Three dead as hurricane Ophelia force gales continue destructive path across UK

Monster Storm Ophelia is set to wreak more havoc as it continues its deadly path across the British Isles. Three people died when hurricane-force winds as high as 119mph battered Ireland on Monday, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and a path of chaos in its wake. Now Scotland is braced for fierce gusts, with flood warnings in place on the west coast. A yellow weather alert for wind has also been issued Northern Ireland, southern and central Scotland, the north of England and north west Wales. Ireland bore the brunt of Ophelia’s wrath as she claimed three lives on Monday. One man was killed in Ravensdale, Dundalk, when a car he was in was struck by a tree at around 2.45pm, Ireland’s Garda said. He was named in reports as Fintan Goss, 33, a father-of-two. In Cahir...

Girl Smashes Gender Stereotypes By Answering Sexist Homework Question

A girl answered a homework question in the best way, smashing gender stereotypes while she was at it. Yasmin’s answer to an assignment asking her to think of another word for a hospital lady, was shared on Twitter by her dad. The assignment involved answering the question with a word that includes the letters ur. So she wrote surgeon. Her dad explained both he and his wife are surgeons. However her teacher, who was marking the sheet with red pen, added or nurse. Back in June 2017, a mum decided to rewrite her daughter’s homework after being frustrated by the sexist message it was sending. The story was about a child being unhappy that her mum was going back to work. It referenced the working dad making a bad breakfast. Here’s the homework assignment my daughter brought hom...

Royal Mint withdraws the old pound coin: £450 million lost overnight

About £450 million has been lost overnight as old pound coins stopped being legal tender. As of midnight on Sunday, hundreds of millions of round coins were replaced with the new 12-sided design launched in March. Some stores, including Tesco, have promised to let people keep spending the old coin for a limited period, while banks and building societies also offered extra time to deposit. It has now been estimated around 400 to 450 million old round coins were still languishing unspent in members of the public's purses, piggy banks, and sofa nooks. People had been offloading their old coins at a rate of about 60 million a week in the lead up to Sunday night's deadline. Some major stores have said they will give shoppers an extra window of opportunity to spend them. Iceland...

Theresa May emergency flies to Brussels to rescue Brexit

Theresa May will travel to Brussels for talks with European Union leaders amid reports that she has personally urged Angela Merkel to end the Brexit stand-off. The meeting on Monday comes days after Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the EU Commission, and Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator said talks about Britain leaving the EU in March 2019 were deadlocked. Mrs May is taking Oliver Robbins, the civil servant leading the Brexit talks, with her for the dinner the first since a frosty meal in Downing Street in April. Mr Juncker was reported to have launched a scathing attack on Mrs May during the April dinner, saying that Brexit cannot be a success. Downing Street sources insisted Monday's meeting had "been in the diary for weeks" but the announcement caused surp...

A strong storm Ophelia turn the sun red in UK

Parts of England have experienced an unusual side effect from Storm Ophelia: a blood red sun. The former hurricane's powerful winds have pulled air and dust up from southern Europe and Africa - with the spectacular sight prompting "lots of calls" to the Met Office. Forecaster Grahame Madge explained: "It's all connected with Ophelia, on the eastern side of the low pressure system air is coming up in the southern direction. It's most likely the appearance of sunset at midday is caused by the particles scattering the light and giving the appearance of a red sun. Sharon Derrick was one of those admiring the dramatic skyline, saying: Bristol looks like the film The Red Planet... the weather is bizarre. The Bristol Nomad - a part-time photographer - also took pictures of the "v...

First commercial flight lands on remote British island

The first ever scheduled flight to British overseas territory St Helena has landed but was 45 minutes late. The UK taxpayer-funded development on the remote South Atlantic island welcomed its first 78 commercial airline passengers at just before 2pm on Saturday. The flight from South Africa landed 45 minutes behind schedule. The territories official Twitter account shared images of huge crowds gathered to welcome the flight and described it as “a big moment for all”. St Helena Airport, built with £285 million of funding from the Department for International Development (Dfid), was due to open last year but the launch of commercial flights was delayed because of dangerous wind conditions. Further trials were carried out in August and the airport was given the go-ahead to be...

Iran blamed for cyberattack on British Parliament

Iran was responsible for a cyberattack on Parliament that hit dozens of MPs, including Theresa May, Whitehall sources have told The Daily Telegraph. The unprecedented brute force cyber attack in June lasted more than 12 hours and compromised around 90 email accounts. It was initially thought that Russia was behind the attack, but intelligence officials have now concluded Iran is responsible. It would be Tehran's first significant cyberattack on the UK. In the attack, hackers repeatedly probed weak passwords of politicians and aides, forcing parliamentary officials to lock MPs out of their own email accounts as they scrambled to minimise the damage from the incident. The network affected is used by every MP including the Prime Minister and her cabinet ministers for dealing ...

UK rail worker reduced to tears by racist abuse after being called suicide bomber

A railway worker has told how he fell victim to racist abuse seven times in seven months including being branded a p**i and a suicide bomber. The man, named only as Sukhi, gave a heart wrenching account of the verbal attacks which he says have left him in tears and suffering harrowing flashbacks. The station assistant at Merseyside, in Liverpool, described how on Father’s Day he was forced to tell a man his dad was too drunk to travel. He went to describe how the banned passenger hurled racial slurs including stupid p**i and suicide bomber. In a heartbreaking video, released by British Transport Police, Sukhi admits he sometimes feels like rubbing the colour off his skin and says: If I was white this wouldn’t be happening to me. BTP said despite millions of passengers usin...

EU withdrawal bill debate delayed after 300 amendments demanded by MPs

The Government’s key piece of Brexit legislation has been delayed due to a major push from MPs to force changes to it. The EU withdrawal Bill will now not be debated next week after some 300 amendments were demanded by MPs, with many of them thought to enjoy enough support among Conservative MPs. If Theresa May were to suffer a defeat at the hands of Labour and Tory rebels on her critical piece of Brexit legislation it would once again call into question the credibility of her administration. It came after the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier warned of a disturbing deadlock in Brexit negotiations, with Ms May facing pressure to make further concessions to move talks on to future trade. Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom confirmed that the Government was not yet ready t...
