the first place. Still, there’s some detective work you can do if you suspect someone else has been using your device. Since prevention is better than a cure, you ideally want to prevent others from accessing your laptop in the first place. A simple way to do that is to lock your laptop behind a password whenever you step away from it. On macOS, you can ge...
