Leaked figures reveal more patients coming to harm as NHS standards fall

Growing numbers of critically ill patients are coming to harm as a result of inadequate care provided by NHS staff, new figures reveal. The number of serious incidents involving what the NHS calls sub-optimal care of deteriorating patients is going up in hospitals, ambulance services and mental health settings. The trend has emerged in previously unpublished NHS England figures provided to former Liberal Democrat health minister Norman Lamb, who has branded them deeply disturbing. They also show that the number of patients in hospital in England who are suffering harm in serious incidents because of delays in their treatment has risen significantly over the last two years from 700 for some of 2015-16 (only part-year figures were available) to 1,027 in 2016-17, and ...

Meghan excited about Jonas and Priyanka’s engagement

A source revealed to E! News that the Duchess of Sussex has approved her good friend's relationship with the youngest Jonas brother. Jonas and the Quantico actress were first seen together shortly after Chopra flew across the pond to attend Markle's wedding to Prince Harry at Britain's Windsor Castle. The 36-year-old shared several photos from the royal wedding event but didn't seem to have attended the big day with a special date. Now that the newlyweds are officially Duke and Duchess, fans can't help but wonder if Markle will attend Chopra and Jonas' soon-to-be wedding. She's always been someone who's so just aware and interested in the world, she said. I met her three or four years ago and that's what we bonded on was how much we feel like we contribute to that...

Brexit: EU tears up MP’s customs plan

Michel Barnier has warned that attempts to appeal to EU leaders over his head were a waste of time, as he tore up Theresa May’s proposals on customs after Brexit, in effect killing off the Chequers plan. Against a backdrop of British cabinet ministers travelling across Europe to persuade governments of the benefits of the proposals, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator insisted that there was no difference in opinion to exploit. Anyone who wants to find a sliver of difference between my mandate and what the heads of government say they want, are wasting their time, quite frankly, he told reporters at a joint press conference with the new Brexit secretary, Dominic Raab, in Brussels. The British negotiators have become increasingly frustrated with the EU’s attitude to th...

Sadiq Khan says middle class cocaine use fuels London’s rising violence

Sadiq Khan says he has seen evidence linking cocaine consumption and rising violence Cocaine use at middle-class parties is helping to fuel drug-related gang violence on the streets of London, Sadiq Khan has warned. London’s mayor said recreational drug use was not a victimless crime and he had seen evidence from authorities of a clear link between cocaine consumption and rising violence in the capital. Khan called for action to be taken against people who buy the drug at middle-class parties, alongside a crackdown on gang members. There is a definite link, which has been shown to me by the police, of drugs and criminal gangs and knife crime and crime going up. He continued: We have got to make sure we take action among those young people who are involved in crimi...

May insists chief whip was not trying to steal votes as pairing row grows

Theresa May has insisted her chief whip was not trying to steal votes in knife-edge Brexit showdowns despite him apparently confessing to breaking Commons convention. Julian Smith has not denied ordering Tory MPs to ignore pairing arrangements designed to help sick or pregnant MPs to miss votes sparking calls for his resignation. Quizzed on the controversy in Belfast, the prime minister was asked why she had not sacked him for effectively trying to steal votes from the opposition. A Tory backbencher has said Mr Smith all-but admitted to her that he issued the order, which led to Brandon Lewis, the party chairman, voting when he was paired not to. But Ms May replied: There was an honest mistake made for which the chief whip and, indeed, Brandon Lewis have both apol...
