List of rogue landlords could help tenants vet their next home

Tenants could have access to a database of rogue landlords and letting agents, under a bill debated in the House of Lords on Friday. The Renters Rights Bill, introduced by Liberal Democrat Baroness Grender, proposes to ban letting agents fees and publish a public list of criminal landlords. It also proposes to ban rogue landlords from being able to own a house in multiple occupation (HMO), which is a property where more than two separate households share living space and facilities. Campaign group Generation Rent gathered in support of the Renters Rights Bill, which had its second House of Lords reading on Friday. Baroness Grender told The Debrief, an online magazine that has also been campaigning for renters’ rights, that the bill was intended to improve the quality of a...

Office Tells Female Customers To Shave Their Legs

Shoe brand Office has come under fire for a sexist online newsletter. The subject line of the email was "Show a little leg", while the tagline below read: "Just don't forget to shave them." A British woman called Katy, who goes by the online username AliceInWonderland3, took to Mumsnet to vent her frustrations. "Am I being unreasonable to not want a business who wants female customers telling them they need to shave their legs?" she wrote. "I shave my legs because I know people I encounter day-to-day will be horrified by body hair on a woman, but I don't need a business trying to make me feel bad if I choose to go outside without doing so. "Or trying to make me feel disgusted by something natural." Speaking to the Mail Online, the 24-year-old revealed that she thinks the e...

Can’t fall asleep? Try this super simple trick

Some things in life are necessary, like food, water, and shelter. But, to be reasonably content human beings, we need a few more things. Human contact is good, alone time is great, but at the top of the list? Decent sleep. Personally, I am about 1/8 the person I'd like to be when I'm going on four hours of tossing and turning. I'm 1/8 as smart, 1/8 as capable, and about 1/100 as friendly. Good sleep is absolutely mandatory. But, falling asleep is one of those Chinese finger-trap tasks that I'd never been able to master. I'd lie awake thinking about how not asleep I was, look at the clock, turn over, and repeat. The longer I stayed awake worrying about it, the harder it became to actually fall asleep. Until I discovered a new method. Keep in mind, I'm taking liberties with ...

Inside the secret bedrooms where cabin crew put their feet up and take a rest

We've all wondered what flight attendants do when they're not pacing the aisle serving us drinks and food. And these images of cabin crews' own secret bedrooms show they too get the chance to grab forty winks onboard. These images show crews onboard some certain Boeing 777 and 787 planes get their very own beds. Some of these jets feature a secret staircase which leads crew to their own sleeping quarters. But while they might offer a chance to rest your head, the set of windowless bedrooms in a row leave some attendants saying they feel like they're in a coffin. Used for long haul flights, the staircase leads crew members upwards into sleeping quarters fitted with mattresses, pillows and curtains offering a small amount of privacy. The beds are even fitted with seat belts ...

11 science backed ways for men to appear more attractive

Be honest, straight men: You all want to know what women want. Luckily, a bunch of scientists have wondered the same thing. These types of studies are often small, and frequently rely on self-reported feelings in a lab, which may be different from how women truly react in real life. And the participants are often Western college students, who are not an especially a diverse group. So take the results with a grain of salt. But hey, whatever helps, right? Here are 11 science-supported traits that women find irresistible. 1) Good looks can be a factor, but they're not as important as you may think. In studies, women typically choose better looking guys for short term flings, not long-term relationships. Sources: Evolutionary Psychology, Journal of Personality and Social Psych...

Statins glitch means thousands may have been incorrectly prescribed

Thousands of patients may have been wrongly put on statins, while others at high risk of heart attacks have been advised against the drugs in error, following a major NHS blunder. Medicines regulators have issued an alert to 2,500 GP practices, warning them that computer tools which assess patients’ risk of heart disease have been hit by glitches. The errors, in the system used by one in three practices, mean that patients with little risk of heart disease may have been needlessly prescribed the cholesterol-lowering drugs, while those in grave danger of heart attacks were not offered the medication. The Medicines and Healthcare Regulator Agency (MHRA) has launched an investigation into the failings affecting software which has been in use since 2009. Urging GPs not to use ...

Why Your Heart Occasionally Skips a Beat

Every so often, you might feel like your heart skips a beat. It’s called a palpitation, and the beat that follows can feel intense: Think a sharp pain, a quick pressure, or a racing sensation, says Michael Fenster, M.D., an affiliate faculty member at the University of Montana. For most men, it’s completely normal. But that weird feeling may stop you in your tracks, and if it persists, it may signal something serious. So for this American Heart Month, give the health of your heart the attention it deserves. Here’s everything you need to know about palpitations. What Causes a Heart Palpitation It might sound weird, but heart palpitations usually aren’t sparked by a heart problem. In fact, of people who actually went to the emergency room because of their palpitations, only ...
