World’s most sensual dance Kizomba ever (video)

Characterised by sensually swaying hips and couples clutching each other’s bodies, kizomba has been described as the sexiest dance in the world - and it is exploding in popularity outside of its native Angola. But some Angolans are worried that kizomba is wrongly earning a reputation as sexually suggestive, and have urged that it is in a fact a family-friendly dance. What is Kizomba? The word means ‘party’ in Kimbundu, one of Angola’s most widely spoken languages, and describes a type of music and dance. The music originated in the late 1970s as a combination of Caribbean zouk and Angolan semba music. As a dance, kizomba sees the traditional Angolan moves of semba performed to this genre of music, reports the International Business Times. Singer Eduardo Paim is considered to have po...

Facebook admits that social media may be bad for you

Scrolling through Facebook can leave people feeling worse afterward, the social network has admitted. David Ginsberg, Facebook's director of research, and Moira Burke, research scientist, made the surprising admission on Friday in a blogpost that highlighted the downsides of using the website. They detailed research from University of Michigan, which found that students randomly assigned to read Facebook for 10 minutes were in a worse mood at the end of the day than those who talked to friends or posted on the website. They also revealed how a study from UC San Diego and Yale found that people who clicked on about four times as many links as the average person, or who liked twice as many posts, reported worse mental health than average. Though the causes aren’t cl...

The unexpected benefit that retirement has on your sleep quality

You sleep better after you've retired, says new study We'd always assumed that sleep quality diminished as you got older, but it looks like that might not be the case after all... In fact, a new study has revealed that people sleep better and for longer after they reach retirement age. It seems as if giving up work leads to a reduction in sleep difficulties, researchers from the University of Turku in Finland have said. The team concluded this after analysing data from over 5,000 Finnish pensioners, who retired between the years 2000 and 2011. The volunteers answered a questionnaire about their sleep quality both before and after retirement, with surveys taking place every four years. And it seems that sleep quality improves after we give up work, and continues t...

Never make tea at work

Office teabags can carry as many as 17 times more germs than a toilet seat, scientists have discovered. A study carried out by the Initial Washroom Hygiene came across these staggering results by analysing the bacterial readings of kitchen utensils and appliances. The average bacterial reading of an office teabag was 3,785, in comparison to only 220 for a toilet seat. Other pieces of kitchen equipment also stacked up highly in their findings, with the bacterial readings averaging at 2,483 on kettle handles, 1,746 on the rim of a used mug and 1,592 on a fridge door handle. Many of us wouldn’t think to wash our hands after simply opening the fridge door or before making a brew… but perhaps we should. A poll of 1,000 workers revealed that 80 per cent of people worki...

Company to use spy drones to stop people working long hours

If you’ve ever worked at a firm with a pointless long-hours, bums-on-seats mentality, you may want to applaud this idea from Japan. A firm has unveiled a drone which hovers around buildings looking for workers doing overtime then hovers over them blasting them with music until they go home. The ‘T-Frend’ plays Auld Lang Syne, which is often used in Japan to announce that shops are closing. Norihiro Kato of creators Taisei says, You can’t really work when you think ‘it’s coming over any time now, and hear Auld Lang Syne along with the buzz. The drone patrols office floors on a pre-set path, looking for workers putting in extra hours then strikes. The firm hopes to sell the drone as a service, starting in April, with prices set at ¥500,000 (£3,295 a month), reports...

Why your body wakes you up five minutes before your alarm

You may have stumbled across the term 'circadian rhythm' before. It keeps you energised in the morning and drowsy in the evening, prompting sleep. It's essentially a 24 hour-internal clock controlled by a part of your hypothalamus in your brain, called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. It loves routine. If you go to bed and wake up at the same time every night, your body will become accustomed to that behaviour. Your sleep cycle is also regulated by certain proteins, the levels of which rise and fall throughout the day, affecting blood pressure and heart rate. They'll also affect your attention and cognitive ability - you'll get sleepier. If you follow a routine, your body learns to increase the levels of these proteins (PER) in time for your alarm. They'll start increasing an ...
