Police exchange gunfire with masked men in east London


 

 

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a shootout with police in Forest Gate, east London.

Officers were called to Lascelles Close at 22.45pm following reports of suspects seen in possession of firearms.

A number of shots were fired at the officers as they pursued them by car. Police fired back at the men on nearby Bective Road. No suspects or police were injured in the incident.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Armed Response Unit were pictured at the scene and images and video posted to social media show a large police presence as bystanders gathered to watch.

One witness wrote: Coming home after a long day at the hospital there’s been a shooting near my house, shots fired between police and mask men from what I was told.

Heard a crash sound, saw the police chase a car and then heard what sounded like gunshots. Now there’s a helicopter going around Forest Gate not sure what’s happening but it’s sounds serious.

Another said: Heard 5-6 gun shots followed by a huge police presence within 15 minutes of event.

A Met Police statement read: “Police were called at approximately 22:45hrs on Thursday, 26 July to Lascelles Close, E11 following reports of suspects seen in possession of a firearm. Officers, including firearms officers, attended.

A short time later a vehicle was seen nearby which failed to stop for police and a pursuit was authorised. During the pursuit, a number of shots were fired towards officers. Police firearms were discharged. There are no reported injuries.

“Three people have been arrested on Bective Road, E7 on suspicion of attempted murder. They have been taken to an east London police station where they remain in custody.

Officers and the National Police Air Service remain in the area. A crime scene is in place. The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed as is routine.
